Chapter 46
The Page of Swords brings a fresh perspective to an old situation.
DANNY
When she walked into the conference room at Laura’s office, I avoided her gaze. Just seeing her and hearing her voice brought back the memories of our first night together.
Cal isn’t conventionally beautiful, but to me she is the most desirable woman I’ve ever met. Our chemistry was electric but one question I have for myself is why am I attracted to someone who is so emotionally volatile?
I posed that question to Steve the other day.
“This would be the forbidden woman with whom the relationship would be inappropriate?”
“One and the same.”
“Remember I said if you are feeling a strong attraction to someone, you need to ask ‘why’.”
“That’s what I’m asking you, Steve. Why am I attracted to someone who is so emotionally unstable?”
“I don’t think you are attracted to her because she is unstable. I believe you are attracted to her in spite of it. Let’s take a closer look. Can you tell me who she is?”
“Confidentially, it’s Caroline Cassidy.”
“Ahhh.” Steve goes silent for a moment.
“Have you read any of her books, Dan?”
“One. Love Hunger.”
“The latest book she wrote, The Shadow Knows, has a lot of her childhood history and background in it. It’s not pretty. What was her last outburst about?”
“When I told her that Charlotte and I were not yet divorced.”
“Ahhh.” I hate it when Steve does that.
“So, a woman you had several sexual encounters with, a woman who thought you were single, got upset when she found out you are still married. Is that right?”
I hate it when Steve does that.
