Chapter 47 #2

They were getting dumber, too. People didn’t raise kids to be good hunters anymore.

Humanity had given itself over to sin and other delights.

Nala reveled in it as she leaned against a wall and watched a man light something that was definitely not a cigarette.

All she could do was laugh and try to avoid the smoke wafting in her direction.

She sauntered into the next room and nearly had her heart ripped from her chest.

A devilishly beautiful woman stood on the other side of the room.

Cool, confident, and with immaculately dark hair coiled on top of her head in a simple but invigorating twist.

Of course, any woman could try to pull it off.

Except this wasn’t any woman. This was a woman who instantly looked up and made eye contact with Nala.

It wasn’t often someone made her feel like this. Not just interested… but aroused. Let alone with only one look! What kind of magic was she using to rope Nala in so quickly?

That’s when she knew. In those precious few seconds in which she spotted this woman for the first time, she realized that she was more like her than Nala could have ever anticipated.

Legend said that a creature like her could change gender at will.

Whenever she heard this, Nala laughed. How was that possible?

The people who started that rumor wanted an excuse for their homoerotic activities.

As far as she knew, she had been a woman her entire existence.

She loved indiscriminately – if it could be called love – but she had always been her.

The idea that she could change her sex with a snap of her fingers was ludicrous.

Nevertheless, she rarely met the match to her womanhood.

She heard about them all the time – more often in the past than in the present – but encountering a fellow of her kind was about as likely as her being caught by a hunter.

I’ve often wondered if we had gone extinct.

As far as Nala was concerned, she may be one of the last of a dying species.

She had no intention to be like her mother and beget a child.

In this day and age? Nala loved her existence as a seductive succubus, but it was pointless to bring another of her kind into a world where they didn’t matter.

While she had both these pleasant and unpleasant thoughts, Nala maintained eye contact with this desirable lady.

Look at her. In her nice clothes. With her nice style.

I bet she smells good, too. She might have to go up and find out for herself.

The woman smirked, flashing a smile she probably flashed at a thousand people before Nala.

She walked the perimeter of the room. While music played and people drank and made merry around her, she intermittently glanced at the stranger near her.

Likewise, she continued to glance at Nala.

Was she marking her as a target? This is pointless.

Why would I waste my energies on someone of my own kind?

Then again, Nala had never been with another succubus before.

Perhaps it was time to have some new experiences while she had the chance.

Mating with another succubus didn’t further her innate goal of bringing the moral downfall of mankind. They couldn’t even have children, although Nala often thought they should be able to. Some powerful children right there… She blushed. Nala never blushed around anyone.

Then again, this wasn’t anyone.

How did she know that this stranger was one of her own?

Perhaps the same way she could tell the same thing about Nala.

A powerful aura extended from her. Sexual.

Dominant. Perfectly balanced between sin and virtue.

Mortals could exude that sort of aura too, but not like this.

This creature was femininity incarnate, like Nala was born to broadcast her own feminine, sexual wiles.

No wonder the people in the room were looking curiously between them.

They could sense their power. They could sense what would happen if these two came together and created a cosmic harmony to end the world.

Her mother never warned her about this. Some flippant words about the others’ existence were all Nala heard. She didn’t tell me what would happen if… If they made love.

Nala wanted to find out. The mortals could wait for her to have her strength again. She had a feeling this creature staring her down with nary a foul bone would tear her up and leave her to nurse her wounds when this was said and done. Good. That’s how a demon like her liked it.

She wasn’t going to wait for the other succubus to meet her halfway.

Nala approached, closing the enigmatic distance between them.

If there was one thing she could say about her seduction style, it was that she never waited for someone to make the first move once she decided her target.

Not even another succubus. She wouldn’t let them have the satisfaction.

“Wait,” Varen said, holding up her hand. Nala stopped, although she wasn’t sure why she listened. I’m already giving in. Fancy that. “Sorry. I wanted to make sure I got to drink all of you in before you said anything.”

Nala slightly cocked her head. “Why is that?” That voice almost melted against her skin. If this was how she sounded now… with a deep, almost sonorous quality that could lure a girl to sleep… well. “Do you recognize me?”

She wanted the stranger to say yes. How could she not recognize her? She was one of their kind, a woman always on the prowl and ready to pounce on any unsuspecting prey. Surely, she could sense her aura like she could sense hers.

Varen still smiled. “I suppose you could say that. Do you come here often?”

What coded language they used. Once the people around them gave up interest and went back to their hedonistic lives, however, Nala appreciated being left alone with her beautiful stranger.

“It’s my first time. You?” Perhaps this was the stranger’s usual hunting ground.

Nala had already discovered the amount of prey readily available in such a den of sin.

Yet Varen did not answer. Instead, she sipped from her glass of dark alcohol, eyes never leaving Nala. “It wouldn’t matter, because I can safely say I’ve never seen a woman as beautiful as you before now.”

A mortal woman would roll her eyes to hear that.

Nala? She wanted to shrug, because everyone told her that.

Of course I’m the most beautiful woman around.

Why wouldn’t I be? She wouldn’t be very good at her destiny if she couldn’t seduce someone with a single look.

Nevertheless, I like the flattery. Of course she did!

It made her more powerful to be recognized!

Nala laughed. “You are good, that’s for sure.”

“I must be if you came right over here.”

Nala batted her eyelashes, but kept her hands to herself.

Not that I want to. No, she definitely wanted to put her hands all over this woman and turn her into an extension of herself.

It wouldn’t be too hard. Wiggle her hips.

Wrap her arms around those pleasing shoulders.

They had to be careful. Their combined power might be too much for the others to handle.

Do I care? Not really. That was the best part.

“There are a lot of reasons to come over here. Do you know me?”

Varen’s smile faltered. “You keep asking me that. Should I know you from somewhere?”

“I mean… do you know what I am?”

Although she shook her head, Varen recognized her. “I know a lot of things in this world. What I know about you is that you’re a gorgeous creature.”

“A creature, you say.”

“Should I call you something else? Do you prefer to be called a woman?”

“Don’t most?”

“Actual women, yeah.”

“That’s where you’re making terrible assumptions.”

Nala leaned against the wall beside her, crossing arms and forcing a sweet pout.

“Regardless of what I really am, I’ll always be a woman. It doesn’t matter what you call me or how you dress me up. You think I can’t be as womanly as the others in this room?”

Varen gave the space a cursory glance. “Just as and more.”

“Damn straight.” Nala let her fingertip touch the soft fabric of Varen’s jacket sleeve. “You’re quite feminine yourself. Don’t you think of yourself as a woman?”

“I am certainly a woman.”

“Then I am too. Do you know what women can do together?”

“I’ve heard a few things.”

“Done a few things?”

Nala almost couldn’t stand this verbal foreplay. It was foreplay, right? Please let it be so. She didn’t often beg to be with someone.

“I may have done a few things, yes. Why are you asking?”

“You are coy. I kinda like that.” Nala ran her tongue over her teeth. “Usually, even women fall over backward for me.”

“I’m sure they do. I think you’ll find, however, that I’m not as easily swayed. Or seduced for that matter.”

That so? “You’re the kind of girl who gets to have her pick and then goes for it.”

“I suppose you could say that.”

“I am saying that.” Nala touched her, asserting that Varen was real.

“You’re used to entering a place, picking out someone for a night, and having no issue getting them into bed. Or keeping them out of bed, if you’re more into that. Let me guess…”

Nala continued, interrupting Varen before she had the chance to speak.

“You leave them completely worn out but still insatiable. I know that feeling well.”

Mortals ran out of stamina. But they always wanted more.

They begged Nala to finish them off for good.

She used to do that. Then it got harder to cover her tracks and keep the hunters off her.

Now she usually left partners in a stupor.

Better that way. Easier. Cleaner. I don’t get as much benefit, though.

That meant she had to go through more prey.

She wondered if she could get her fill with another like her.

Varen leaned her head in toward Nala’s. “You know an awful lot about me for a woman who has just met me.”

“Naturally. I’m observant.” Nala pushed out her chest. Surely, that would get her undying attention. “So, what do you think? Am I the kind of woman you decide on and leave completely insatiable in bed?”

“You’re bold. You don’t even know who I am.”

“I don’t need to know you. You don’t even have to tell me your name. In fact, I could go this whole night without knowing your name and be satisfied. Do you want to know my name?”

“I suppose there’s no harm in that.”

Nala cleared her throat. “My name is Nightingale.”

“Ah, the beautiful nightingale. A bird that sings a gorgeous song of mourning. Who knew that death could be so sweet?”
