28. Together, Unbounded

Together, Unbounded

Drake

The ranch is quieter now, the energy from the summit settling into something heavier, something deeper. Agreements have been made, hands shaken, decisions finalized.

And yet, the weight of the day lingers in my bones. It’s not just about the land anymore. It’s about legacy. Trust. Knowing that, for the first time, I don’t have to carry it alone.

I lean against the wooden fence, my gaze sweeping over the land that’s been in my family for generations. The night stretches vast and open, a deep indigo sky scattered with stars. Somewhere in the distance, a horse snorts softly, the rustling of leaves filling the silence between us.

Samantha stands beside me, arms resting on the top rail. She looks relaxed, but I can tell her mind is still working, still running through numbers and details.

"You ever just stop thinking for a second?" I murmur, glancing sideways at her.

She exhales a soft laugh. "Not really."

I shake my head, smirking. "Figured."

She nudges me lightly with her elbow. "This is kind of a big deal, Drake. Your ranch’s future, your legacy. I just want to make sure we get it right."

I watch her, the way the moonlight softens the sharp edges of her face, the way her lips curve slightly in that way I’ve come to recognize—thoughtful, determined, wholly hers.

"You already did," I say. "We already did."

She turns toward me then, fully looking at me. "You really believe that?"

I nod, slow and sure. "Yeah. I do."

Her expression shifts, something softer, something deeper. But I don’t push. Because for the first time in a long time, I’m not uncertain about what comes next.

Inside the barn, the scent of hay, leather, and the lingering warmth of the day thickens the air. The doors are cracked open, allowing a cool breeze to drift in. A few ranch hands linger by the workbench, voices low as they discuss tomorrow’s work.

Samantha and I step inside, and it feels different than it did earlier. Like something has settled, something has become permanent.

She tucks her notebook under her arm, glancing at the ledgers and documents scattered across the table.

"We should probably start organizing these," she says. "Now that everything’s official."

"Yeah," I agree, rubbing a hand along my jaw.

She moves toward the worktable, flipping through old records. "It’s crazy to think how much history is packed into these pages."

I step beside her, running a finger along the worn leather of one of the oldest books. "My great-grandfather documented everything. Every deal, every change to the land. He wanted to make sure nothing got lost."

She looks up at me, curiosity flickering in her eyes. "And you’ve kept it going?"

I nod. "Tried to."

She flips open one of the older books, carefully scanning the pages. "It’s like reading a story. The story of this place."

I watch her, the way her fingers trace the ink, her brows pulling together in concentration.

"You like history, don’t you?" I ask.

She huffs a soft laugh. "I do. Especially when it’s tied to something real."

I smirk. "So, what? You gonna start a memoir on Willow Creek Ranch?"

She grins, flipping a page. "Maybe. How to Wrangle a Billionaire Rancher has a nice ring to it."

I chuckle, shaking my head. "Careful. That might sell too well."

She winks. "Exactly."

And just like that, the weight of the day eases a little more.

By the time we make our way back to the house, the ranch has settled into its nightly rhythm. The sky is a stretch of deep blue, and the air carries the distant hum of crickets.

Samantha walks beside me, her steps slower, more measured. Like she’s taking it all in.

"You ever think about what this place was like before?" she asks suddenly.

I glance at her. "What do you mean?"

She gestures toward the open fields. "Before all of this. Before the houses, before the barns. Just land. Wild and untouched."

I let the thought settle in my mind, imagining it.

"No fences," I murmur. "No roads. Just open land."

She nods. "It’s kind of amazing, isn’t it? How people shape a place. How a place shapes people."

I watch her, the way her mind works, the way she’s always looking deeper, searching for meaning.

"Yeah," I say quietly. "It is."

Inside the house, the warm glow of the lamps casts soft shadows along the wooden floors. There’s a weight in the air, not heavy, but felt—like history lingers in the walls, whispering in the quiet spaces.

Samantha crosses the room, setting her notebook on the dining table, her fingers skimming over the old documents we left earlier.

"We should probably go through these," she says, glancing up at me.

I nod, grabbing the bottle of whiskey from the shelf and pouring us both a glass.

"Might as well make a night of it."

She smirks, accepting the glass. "You just want an excuse to drink whiskey and avoid paperwork."

I grin. "You caught me."

We sit, sifting through ledgers, old contracts, dusty records—the quiet comfortable, familiar.

Then—

Samantha stills.

"Drake," she murmurs.

I glance up. "Yeah?"

She carefully lifts an old, leather-bound book from the stack, the edges worn, the pages yellowed with age.

"This one’s different," she says softly.

I lean in, studying it.

And then I see it.

Not a ledger. Not a contract.

A journal.

Samantha slowly turns the pages, the handwriting strong, deliberate.

And then—she gasps.

"Drake," she whispers, her fingers stilling on a page.

I move closer, peering over her shoulder.

And my chest tightens.

Because there, tucked between the pages, is something unexpected.

A letter. Sealed. Unopened. And addressed to me.

My pulse thunders in my ears as I reach for it, my fingers brushing against the paper, fragile with time.

Samantha’s eyes search mine, the weight of the moment settling over both of us.

"What do you think it is?" she asks softly.

I swallow hard, exhaling slowly.

"I don’t know," I murmur.

But I do know one thing—

Whatever’s inside this envelope changes everything.

And with Samantha beside me, I’m ready to find out.
