Chapter 49 #2
“Don’t dismiss that as not real. The bond is fate and the feelings are real” he explained to me. “Then why do they go away when you break them?” I called out his logic.
“Who said they went away?” He asked me outright and it shocked me into silence. “W-what do you mean?” He smiled lightly and pulled my head down to rest on him. “Nothing, Mira.”
I went to protest but there was a knock at the door and Devran sighed. “We have work to do now” he patted my bum for me to stand.
“This isn’t me running off, okay? No ‘one night stand’ or whatever you accused me of last time” he pulled me to him when we stood up. I was a little sore between my legs.
“I know, there is a lot to be done,” I nodded. We got dressed after the person at the door was out there standing with clothes for his Alpha. What he wore before was bloody and torn.
“I want to be at the burials but no telling if I'll make it in time...do we know if it’s...anyone close to us?” I swallowed, afraid some of my friends might be dead.
“It’s what I have to go check now. I’ll see you later at the burials, okay? Don’t over exert yourself tonight” he pointed a long tan finger at me as if warning me.
I smiled at him but he must’ve seen in my eyes what I was trying to hide from him.
“What is it?” He asked.
I went on the tips of my toes and kissed him again.
“Nothing, let that kiss be the strength you need for tonight. Thank you for being my first” I told him.
I thought for a second that he said, “and last” but that had to have been in my head.
He went for the door but again he stopped like he did last time, feeling the need to kiss me one more time before leaving. That’ll be the last time. I tried to hold back the tears of knowing that.
I hope he doesn’t hate me for this.
-
When I opened my cottage door and was almost tackled I screamed with fear...until I recognized the earthy scent of my best friend.
“Jasper” I gasped, hugging him tighter to me.
I didn’t think I would be able to see him before I went but I was so thankful and glad I did. I started to cry even when I tried not to and he thought it was because of my fear of what happened today.
“As soon as we got news at the barracks that war had struck out we came rushing over. I was so worried about you that whole damn time. I’m so relieved” he kissed my head and hugged me again.
I whimpered and took in his smell one more time.
“I love you, Jasper” I made sure to tell him. “Love you too kid” he looked me over trying to assess the situation here.
I didn’t wanna let him see so I clapped my hands together and said, “Okay, I have to check on Mel and then I have to go do some work for the Moon Goddess. If you don’t already know then someone in town will explain. I’m on the clock though.”
I pointed to an imaginary watch on my wrist.
He nodded and walked outside with me. I couldn’t say bye to him again without crumbling so I just blew him a kiss the way Mel would and walked off without looking back.
“UGH, BITCH” I heard my other best friend when I went to see her.
“I was gonna come to you after that wild ordeal and your crazy magic save back there but I saw you go inside with Devran and decided to wait” she looked me up and down as if to see if I would squirm. I didn’t have time to.
“I have to go but I love you bitch” I hugged her even though I knew she’d be suspicious if I got any more sentimental than that.
After that I grabbed a few things I knew I would need and walked up to the sacred grounds.
I was shocked when I found so many people sitting inside the circle in rows as if to watch me at the altar. And those who couldn’t fit inside were outside the trees watching.
I swear I even saw a few people sitting on branches to get a better view. I had an audience today.
The people parted like the red sea when I approached the circle and then I was at the altar with a hundred eyes on me. I lit the candles and sat down in my meditation pose, closing my eyes to connect with the source.
From my bag I pulled out seeds and two empty jars. And with my hands I dug into the dirt and put soil in each jar. I placed my hands over them and the light language came through me as I spoke the words I did not know but understood.
Once the light language disipated I stood and handed the jar to the first woman I saw.
“You, take this soil, it is blessed. And here is the other. Spread this soil over any crop you need to flourish and it will bring you a bountiful harvest.”
I walked back to the seeds and placed them in my palms. Again the light language ran through me like a rush of something powerful. I could almost fall to the ground if I let the magic rush out of me too hard.
I’m too new to know how to control it all. In times of panic I release huge amounts of power but then I need that power to settle so it doesn’t drain my body.
I handed the seeds to a different woman and said, “Use these to plant the fields you’ll grow your crop in towards the East. In seven days you will be bountiful.”
I called forth the woman with a sick newborn child and she parted the crowd and walked through.
I took a few dead flowers and in my palm I blew a breath and the flowers were alive again. This wasn’t my usual flower trick though. These flowers were to heal the child.
“Steep these flowers into a tea for your son. It will heal him, but you promised the Moon Goddess something in your prayers. Do you understand?” I asked her. She nodded yes again.
In nature there is a balance.
The woman prayed that if her son was healed from sickness that she would take that on. Her son will survive but she won’t. This is the Luna of the Red Moon Pack and her husband died today.
“Your son will be a great warrior under the care of two fathers,” I told her. She thanked me and took the flowers as she bowed to me several times.
I took out two more jars full of water.
“I will leave this water here overnight. It will be blessed by the Moon Goddess and then you use this water to splash around the scorched earth affected by the fires and you will have enough healed wood to build your new homes” I told them last.
“I need a messenger” I asked out to the crowd.
A woman stood and I nodded for her to come to me. I whispered my message in her ear and her eyes went wide with surprise. I smiled at her and told her she will tell the people and the Alpha at sunrise and no sooner.
“You must leave me now to do the work of the Goddess” I told them.
When I looked around I was shocked to see every person and wolf here was kneeling with bowed heads for me like I was there Luna. I gaped at the sight.
I urged them all to stand up, but they stayed, bowing for me for a few more moments of silent respect before people began standing and leaving.
Many of them came to shake my hand and thank me for saving their people. I told them to thank the Goddess with offerings each month and waved everyone along.
She works through me. I shouldn’t take credit for what she’s given us. But everything has a balance...and for great blessings come great sacrifices.
