Chapter 47 #4
In this era, they were so uncommon that they tended to have their separate hunting grounds that they rarely transgressed.
Nala’s was in this city. If another she-demon appeared, it would be grounds for a territorial brawl.
Nobody wanted to deal with that, especially in the modern era. It would draw way too much attention.
So the idea that there could be any other siren song being sung in that club was ridiculous. Nala would have sensed the bitch, anyway. Varen must have meant her. She was certainly haughty enough to believe it.
“I mean you, Nightingale. You are the one I came here for.”
She tried not to show her satisfaction. “Then what is stopping you? If you knew me and followed my energy here, then you must be interested in what we can offer one another. Surely, you’re not scared of me.”
“If I were scared of you, I wouldn’t be doing my job very well.”
Nala tilted her head. “What do you mean by that? Your job is to follow your instincts. If they led you to me, then it’s only natural we explore what two beings like us can accomplish.”
“This is what you tell me, yet I feel pressured to tell you otherwise.”
“Why is that?” Nala wished she weren’t so much shorter than this woman. She would love to plant a kiss on her cheek and show Varen how right she was. “Don’t tell me you’re thinking about taking your life on a different path. How would you survive?”
“It’s not that, believe me.” Varen inched away from her. “I told you, Nightingale. I was drawn to your energy. I came here with a purpose that included you.”
“So what’s the problem? Everything works under those clothes, right?”
She snorted again. “Oh, yeah, everything works.”
Nala wrapped both arms around her. Slowly, but surely, she was enticing Varen into her world. “Then what are you waiting for? Kiss me, and let’s see where this story takes us.”
She didn’t think she would do it. Nala wasn’t yet deluding herself into thinking that she had Varen wrapped around her finger.
Yet… when Varen kissed Nala’s forehead, she felt warmth cover her skin and take her to another universe.
So this is what it feels like to be kissed by me?
If this is what Nala felt, then how did those mortals contend?
She was already swaying back and forth on her heels.
Varen’s lips moved from Nala’s forehead to her mouth, and what a blessed state of affairs, because the moment they properly kissed, Nala nearly fell over and died.
She had kissed many in her long existence.
Usually, she kissed as a precursor to taking more.
Sirens didn’t need to eat. They only consumed sustenance for pleasure.
No, the only sustenance she needed was the sexual energy of mortals.
Varen wasn’t like that, but she certainly had as much, if not more sexual energy than the woman she was drawn to.
She melted in Varen’s embrace, letting their bodies fuse the longer this tantalizing kiss lasted.
Varen tipped Nala’s head back and plundered her mouth, eating her up, devouring her like such a wretch like she did to other women who were not as strong as her.
This is almost too much. The power emanating from this woman was too much to resist.
Nala could barely stand it! Is this what my prey feels before I do them in?
If Nala could harness even a bit of her power for her own, she could be sustained for years. Years.
Her thoughts disappeared the moment Varen pinned her against the wall and proved to the whole room that Nala belonged to her.
Had two entities ever appeared so famished in this place?
Everything inside Nala readied for Varen.
Her heart quickened. Her breasts begged to be touched, squeezed.
Her legs opened and she pulled on the hem of her dress when she had the chance.
She didn’t care if everyone in the club saw her naked.
Why would it matter at all? Let the mortals bask in their fucking glory.
It should have been simple. She seduced Varen. Or maybe Varen seduced her. Either way, Nala was at her mercy, or so she let Varen think. Many mortals pinned her to things and gave to her. Varen was no different in that regard.
It should have been simple.
Her revelry ended abruptly when Varen pushed her against the wall, hand lightly wrapped around her throat. Varen’s other hand rooted for something in her jacket pocket. Nala squirmed, looking at Varen as if she had lost her mind.
When the cold metal of a collar replaced Varen’s hand, Nala knew she was doomed. When a leash tugged on her throat, she knew that the one thing she had been taught to fear the most had finally come for her. Like a fucking idiot, she walked right into a trap.
Betrayed… The weight of the collar would have drowned her in water.
Even if she were a rusalka of Slavic lore deep inside, she could still drown, again and again, but the only one who could make that happen was a hunter.
The hunter who now pinned her back against the wall, tightening the collar and pulling the leash taut.
“I’ve been tracking you for too long, Nightingale,” Varen hissed in her ear, hips pushing her against the wall. “Tonight, it ends. Tonight, I wipe your menace from this city.”
The siren felt something she hadn’t experienced in at least a century: fear. Terrible, arousing fear.
