Chapter 12 The Trap Reverses
The morning air inside the small studio apartment felt charged with energy. Lena stood by the window, finishing a phone call with outside legal counsel before turning back to Joan.
Within hours, New York financial-crimes investigators had copies of the recording, the access logs, the forged document, and Graham’s toxicology report.
Because the conspiracy crossed jurisdictions and every suspect would be present at Loft Haven, they coordinated with Fijian authorities.
Several officers would travel to the island as security consultants, while a local police launch waited beyond the resort dock.
"The audio is legally preserved," Lena said. "As corporate counsel listed on the penthouse lease, I requested a formal hold on the property server. The security contractor has secured the original file against deletion or alteration."
Joan nodded, feeling a quiet sense of relief.
The recording of her twin sisters turning on each other was safe.
In that twenty-minute file, Annabelle and Macey had admitted to everything: stealing Joan’s medication, forging her discharge-paper copy to make her miscarriage look like an elective termination, drugging Graham Voss at the hotel bar, framing Joan for the wire transfer, and staging the affair scene.
"This recording exposes almost their entire plot," Lena said, leaning against the kitchen counter. "We could hand this to the board right now. We could force Reiner to cancel the launch."
"No," Joan said. "If we show this to the board today, Reiner and his lawyers will reduce it to a private corporate emergency. The twins will dismiss the recording as an argument in which they said anything to hurt each other."
"So what is your plan?" Lena asked.
"We let them walk right into the trap they set," Joan replied, looking at the calendar on her wall. The Loft Haven press preview and soft launch was less than ten days away. The private-island resort was the biggest project of Joan’s career.
Every board member, major investor, international partner, and journalist would be on that island.
"I want them to commit themselves publicly," Joan explained. "I want them standing right beside Reiner when the truth comes out. They need to show the entire world exactly what they tried to take."
To keep the twins confident, Joan gave them room to expose themselves.
Over the next three days, Joan deliberately stayed quiet.
She made no public statements and did not contest her administrative leave through the media.
Sensing no pushback, Annabelle pushed Reiner to give her more power.
She convinced him that she needed official authority to manage the final setup for the Loft Haven launch.
Reiner, still angry at Joan and eager to keep the project moving forward, signed a temporary executive authorization form. The authorization gave Annabelle limited operational authority to approve minor vendor contracts and event schedules on the island.
When Lena received a copy of the signed document from the corporate secretary, she placed the authorization under legal hold and preserved the signed original as evidence. She did not challenge it immediately, allowing investigators to control the timing of the operation.
"He signed it without consulting the board," Lena said, studying Reiner’s signature. "He handed her authority over the launch you spent four years building."
"He thinks he’s in control," Joan said. "He thinks he’s rewarding the women who supported him."
But the cracks between the twins were growing wider by the day.
Late on Thursday afternoon, Joan’s personal phone vibrated on the table. The screen displayed an incoming call from an unlisted number.
Joan answered, pressing the speakerphone button so Lena could hear. "Hello?"
"Joan? Is that you?"
It was Macey, breathless and close to panic.
"I’m here, Macey," Joan said calmly. "Why are you calling me from an unlisted number?"
"I need to talk to you," Macey whispered. "I’m hiding in the penthouse dressing room while Annabelle is at the office. She told the event planners she will sit beside Reiner at the opening dinner and is pushing me to a side table. She is taking everything."
Joan traded a quick look with Lena, who immediately started recording the call on a separate legal device.
"Why does that surprise you, Macey?" Joan asked. "Annabelle has always used people. You knew what she was doing."
"No! We were supposed to be a team." Macey cried. "We were supposed to share this life with Reiner. But she doesn't care about Reiner, Joan. She only cares about the company and the money. She’s going to ruin everything."
"If you're so worried, Macey, why are you calling me?" Joan asked.
"Because I want to make a deal," Macey blurted out. "I will tell you everything. I will tell you how Annabelle set up the wire transfer. I’ll tell you how she changed the medical paper from your clinic. But you have to promise me one thing."
"What thing?"
"You have to promise you won't come back to Reiner," Macey begged, her voice rising with emotion.
"You have to let me keep him. Reiner loves me, Joan! He really does. He kissed me, and he told us he wants to try a relationship with both of us. He’s happy with me.
If I give you Annabelle, you have to leave Reiner to me. "
Joan felt a sharp sting in her chest at the mention of Reiner’s promise to her sisters. Hearing Macey talk about Reiner’s affection hurt, but Joan kept her voice steady.
"Tell me what happened, Macey," Joan said directly. "If you want my help, I need the full truth right now."
Fear and jealousy stripped away Macey’s remaining caution.
"It was all Annabelle’s idea at first," Macey confessed, her words spilling out quickly.
"She’s the one who faked those text messages between you and Graham Voss to make Reiner jealous.
And when Graham found out about that shell company payment, Annabelle knew he was going to tell you. So she told me to stop him."
"How did you stop him, Macey?" Joan asked.
"I wore a coat like yours and met him at the hotel bar," Macey admitted, her voice trembling.
"I slipped those sleeping pills from your prescription bottle into his sparkling water.
When he got dizzy, the hotel staff helped him up to the suite.
I put your scarf and your earrings in the room so Reiner would think you were sleeping with him. "
"And my medical records?" Joan pressed. "The document about my miscarriage?"
"Annabelle stole your discharge papers from the safe, scanned them, and forged a replacement," Macey said. "She changed the wording and medical codes to make it look like you chose to end the pregnancy yourself. She wanted Reiner to hate you so much that he’d never look at you again."
"And what about Reiner?" Joan asked, her voice dropping lower. "What did Reiner do?"
"He believed us." Pride entered Macey’s voice. "After you left the hotel, he drank at the penthouse while we told him you had chosen Graham. We offered to take care of him. He kissed me, then Annabelle, and agreed to a trial relationship with both of us while he planned to divorce you."
Joan closed her eyes and steadied her breathing. The confession was now captured in Macey’s own voice.
"And what is Reiner planning to do at the Loft Haven launch?" Joan asked.
"He’s going to announce it," Macey said, lowering her voice to an excited whisper.
"At the opening dinner, in front of the board and the press, he will say your affair ended the marriage and introduce Annabelle and me as the women standing beside him.
Annabelle thinks this is about power, but it is about us. "
"I see," Joan said.
"So do we have a deal?" Macey asked eagerly. "I gave you Annabelle’s whole plan! You won't try to take Reiner back, right?"
"Thank you for telling me the truth, Macey," Joan said smoothly. "Good luck with your speech prep."
Before Macey could reply, Joan ended the call.
The apartment fell silent after Joan ended the call. Lena stopped the recording device and studied her with concern.
"We have it," Lena said. "Macey confessed to the conspiracy on a recorded line—the fabricated messages, the forged hospital paperwork, Graham’s drugging, and the staged hotel room."
"Yes," Joan said, turning toward the window.
"Are you okay?" Lena asked gently. "Hearing her describe Reiner... hearing about the kisses and the public announcement..."
"It hurts," Joan admitted. "Part of me hoped Reiner had been confused or carried along by the deception without understanding his choices.
Macey confirmed otherwise. The twins manufactured the lies, but Reiner chose the kisses and the relationship because their version was easier than the truth of our marriage. "
"He made his choice," Lena said.
"And now he’s planning to stand on a stage in front of the world and use lies about my character to justify that choice," Joan said, her voice sharpening. "He wants to tell everyone that I betrayed him, so he can feel good about stepping into a life with my sisters."
"So what do we do next?" Lena asked, pulling up her legal presentation files on her screen.
"We prepare for the launch," Joan said, turning back to face her friend. "We package every piece of evidence we have. Graham’s toxicology report. The digital access logs from Annabelle’s laptop. The original miscarriage records from Dr. Warren. The penthouse security recording of their argument. And Macey’s phone confession. "
"And Reiner's signed authorization form?" Lena asked.
"Include that too," Joan said. "Because when I stand in front of that board, I want everyone to see not just the crimes my sisters committed, but the choices my husband made."
Joan picked up her co-founder credentials and board badge. Administrative leave could suspend her daily authority, but it could not erase her shares, her board seat, or her legal right to attend the Loft Haven press preview and soft launch.
She held the heavy plastic badge in her hand, feeling the raised letters of her own name: Joan Loft, Co-Founder & Chief Creative Officer.
"They think they are going to an island paradise to celebrate my destruction," Joan said, looking Lena in the eye. "They think I’m hiding in a corner, broken and defeated."
"They have no idea what's coming," Lena said with a confident smile.
"Let them pick out their dresses," Joan said, setting her badge back down. "Let Reiner write his speech. Let them celebrate as much as they want over the next week. Because when we get to that island, I am going to tear down their little fantasy piece by piece."
