Chapter 8 Fall From the Stairs

"Still running?"

Brother paced over, stopped in front of Old Wang, planted the hammer, and looked him over with interest. "Go on. Run for me again?"

Old Wang lay sprawled on the ground like a heap of rotten meat.

Yellow and red liquid had soaked through his crotch.

His eyes rolled up. His breath was barely there.

Brother poked him with a stick and found he was almost like a dead bug.

He laughed and said, "Little sister, I've caught your mouse. Come play."

Then the violence drained out of his eyes.

"Wow, Brother is amazing! You found him right away!"

The moment Xiao Mei appeared, her face lit up with delight.

She raised the forty-kilogram hammer high. "Uncle, the game is starting. If you can't hide, you're going to die, you know!"

The threat of death seemed to wring one last burst out of Old Wang.

He pointed frantically behind Xiao Mei, stammering.

"What?" Xiao Mei looked confused.

"Some... someone!"

Xiao Mei fell for it and turned to look.

In that gap, Old Wang used the last of his strength and flipped himself down the stairs.

A thud, and he fell from the third floor onto a balcony of a room on the second.

"Brother!" Xiao Mei stamped her foot in fury. "He tricked me!"

The moment Brother appeared, he raised the hammer and chased downstairs.

Just then, an old voice rose in the stairwell:

"Young man, don't you go breaking the rules."

At that, Brother actually stopped.

He shrugged, his tone resigned. "Didn't think I'd wake you, you old thing."

An old face poked out from a room. His eyes went first to Brother's feet. When he saw Brother hadn't crossed the red paint line in the stairwell, his expression eased a lot.

"Your bones are extraordinary. You're a rare martial talent. Why not join my school soon, and we can achieve immortality together?"

Brother tossed out a single word—crazy—and turned to leave.

A lunatic calling a lunatic crazy.

It made sense, and somehow it still felt off.
