Chapter 43

Amonth later, we get married in the grass surrounded by the circular drive of Shady Lake right at sunset.

It’s really a gorgeous setting, with the lake in the background, and the trees.

Axe built us an arbor out of pieces of driftwood, and the florist wrapped it with swags of flowers.

It matches my heart— wild with abundant happiness.

But the pretty--and free--setting isn’t the main reason we get married there. Mack’s Nana has taken a sudden downturn, and we want to make sure she’s with us on our special day.

I wear a simple silk sheath with a trailing train.

Mack wears a navy suit with a pale pink shirt underneath.

He and I both cry when we say our vows. Of course he looks handsome and shining with love; I look like a blubbering fool.

It’s fine. I figure I’m getting the better end of this deal anyway, even though he swears he is.

Alex stands behind Mack, grinning the whole time. They’ve grown close, my brother and my new husband. Mack fills a gap that my father unintentionally left, even though neither Mack or Alex might admit that out loud.

As I sit at our table at the reception, I look over our guests.

It’s a weird group--half biker club, half old folks home residents.

But they all seem to be having a good time.

We decided just to do a barbecue out front.

I’m super happy with our decision--everyone laughs and mingles and enjoys the more casual atmosphere.

I think it’s funny, how the best and worst parts of your life can be mingled.

I met Mack in one of the lowest points of my life, but he’s lifted me to the highest heights.

I now have someone I can rely on, someone I can call.

Not to mention the hottest husband ever to grace the title.

He’s handsome, he’s kind, he’s protective, he’s rich…

I don’t know what Mack’s getting out of the deal except me. But it seems to be enough for him. The dummy doesn’t even want a prenup.

After our honeymoon in Tahiti, we move into our house on the hill above Shady Lake. It feels like ours now, now that we both had a hand in it.

And though there’s been times in my life where I truly started to believe that things just didn’t work out for me, Mack healed that part of me. I know now that great happiness can follow great sadness.

And even more than that, I know that the best of my life is ahead of me.
