The aftershocks of the most intense orgasm Cam had ever experienced reverberated through his body, but he ignored that.

Mary had just run for the bathroom as if scalded.

He went cold. Had he hurt her? He knew he was big and he was sure she’d been with him, but those last few moments ...

he’d been gripped by his own desperate pursuit of pleasure.

He cursed and got off the bed, disposing of the protection in a bin. He wouldn’t be surprised if it had melted in that conflagration. Damn. This woman brought out a side of him he’d never really experienced before. Primal. Desperate.

He pulled on a robe that was hanging on the back of the door, then stood outside the bathroom door, listening. He couldn’t hear anything. He knocked lightly, a tight knot in his belly. ‘Mary? Are you OK?’

Silence. Cam cursed, volubly this time. ‘Damn it, what did I do? Did I hurt you?’

From inside came a shaky sounding, ‘No. No, you didn’t hurt me.’

The knot inside Cam eased slightly. ‘I’m going to come in, OK?’

When she didn’t tell him not to, Cam turned the handle and pushed the door open.

The knot was back, but in his chest this time when he saw the sight in front of him.

Mary, sitting on the closed toilet, with his shirt pulled haphazardly around her.

Even in the midst of this moment, he could appreciate it had never looked that good on him.

Her hair was down around her shoulders, mussed up. Her eyes were huge, the colour of crushed brown velvet. It struck him again how stunning she was.

Focus.

He came down on his haunches before her, putting his hands over hers on her knees. ‘What is it, sweetheart?’ Sweetheart? He’d never called anyone sweetheart in his life, but words like this were tripping out of his mouth and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

She looked at him. Cheeks still flushed, mouth plump. His body stirred. He had to exert every ounce of control he had to curb his lust. Not the time.

‘I just ...’ She faltered. He waited, let her speak. She tried again. ‘I just hadn’t expected this to be so intense.’ She’d taken one hand out from under his and gestured between them.

‘I didn’t hurt you ... are you sure?’

She shook her head, more glossy hair slipping over her shoulder. Now she looked shy. ‘No, not at all ... I ... loved it. I never knew sex could be so ...’ She trailed off.

‘Yeah.’ Cam finished for her. ‘Me neither.’

He stood up and held out a hand. She took it and he pulled her up. ‘Have a shower and freshen up, and then let’s just take a breath, OK?’

She looked up at him and nodded, and Cam had to grit his jaw. In spite of his noble pronouncement, all he wanted to do was rip that shirt off her and take her back to bed, but he had to admit that the strength of the chemistry between them was freaking him out a little too.

He’d had great sex before, but the pleasure had always faded fast and he’d never wanted more with the same woman. This, with Mary, was in another league. He felt like she’d ignited a hunger that would never be quenched.

But it would be quenched. That’s why he’d asked her to come to New York, so they could indulge in this white-hot chemistry and burn it out.

And it would burn out, he assured himself, because, as he knew, nothing lasted for ever. And that was fine, because he didn’t want forever.
