22. Part of the Family
CHAPTER 22
PART OF THE FAMILY
DELILAH
“ Y ou’re here!”
I look up to see Brynn and smile at her from my spot on the sofa.
“Why are you in here? Is Lola okay?”
I’d been lost in my thoughts and wondered how long I’d been here. Lola is fine, but I sat down and left the planet.
“She’s fine. I just got comfortable.”
“Tired?”
I can’t tell Miles’s sister I had wild sex with him just hours ago after doing it the night before, but I can nod, so I do.
“I guess. Isn’t that the norm with a toddler?”
“Probably. I don’t need to know that for a long time. Come on. Dinner is almost ready, and I want to see my brother.”
I stand and glance at Lola with her doll before following Brynn into the kitchen. Miles and his parents are chatting away in there as Linda stirs the chili, looking like she’s in heaven.
Miles looks at me before Brynn bounces over to him.
“You were awesome on that road trip. The team couldn’t have done too much better than you all did. Congratulations.”
“Thanks. It was a long week, but worth it. How are you?”
Brynn grabs some water as she talks about her life and classes, reminding me of college. It feels like yesterday, and I remember I have a degree, but I am so happy with this job. Well, with Lola and Miles, to be exact.
We get the chili to the table and Linda piles the bread on a plate before following Keith to the dining room. I feel so welcome here, as much as I do with my family. What would it be like to be here as Miles’s girlfriend? Would it be any different for him to be with my family like that?
So much so. Andrew comes to mind, and I smile automatically as I spoon chili into my bowl, setting it on the table with a few pieces of cornbread. Everything smells great, but my stomach twists and I look at Lola with her tiny bowl and spoon as she makes a mess all over her bib. I think she’s dropping more than she’s eating, but based on the smile on Lola’s face, she’s having a blast.
I feel eyes on me and look up to see Miles looking at me from the seat on the other side of Lola. He’s frowning and I smile before taking a bite of food, knowing he’s trying to read me right now.
The conversation flows as we eat, but I just listen to everyone, checking on Lola regularly. Miles does the same, and our eyes lock a few times before I make myself look away. Everyone is right here with us and if we slip up, someone might notice something.
I look around to see if anyone has noticed, but I think we’re safe.
The doorbell rings; Brynn stands to get it and voices fill the air. I’d know one of them anywhere and my brother walks in behind Brynn with a smile on his face.
“You’re here. Sit down and eat.”
He’s here. Was he invited? Linda’s tone suggests that, but I just smile as he joins us, filling a big bowl. I glance at Miles, and he looks as surprised as I feel.
“I invited him earlier, but Andrew didn’t know if he’d make it.”
Linda smiles at my brother and I want to shrink, though I’m not sure why. She adores him like a son and while she likes me, I feel like it’s not enough. They praise Andrew on the wins and the subject easily turns to hockey and I eat slowly just for show, though I want to run to the bathroom.
Lola finishes and asks to go to the bathroom, and I quickly offer to take her, standing up as Miles protests.
“You’re talking shop. I’ve got it.”
I walk with her to the bathroom in the hallway just to get away. Lola is independent and wants to do a lot on her own, but she needs help sometimes. I’ll be here for that.
What’s bothering me? Miles’s family is amazing, and I couldn’t ask for more. They treat me so much like my family does. More importantly, they adore Lola. That should be what matters.
I know I want more from Miles, not just his family. I want to be open about us and grow to love Lola like she’s my daughter, not just the child I’m caring for.
“Lilah?”
I open the door and help Lola, praising her for letting me know in time. We begin the walk back to the table, but she stops, saying she’s done and wants to play some more in her room.
“Let’s go. I’m finished, too.”
She wants me to read to her and I cuddle with her on the oversized sofa, watching as she reacts to the story she knows so well. This is the best feeling, though I never knew I wanted it before now. I was always about college and my career, but now the future feels so fuzzy.
“What are you guys doing in here?”
I looked up to see Miles and tell him Lola wanted to play. His eyes suggest he knows there’s more to it, but he tells me they’ll call when it’s time for dessert.
I am off the hook for now, but not forever.
We’re driving home after enjoying some chocolate cake and Lola’s head is bobbing in the back seat. I know she’ll be asleep soon and should be happy about that. Miles glances at me at the stoplight and I frown at him, pretending nothing is wrong.
“What happened back there?”
His voice is low but clear in the night and I break down everything in my head.
“I don’t know. They’re all there, including Andrew, and I have to hide us.”
“For the record, I didn’t know Mom invited him, but they are close so I’m not surprised. You did great apart from hiding for part of the night. Lola doesn’t need someone back there with her the entire time, you know.”
“She wanted books, and I knew she’d probably miss them later. You know I can’t tell her no.”
“I hope that’s how you feel about me.”
Of course, it is.
We get her home and Miles puts her to bed while I load the fridge up with the leftovers. As I stand, arms wrap around my waist, and I smile. Miles turns me to face him, kissing me with the same intensity I felt towards him all night.
“Hi.”
“Hey.”
I smile at him, and he draws me closer for another kiss. I wrap my arms around his neck and tilt my head to deepen it, enjoying his moan in response. Miles taps my leg and I wrap them around him so he can carry me to his room. He has practice tomorrow morning, so it’ll be back to the routine, and we need as much time as we can get together.
We’ve been in here a few times since he’s returned, but every time makes me feel as nervous as the first with Miles. His kisses and his touch are demanding as he strips me down before laying me on the bed. I give in to the way his lips feel over my skin, teasing me slowly until I’m begging him to let me come.
“I want to watch you touch yourself, Delilah. The way you did the other night.”
“But you’re here now.”
“It was so hot listening and I want to see. You’ll be rewarded. Consider it something I want to hold on to in my memory for the next travel week.”
“Oh, God. You’re not recording me, right?”
Miles laughs and shakes his head, and I settle back on the pillows. Heat washes over my skin as I look down at my relaxed legs and then my hand. I slide it between my thighs and touch the mess Miles created with his tongue as his eyes darken, watching me. I’m soaked and my fingers slip as I move lower to slide a finger inside, closing my eyes.
“That’s it. Fuck yourself, Delilah. Come so I can clean you up with my mouth.”
I open my mouth and breathe in as I move deeper, feeling incredible. This is hotter than the phone sex had been, and I open my eyes to see Miles wrap his hand around his cock. Our eyes lock as I keep moving, feeling the pressure building up as I add a finger and drive them deeper.
“Miles. God.”
I arch my hips as I come, gasping as he does the same on my stomach and chest.
“You’re going to make a mess.”
“We’ll shower in a second.”
Miles moves down between my legs as I slide the sheet around my torso, cleaning me of my orgasm and making me come again. When we’re done, he checks the monitor, and we shower quickly under hot water before stumbling to the bed for more.
I can’t get enough of Miles.
Riding him, I slide my short nails down his chest as he grips my hips. He’s deep inside of me, filling me, and I rise again as he rocks slowly with me. I moan and match him thrust for thrust. He grips my body tightly as my pleasure takes over and I drop my head back as I whisper his name.
I am over the edge in seconds as he keeps moving, finally stilling. I collapse to his side and close my eyes beside him. Miles cleans me up and takes the dirty sheets to the hamper as I make the bed with fresh ones.
“You should do everything naked.”
I look back to see him watching me.
“That might make your daughter ask too many questions.”
I pull the last corner tight and stand as he slides the sheet over it. We drape the thick comforter on the bed together and I help him pile the pillows in place.
“Bedtime?”
I look at Miles to see the heat in his eyes.
“As in both of us?”
“We’ll hear her wake up and she usually plays for a while. Get some clothes and have them ready.”
I can do that. I slip into my shirt to grab the other clothes, pausing in my room. Going to the closet, I grab leggings and a t-shirt along with a bra. My phone is in the kitchen, and I see the screen light up.
A: Already asleep? I wanted to stop by.
Since I can see it on my lock screen, it won’t show as being read and I leave it that way.
“Did Andrew text you?”
I drop everything on the dresser and wait for Miles to answer.
“Uh, no. Why?”
He glances at his phone on the nightstand, then back at me.
“He said he wanted to come over. What if he knows something?”
“What did you say?”
Miles sits up straighter, losing his relaxed posture.
“Nothing. I left it on the lock screen, so he won’t know I ever got it. He needs to think that.”
“We just saw him, but you weren’t in the room too much. Maybe he just wants to talk more to you. Andrew didn’t seem to pick up on anything tonight.”
“I hope so. Maybe I should go back to my room.”
“Delilah, Andrew doesn’t have a key and I have an alarm on the house. He won’t come over this late and break in. Come to bed.”
“He might know something, Miles.”
“Or he might just want to see his sister. If he knew something, Andrew would come in guns blazing.”
“I hate it when you’re right.”
That is exactly what would happen if Andrew found out about me and Miles. I hope the day never comes, but the more we push it, the closer we get to it.
