Chapter 40 - Regina
H ot.
What is going on?
First, I was freezing, and now I am sweating my ass off. Trying to push off the covers is a waste of time. It isn’t until my brain registers Chayce wrapped around me like a spider monkey that I realize I am safe.
Peering up, our eyes lock. Without thought, we kiss. It is all-consuming, as if we say a hundred things in that one act.
“Welcome back, love,” he barely manages to get out. “We thought we lost you.”
Before getting a chance to ask questions or comment, the door opens. Looking over my shoulder, the doctor has a soft smile on his face as he enters.
“Chayce, if you would please step out of the room? We shouldn’t be long,” he says as he starts gathering supplies.
Chayce hesitates, which, given the situation, is understandable.
“She will be fine,” Doctor Russell assures him. “I just need to check a few things and you can take her home.”
Begrudgingly, Chayce gets up and leaves the room.
The doctor asks me several questions about how I am feeling as well as performing some range of motion tests. He gives me some instructions to follow over the next several days, advising me to call his office if anything feels off. Once he has finished checking me out, he tells me that I am free to go.
Startling at the sight of Chayce standing in the hallway, the doctor chuckles from behind me.
He takes a step toward me and sweeps me up into his arms, carrying me to the lobby. He wraps me up in a heavy coat before picking me back up and walking me outside to his truck. Chayce starts the truck and drives us home, holding my hand like it’s a lifeline the entire way.
