Chapter 39
“Are you going to keep going on and on about the maintenance guy?”
“You goddamn right because his ass always popping up and shit when I’m not around. Then I bring my ass back up here and y’all playing fucking Uno like some high school sweethearts and shit. Where you know the nigga from?”
“I don’t fucking know him. He was friendly when I first met him and he keeps me company. The nigga got a whole bitch but you in here fussing about him playing cards with me.”
“Summer, don’t make me fuck you up. You question me all the time. Now the pressure on you and you acting real guilty. I’m just asking where you know buddy from because he super friendly.”
“I don’t know him,” I told him with finality in my voice.
“Fuck it!” Law grabbed his shit and headed for the door.
“Where the hell are you going now? You just got here.”
“I’m going to ask that muthafucka where he knows you from, and then I’ll be back when I fucking cool off.”
I waved his ignorant ass off and got up to use the restroom. One thing I was not about to do was argue with him about Trey. If he was that damn bothered, then he needs to figure the shit out.
“Summer?” A woman I had never seen walked into my room.
“Who the fuck are you and why are you in here?”
She was tall, with a short pixie cut. She wore jeans and a sweater that hung off her shoulder. I got closer to the bed just in case I had to hit the nurse button. I’ll fight a bitch but not with this big stomach in the way.
“I know you don’t know me, but I wanted to come and talk to you about something.”
“What?”
“I had someone come and see me to get some work done. I’m usually not in the business of doing things for money. At first, she was extremely loving and talked about the love she had for a man but he wouldn’t love her back.”
“Girl what the fuck you talking about?”
“I’m breaking confidentiality but you’re pregnant and I’m concerned that I need to reverse the curse she put on you. Are you familiar with Pinkie? Pinkie Rose?”
“Yea, I know the bitch. Why?”
“She had some root work done. Your pregnancy has been hard because of her. You’ll deliver your baby early, but if you let me help and you believe in my work, she’ll be healthy.”
“Bitch what did you say?”
“Look, I’m not here to hurt you. I’m here to help because if you don’t let me, you could lose your life and your baby. There was a death root put on her.”
Pain started to consume my whole body. Gripping the side of the bed, I eased into the bed and she helped me. She opened her bag and pulled out a candle and some more shit. She cut off everything that made noise or distracted her.
“Where is your child’s father?”
“I don’t know.”
“I need to see him, too. If he comes back after I leave, tell him to please come and see me before the end of the week.”
“Why do you do such terrible things to people?”
“My work is not intended to hurt but only to heal or help. Even we sometimes misjudge someone’s character, but I am here to make it right with you.
I never knew you were pregnant until I was meditating and your name and face came into my vision.
She mentioned you and sickness but not pregnancy.
I need silence for at least fifteen minutes.
Could you call the nurse’s and tell them to give you a few moments without interruptions? ”
“Why should I trust you?”
“I’m in debt to make this right for the baby. I’ve been doing this since I was a young girl, and I’ve never killed anyone. I don’t use my magic that way.”
I picked up the phone and called the nurse’s station.
As she began to do her work, I made sure I kept my finger on the button for the nurse.
My baby started moving around in my stomach more than she had done in the last two weeks.
I thought it was because she was running out of room but now, I believed what this woman was saying, my baby was dying.
“She’s perfect. She will still come early, but she’ll be as healthy as a full-term baby.”
“What’s your name?”
“Anja.”
“Thank you for making it right.”
She bowed and kissed my hand. “Please have the father contact me. Blessings to you and your daughter.”
