When I arrive, Laura, Eagle, Danny, and Detective Bizzell are seated around the table. Laura pulls a chair out for me beside her. I am seated across from Danny. He doesn’t acknowledge me.
Laura goes into great detail about the theory Danny and Eagle have pieced together with Juliet in the role of murderer. I look at Danny. He is still not looking at me.
I smile at Detective Bizzell. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Dr. Cassidy. I must say, Danny has been your biggest advocate. If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have uncovered any of this.” Danny’s face is blank. No emotion. Not love. Not hate. Just blank.
“So, the next steps will be to take this to the prosecutor, right. Then he’ll drop the charges against me?”
“We have a working theory. We don’t have proof. We can’t take a theory to the prosecutor.”
“Would this theory convince a jury I’m innocent?” I look to Laura for the answer.
She shakes her head. “I’m sorry, but no...”
Danny speaks for the first time. I’d forgotten how much I love his voice. “We have strung together bits and pieces that are plausible, but we don’t think it outweighs the evidence against you.
“The jury will probably start with a presumption of guilt because of the extensive press this murder has received. We know we keep harping on the evidence, but there just isn’t any that points in any other direction than yours.”
“However,” Detective Bizzell interjects, “we have put a plan in motion that we hope will elicit a reaction from Juliet that will lead to a confession.”
I waited for more of an explanation. “That’s all we can tell you for now. Be patient.”
Danny left the conference room first and I made a hasty exit afterwards to catch him.
“Hey, Danny.” He paused and turned around. Still no emotion in his face. Just blank.
“Can we grab a cup of coffee and talk?”
