Chapter 40 A Promotion on the Horizon
"Sunny, what's wrong?" Clara Bennett asked, seeing her standing still in the kitchen for a long time, worried that she might have burned herself. She quickly got up and walked over to check.
To her surprise, Sunny Lin was laughing uncontrollably at the pot of soup and a basin of medicinal residue.
"This is..." Clara paused, realizing that the strange smell she had been noticing since morning was coming from these.
Sunny tried to hold back her laughter and looked at her meaningfully. "Don't get too excited when I tell you this."
"What's going on?"
"These are all Chinese herbs," Sunny said, picking up a few items to explain. "This is Evodia, this is Solomon's Seal, these are Deer Antler Glue, Donkey-Hide Gelatin, and Tortoise Shell Glue..."
"The rest are common ones you should recognize: Goji Berries, Mulberries, Lily Bulb, and Asparagus Root."
Clara looked puzzled. "What are these for? Why did Mason Reed make this soup for me?"
"These are for nourishing a woman's yin and kidneys!" Sunny burst into laughter. "Luckily, you haven't drunk it yet. If you had a bowl, I guarantee you'd be as fierce as a wolf tonight, and Mason wouldn't stand a chance!"
Clara froze for a moment, her face turning bright red.
"Hey, what's he thinking?" Sunny hooked her arm around Clara's neck. "You're on your period and can't serve him, but he's still hoping to get you excited tonight?"
"Sunny!" Clara glared at her, stopping her from continuing.
"Okay, okay, no more joking." Sunny helped her back to bed.
Regardless of Mason's intentions, the Ten-Treasure Nourishing Soup was definitely not to be consumed.
Sunny made her a bowl of brown sugar water.
"By the way, there's something important I need to tell you."
Clara was startled, seeing Sunny become serious, and felt a bit nervous. "What is it?"
"I passed by Mr. Thomas Sun's office this morning and overheard his conversation with Stacy Chen... It seemed to be about you."
Clara's expression changed.
Mr. Thomas Sun was Stacy's uncle and a major shareholder of the company. The day she had hit Stacy, she was sure Stacy would go complain to her uncle.
Now, staying at the company seemed impossible, but she hadn't sent out any resumes yet, and she still had a few deals to finish...
"Don't get too worked up," Sunny said, patting her hand. "Actually, what I heard was quite surprising. Stacy was badmouthing you the whole time, but Mr. Sun didn't respond. Instead, he praised your strong work ethic and seemed to be considering promoting you to sales team leader!"
"What did you say?" Clara widened her eyes, then felt puzzled.
As a small salesperson, she rarely interacted with high-level executives like Mr. Sun and didn't know much about his character.
But she often heard from senior colleagues that Mr. Sun was quite cultured, didn't put on airs, and was easy to get along with. He didn't always favor Stacy.
"Maybe Mr. Sun really values merit over nepotism?" Sunny looked at her. "Two senior members left the sales department, taking many clients with them. The company needs people right now... Clara, this might actually be an opportunity!"
Clara bit her lip, silent.
She remembered what Mason had taught her: if you're unsure about a situation or a person, try to consider it from their perspective.
"Sunny," Clara said softly, "if you were a major shareholder and your niece was hit by an employee, would you promote that employee without holding a grudge?"
"If that employee was very capable, would you see them as an ally or an enemy to your niece?"
