29. Our Beginning
Our Beginning
Drake & Samantha
Drake
The morning sun stretches across the rolling pastures, turning the sky into a soft blend of gold and pink. The air is crisp, laced with the scent of fresh earth, saddle leather, and distant woodsmoke curling from the main house.
I step onto the porch, coffee in hand, watching as the ranch stirs awake in slow, steady ease. Horses shift in their stalls, ranch hands begin their morning rounds, and somewhere, Samantha’s laughter rings out, clear and bright as dawn itself.
I find her near the corral, brushing Daisy while Emmy chatters beside her, her hands animated as she tells some grand story.
Seeing them together—the two people who changed everything—settles something deep in my chest. A quiet kind of certainty, the kind that makes a man stop and realize he’s exactly where he’s supposed to be.
Samantha turns, catching sight of me, and her smile is like the first warmth of spring after a long winter.
"Morning, cowboy," she calls. "You coming to help or just standing there looking handsome?"
I chuckle, taking a slow sip of coffee. "Can’t I do both?"
Emmy rolls her eyes, tugging at Samantha’s sleeve. "See? I told you he’d say that."
I shake my head, setting my coffee down on the fence post as I stride toward them. "Alright, alright. What’s the plan for today?"
Samantha and Emmy exchange a look, something conspiratorial.
"Oh, we’ve got big plans," she says.
"Big plans, huh?" I arch a brow. "And do these big plans involve me?"
Emmy nods vigorously. "We need your help setting up the barn for tonight."
I glance at Samantha, questioning. She shrugs, feigning innocence. "You’ll see."
Something about the way she’s looking at me tells me I’m in for a surprise.

By midday, the ranch hums with movement, a quiet energy weaving through the land as preparations for tonight’s gathering take shape.
Drake has been suspicious all morning, but he hasn’t pressed me for answers—which is one of the things I love about him.
He trusts me.
It took us a long time to get here, to this place of absolute certainty. And now, standing in the middle of the barn, watching as Emmy carefully arranges lanterns on the beams while the ranch hands string up lights, I know we’ve made the right choice.
The right home. The right life. The right forever.
Margaret steps beside me, handing me a clipboard. "You sure you don’t want me to spill the beans to Drake?"
I grin. "Nope. Let him stew a little longer."
She chuckles, shaking her head. "That man would do anything for you, you know."
I glance across the barn where he’s helping Roy move hay bales, his shirt sleeves rolled up, arms flexing with each lift. He catches me watching and smirks.
Yeah. I know.

As evening settles in, the ranch takes on a different kind of glow. Lanterns flicker along the fence lines, casting soft golden light across the pastures. Tables have been set up near the barn, draped in white linen, the scent of grilled steak and fresh-baked bread thick in the air.
I turn toward Samantha, still not entirely sure what’s going on, but before I can ask, Emmy tugs on my sleeve.
"Daddy," she says, her voice full of excitement, "you have to come with me."
She leads me toward the barn, and the moment we step inside, everything changes.
The space has been transformed. Twinkling lights dangle from the rafters, wildflowers are arranged in mason jars along the tables, and a small group of friends and family stand near the front, smiling.
At the center of it all—Samantha.
She steps forward, her blue dress swaying, eyes full of something I can only describe as home.
"Drake," she says softly, "I wanted tonight to be special because it’s not just any night. It’s the beginning of everything."
I stare at her, my heart pounding.
Then Emmy steps beside her, holding up a small velvet box.
I glance between them, realization dawning. "You—"
Samantha laughs, tears glistening in her eyes. "I know, I know. You probably had a whole plan of your own. But I couldn’t wait any longer."
I let out a slow breath, my chest tightening in the best way. "You’re asking me?"
She nods, grinning. "I love you, Drake Harrison. I love this ranch, this life, everything we’ve built together. And I don’t want to wait another second to start forever with you."
Emmy holds out the ring. "Say yes, Daddy."
A deep chuckle rumbles through my chest as I take the box from her, flick it open, and see the simple silver band inside.
I turn back to Samantha, my whole world standing right in front of me.
"You think I’d say no?" I murmur.
She shakes her head. "I was hoping you wouldn’t."
I take her hand, slipping the ring onto her finger, and before she can say another word, I pull her into me, kissing her with everything I have.
The room erupts into cheers, but all I hear is the sound of forever settling into place.

Later that night, after the toasts have been made and the stars shine bright above the ranch, I stand beside Drake near the corral, Emmy fast asleep in his arms.
"I never thought I’d end up here," I whisper, watching as the horses graze in the moonlight.
Drake looks down at me, his gaze steady. "Where?"
I smile, resting my head against his shoulder. "Home."
He presses a kiss to my forehead, holding me close. "Me neither."
The night stretches before us, endless and full of possibility.
And I know—
This is just the beginning.

Months pass. The ranch flourishes, but more importantly, so do we.
Samantha walks through the pasture, Emmy giggling as she races ahead. I watch them from the porch, my heart full in a way I never thought possible.
She catches my gaze, and I see it—the same certainty, the same love.
This isn’t just a place anymore.
This is our forever home.
