27. Decision Reflections
Decision Reflections
Samantha
The sun crests over the ridge, casting a golden glow across the ranch. The air is crisp, thick with the scent of damp earth and fresh hay. I stand on the porch, coffee warming my hands, watching the world slowly wake around me.
The ranch has its own rhythm, a heartbeat I’ve come to recognize—the shifting of horses in their paddocks, the distant lowing of cattle, the soft murmur of voices from the barn as the first tasks of the day begin.
Behind me, the door creaks open, and Drake steps onto the porch to join me.
"Couldn’t sleep either?" His voice is low, still rough with sleep.
I shake my head, taking another sip of coffee. "Too much to think about."
He steps beside me, close enough that the warmth of him cuts through the morning chill. "What’s on your mind?"
I exhale, my gaze lingering on the horizon. "The summit. The future. Everything we’re trying to build here."
He nods, his eyes tracking the same distant point as mine. "It’s a lot."
"It is." I glance up at him, finding his expression thoughtful, his brow furrowed. "But it’s also worth it."
Something flickers in his eyes—understanding, agreement, something deeper.
"Yeah," he murmurs. "It is."
We stand there, wrapped in the kind of quiet that only comes with certainty. The kind that settles into your bones, the kind that makes a place feel like home.
The barn is already bustling with movement when I step inside.
Claire and Margaret stand near the worktable, papers spread between them, heads bent in discussion.
Roy and Ethan are by the whiteboard, gesturing as they go over fencing plans.
Helen scans a column of figures, her lips pressed into a thin line.
I take a deep breath, straighten my shoulders, and step forward.
"Morning," I say.
Margaret looks up first, offering a small smile. "We were just going over the final numbers for the partnership agreement."
"Any red flags?"
Helen taps the board, eyes sharp. "A few logistical concerns, but nothing we can’t handle."
I nod, flipping open my notebook. "Then let’s make sure we iron them out before the summit."
The discussion deepens, moving through financing, structural concerns, the unspoken balance of trust that hangs over every decision.
This isn’t just about business. It’s about legacy. About making sure that what we build lasts.
By midday, the heat settles over the land, thick and heavy. The barn doors are flung open, letting in a lazy breeze. Outside, the ranch hums with life—a well-oiled machine, but also something more.
I linger by the paddock, watching Emmy lead Daisy through a makeshift jump course. She laughs, her voice light, unburdened in a way only a child’s can be.
"You’re getting good at that," I call.
She beams at me, brushing a stray curl from her face. "Daisy’s doing all the work!"
I chuckle, leaning against the fence. "You’re a team. That’s what matters."
Her expression turns thoughtful, her fingers stroking Daisy’s mane. "Like you and Daddy?"
The question catches me off guard, but I don’t let it show.
"Yeah," I say, my voice softer now. "Like me and your daddy."
She grins, as if that answer is exactly what she needed. And just like that, something settles in me. This isn’t just a place anymore. It’s home.
The afternoon is a blur of final preparations—negotiations, planning, last-minute adjustments. The kind of work that leaves you tired but satisfied.
By the time dusk rolls in, the air has cooled, a soft breeze whispering across the porch. I stretch, letting the tension drain from my muscles.
Drake is already outside, whiskey in hand, watching the first stars flicker to life.
I sink into the chair beside him.
"Long day," I murmur.
He chuckles, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "That’s becoming a habit around here."
Silence stretches between us, thick with unspoken things.
Then, softly, he says, "You still thinking about leaving?"
The question knocks the air from my lungs. I turn to him, startled. "What?"
"You were always so sure you wouldn’t stay," he says, his gaze steady, unreadable. "And now…"
I exhale, setting my glass down. "Now, like I said earlier, I don’t want to go." The words hang between us, heavy with meaning.
Drake shifts, turning toward me, leaning in just enough that his presence becomes undeniable.
"So stay."
My pulse races. I swallow, searching for the right words. "Drake—" Before I can finish, he reaches for my hand, his thumb brushing over my knuckles.
"I’m not asking you to make a decision tonight," he says, voice low, firm. "But I need you to know that I want you here. With me. With Emmy. With this ranch."
Something tightens in my chest. A moment of absolute clarity.
"I want that too," I whisper.
And for the first time, I let myself believe it.
The night deepens, wrapping around the ranch like a quiet promise.
Drake’s fingers tighten around mine. "I meant what I said," he murmurs.
I nod. "I know."
His eyes search mine, dark and steady. "So what happens next?" I take a slow breath, feeling the weight of the moment settle into something certain.
"We build," I say.
And then I kiss him. Slow. Sure. Like a promise.
The next morning, the ranch moves like it always does—steady, alive. The summit looms ahead, anticipation thick in the air.
But beneath it, something has shifted. I see it in the way Drake watches me. I feel it in the way my heart beats when I’m near him.
And I hear it in Emmy’s laughter, in the way she reaches for my hand, like she already knows.
This isn’t just a job anymore. It’s a life. And I’m not going anywhere.
Drake and I spend the afternoon reviewing the final summit details, ensuring everything is ready. The weight of what’s coming lingers, but it doesn’t feel heavy anymore.
Because we’re in this together.
The ranch hands gather for a meal before dusk, voices filling the air, a sense of unity settling around us.
For the first time in a long time, I exhale. Just as the sun dips below the horizon, a sharp knock echoes against the front door.
Drake and I exchange a glance.
I push to my feet, crossing the room.
When I open the door, my breath catches.
Standing there, in the fading light, is someone I never expected to see again.
And in that moment, I know—
Everything is about to change.
