29. Chapter Twenty-Nine

Chapter twenty-nine

Trevor did his best to keep out of the way while the CDC professionals went about their work.

He spent the next hour perched on the stool, bored and wishing he had a book or a magazine.

Not that a book would do him much good. It would be nearly impossible to turn the pages inside the hazmat suit.

Instead, he watched the doctors while they ran tests on strange equipment and wondered how things were going for Samantha.

If Shore was right, if the virus was man-made, then CIA would be forced to investigate.

Surely that would rebalance the equation.

He and Samantha might still be in a little hot water for bucking orders, but they had been the first to tumble to a terror organization manufacturing biological weapons. That had to count for something. Right?

Doctor Shore did his best to narrate while he worked.

Trevor only half listened. The virologist prattled on about geneses, and antibodies, and incubation periods.

Most of it was over Trevor’s head. He was hot and uncomfortable inside the suit and desperately needed something to wet his throat.

Sweat trickled down his cheeks and gathered at the small of his back.

He didn’t know how the CDC investigators could stand to work like this.

He kept getting itches that he couldn’t scratch. It was maddening.

At last, just when Trevor had decided he might step outside the tent and go for a walk to change up the scenery, the two CDC doctors turned to each other and then to Trevor. Doctor Shore announced, “Proof positive.”

“You’re done?” Trevor stood up.

Shore nodded. The gesture was barely visible inside the space suit. “My suspicions were correct. There can be no doubt LB426 is man-made.”
