Chapter 2 A Good Show

"What did you want me for?"

Xiao Zheng sat down in front of me, face exhausted, voice hoarse.

In only half a day he seemed to have aged several years.

Outside, the case had exploded. The little girl lay in the hospital between life and death. Her family had gone white-haired overnight. The thug, thanks to one piece of paper, walked free.

People's simple sense of right and wrong had taken a brutal hit. The crowd was furious. Plenty claimed they would storm our hospital.

I poured Xiao Zheng a cup of coffee. He didn't take it. He just stared blankly at the desk.

After a long moment, he said in a rough voice, "I let him get away... But I promised the kid I'd catch the bad guy... Brother keeps his word... We hooked our fingers on it."

As he spoke, his shoulders began to tremble.

Pain flooded the eyes of this hot-blooded young man.

I patted his shoulder and said with a smile, "You didn't let him go. You sent him where he belongs. Soon he'll understand that the rule of law is the greatest umbrella of human civilization."

He jerked his head up. "What do you mean?"

I pointed at the monitors. "There's a good show to watch."
