Chapter 11 Cracks Between the Twins
Joan sat at the small table in her studio apartment, the morning sun casting long shadows across the floorboards. Across from her, Lena was busy typing on her laptop. The quiet hum of the computer fan was the only sound breaking the silence.
They now had two key pieces of proof. Graham’s medical report established that he had been drugged with Joan’s stolen medication, while the digital access logs tied the fraudulent transfer to Annabelle’s assigned laptop.
"We have enough to clear your name regarding the money, Joan," Lena said, turning her screen so Joan could see the highlighted numbers. "Annabelle used the special access Reiner gave her. It shows she logged into the company network and sent the funds herself."
"It proves she made the transfer," Joan agreed, her voice steady. "But it doesn’t clear everything else. It doesn’t prove who put those pills in Graham’s drink at the hotel. And it doesn’t prove that Annabelle scanned my stolen discharge papers and forged the version she showed Reiner."
Joan crossed to the kitchen counter. Macey and Annabelle had always presented themselves as inseparable, sharing clothes, homes, secrets, and failed ventures. Beneath that unity, however, each measured what the other possessed. Their alliance had always contained its own fault line.
Macey wanted affection, attention, and romance. She wanted Reiner to look at her with desire. Annabelle, on the other hand, did not care about love. She cared about power, money, and control. She wanted Joan’s seat at the company board.
"They built this lie together," Joan said, turning back to Lena. "But they want two different things from Reiner. Macey wants a boyfriend. Annabelle wants his money. If we want them to confess to the rest of the plan, we need them to turn on each other."
Lena raised an eyebrow, looking intrigued. "How do you propose we do that?"
"Macey genuinely believes Reiner is in love with her," Joan explained.
"She thinks this three-person relationship is a romantic adventure.
But Annabelle just sees Reiner as a stepping stone.
If Macey realizes that Annabelle plans to push her out as soon as they get full control of the company, Macey will lose her mind. "
Joan picked up her phone. She opened an encrypted messaging app and typed a short, simple message to Macey's private number:
Annabelle is meeting with the legal team today to discuss taking over my official title permanently. She told the lawyers that Reiner only needs one strong executive partner, not a needy distraction. You might want to check her briefcase.
Joan hit send.
Joan disliked using the twins’ oldest rivalry against them, but she was not inventing a new wound. She was exposing the fracture already holding their alliance together.
"Is that true?" Lena asked, watching Joan set the phone down.
"Annabelle did ask the legal team about permanent title transfers yesterday," Lena noted, checking her notes. "So it’s close enough to the truth to make Macey extremely suspicious."
"Now we wait," Joan said.
Morning light poured through the penthouse windows. Macey sat on the velvet sofa in a silk robe, humming over a cup of coffee. Reiner had already left for his early meetings.
Annabelle walked out of the guest bedroom, dressed in a sharp gray designer suit. She carried a leather briefcase, her eyes glued to her tablet as she made phone calls.
"Good morning, sister," Macey said cheerfully, sitting up. "Are we going to the spa before meeting Reiner for lunch?"
"I don't have time for the spa, Macey," Annabelle said, not looking up from her screen. "I have three meetings with Loft International's investment committee today. I need to make sure the board feels confident in me before the press preview and soft launch."
Macey’s smile faded a little. She set her coffee cup down on the table. Just then, her phone buzzed in her hand. She looked down and read the text message from the unknown contact.
Macey’s eyes narrowed as she read the words: Annabelle told the lawyers that Reiner only needs one strong executive partner... You might want to check her briefcase.
Macey looked up at her twin sister. "Annabelle, what papers are you taking to the office today?"
"Just company budget reports and launch schedules," Annabelle replied smoothly, setting her briefcase down on the kitchen island to grab her car keys. "Why?"
"Are you filing anything about Joan’s permanent replacement?" Macey asked, her voice dropping lower.
Annabelle stopped. She turned to face Macey, her expression cool and unbothered. "We discussed this, Macey. Joan is on leave. Someone has to step into her role so the company value doesn't drop. I am handling the business side."
"And what am I handling?" Macey demanded, standing up from the sofa. Her silk robe fluttered as she walked over to the kitchen island. "You told me we were doing this together. You said Reiner was going to choose both of us. You said we were going to share this life."
"Reiner is choosing us," Annabelle said, her tone dripping with quiet annoyance. "He’s taking us to the Loft Haven launch as his partners. He’s already agreed to a trial relationship. What more do you want right now?"
"I want to make sure you aren't squeezing me out." Macey yelled. "You spend all day at Joan’s desk, wearing Joan’s power suits, talking to Reiner’s board members! You look at Reiner like he’s a bank account. I actually care about him."
Annabelle let out a cold, mocking laugh.
"Care about him? Macey, don’t be ridiculous.
Reiner Loft is an asset. He is a multibillionaire with a massive luxury empire.
Do you really think I did all this work—scanning Joan’s medical papers, forging the diagnosis, framing Graham, setting up the hotel room—just so you could play house with a sad, broken husband? "
Macey snatched up her coffee cup and hurled it against the marble fireplace. Porcelain shattered across the hearth. "Take that back." she screamed.
A green light blinked above the doorway as the prototype emergency system detected breaking glass. The shared-area microphones activated, and the encrypted recording began uploading to the independent building-security contractor. Neither twin noticed.
"You need to remember who planned this whole thing," Annabelle continued, stepping closer to Macey and pointing a finger at her.
"Who stole Joan’s discharge papers from her safe, scanned them, and changed the wording to make it look like she chose to end her pregnancy?
I did. Who stole her executive security key and used it to authorize the wire transfer through companies designed to implicate Graham? I did."
"And who put the sleeping pills in Graham’s sparkling water at the hotel bar?
" Macey shouted back, her face red with anger. "Who put Joan’s scarf on the chair and opened the champagne so Reiner would walk in and catch them? I did that. I took the risk, Annabelle. I’m the one who had to kiss Reiner in that hallway while he was crying over Joan! "
"And you enjoyed every second of it," Annabelle sneered, snapping her briefcase shut.
"Because you're foolish. You think Reiner actually loves you.
He doesn't love either of us, Macey. He is embarrassed, hurt, and angry at Joan. He accepted our offer because his pride was wounded and we made him feel powerful again. The moment his head clears, he’s going to look at you and see a cheap distraction. "
"You know it’s true," Annabelle said, snapping her briefcase shut. "I am building a permanent place for us at Loft International. If you keep acting like a jealous teenager over Reiner, you will ruin everything."
"I won't take it back, because it’s the truth," Annabelle said, picking up her briefcase. "I am building a permanent place for us at Loft International. I am making sure we get control of the money. If you keep acting like a jealous teenager over Reiner, you are going to ruin everything."
"If you push me out of the company agreement, Annabelle, I will tell Reiner everything," Macey threatened, her hands shaking at her sides. "I’ll tell him about the altered miscarriage paper. I’ll tell him Joan never cheated on him."
Annabelle stopped at the front door, turned, and walked back until she stood chest to chest with Macey. Her eyes had gone hard.
"You won't tell him anything," Annabelle whispered, her voice dangerously quiet. "Because if I go down, you go down with me. You drugged Graham Voss. That is a serious crime, Macey. You would go to prison for years."
Annabelle leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a harsh hiss.
"Besides, once Joan is discredited at the launch in two weeks, she’ll be gone forever. And if she ever tries to come back and interfere with our position... well, a double dose of those sleeping pills will make sure she never bothers us again."
Macey gasped, taking a step back. "You... you wouldn't."
"Don't test me," Annabelle said simply. She adjusted her suit jacket, turned on her heel, and walked out of the penthouse, slamming the heavy wooden door behind her.
Macey stood alone in the quiet living room, her chest heaving as she stared at the closed door.
Two hours later, Lena’s laptop made a loud chiming noise.
Lena sat up straight in her chair, her eyes widening as she read the alert on her screen. "Joan, look at this."
Joan rushed over to the table and leaned over Lena’s shoulder. "What is it?"
"It’s a new penthouse emergency archive," Lena said, her fingers moving across the keyboard.
"Macey broke a cup during the argument, and the system captured everything that followed. I’m still listed as corporate counsel for the lease, so I received the incident notice.
We can request the authenticated original and its chain-of-custody report. "
Lena clicked play.
The speakers on the laptop came alive. The clear, high-definition audio filled the small studio apartment.
Joan listened to Macey describe the hotel setup, Annabelle confess to forging the discharge paper and stealing the executive key, and both sisters expose the motives behind the scheme.
And then came the final, chilling words from Annabelle: Once Joan is discredited... a double dose of those sleeping pills will make sure she never bothers us again.
Joan leaned against the table, her face pale, but her eyes burning with a fierce light.
"They admitted to everything," Lena said, shock sharpening her voice. "The medication theft, the forged discharge paper, the drugged drink, the staged hotel scene, and the fraudulent transfer. It is all on the recording."
"And the emergency system captured it after the cup shattered," Joan said, a thin smile touching her mouth. "They tried to destroy my life, Lena. They wanted my husband, my company, and my reputation. Now they have handed us the confession that can take them down."
"I am taking this recording to the police right now," Lena said, already reaching for her phone. "The threat about a double dose makes this a matter of immediate safety, not merely corporate fraud."
Joan nodded as the desire for public vindication collided with the reality of Annabelle’s threat.
"Give the police everything. Ask whether they can coordinate the arrest with the launch.
Every suspect will be in one controlled location under Fijian jurisdiction, and the truth must enter the record where Reiner cannot bury it. "
Lena held Joan’s gaze. "The police decide the timing, not us. Your safety comes first."
"Agreed," Joan said. "No secrets and no delay. If investigators permit the event to proceed, the exposure will happen under their control, with authenticated evidence and officers already present."
Joan stood up straight, looking out the window at the city below.
"The Loft Haven press preview and soft launch begins in less than two weeks," Joan said, looking out over the city. "Reiner plans to stand before the board, investors, and international press with Macey and Annabelle at his side."
"You want to expose them there?" Lena asked, a look of realization dawning on her face.
"I want them on that stage believing they have won," Joan said. "I want Reiner to defend his choice before the world, then face the truth in the same room."
