9. Chapter 9 (Olivia) #2
He releases me, stepping back with a satisfied smile. "But don't take my word for it. Ask him yourself. Ask him what really happened to Jessica. Ask him why he really took this assignment."
I look at Noah—really look at him. At the man who's saved my life multiple times. Who's kissed me like I was salvation. Who's been lying to me since the day we met.
"Noah?" My voice cracks on his name. "Tell me he's wrong."
"The truth is complicated," Noah says finally, each word seeming to cost him. "Damascus... I did things I'm not proud of. Made choices that?—"
"Killed people?" My voice rises despite the gun still aimed at my head. "Betrayed people who trusted you?"
"Yes." The admission hangs in the air between us. "But everything after that—with Jessica, with you—it's different."
Chen laughs softly. "Is it? Show her the last video."
The tablet flickers to life again, showing security footage from the Randall Industries parking garage. The night Jessica died. I watch as she runs through the frame, terror clear on her face. Watch as Noah follows, weapon drawn.
"Stop," Noah pleads. "Olivia, don't?—"
But I can't look away. On screen, Jessica turns, saying something to Noah. Trusting him even then. The timestamp matches exactly when Chen said the shooting happened.
The footage cuts out before the fatal shot.
"Technical difficulties," Chen says smoothly. "Or perhaps Noah's conscience getting the better of him? After all, it's one thing to kill a stranger in Damascus. Quite another to watch someone you care about die."
"I didn't—" Noah starts, but Chen cuts him off.
"You didn't pull the trigger? No. You just led her there. Just like you're leading Ms. Blackwood now."
My chest feels too tight, each breath a struggle. The pieces are falling into place—horrible, inevitable pieces that explain everything. Why Noah knew so much about Randall Industries. Why he was always one step ahead of the threats. Why he pushed me away every time I got too close to the truth.
"The formula is elegant in its simplicity," Chen continues. "Find someone getting too close to the truth. Assign Noah to protect them. Let him work his magic—the tortured hero act, the gradual trust-building, the inevitable emotional attachment. And then..."
He gestures to the tablet, to Jessica's final moments frozen on screen.
"You're wrong about him," I say, but the words lack conviction. "He's been helping me. Protecting me."
"Has he?" Chen's smile is almost pitying. "Or has he been steering your investigation exactly where we want it? Keeping you focused on Marcus Randall while the real operation continues undetected?"
Noah strains against his restraints. "Olivia, listen to me. Everything I told you about Project Oracle, about the weapons?—"
"Was exactly what we wanted her to know," Chen finishes. "Breadcrumbs, Ms. Blackwood. Leading you down a carefully constructed path."
My head spins as I reevaluate every moment, every revelation, every time Noah conveniently had the exact information I needed. Even our growing closeness—was that calculated too? Another tool in his arsenal of manipulation?
"The cabin," I say suddenly. "The break-in, the chase—was that all staged?"
"Give the lady a prize." Chen's eyes glitter with satisfaction. "Although Noah's feelings for you... those might have been real. He always did have trouble maintaining professional distance. Ask Jessica. Oh wait..."
"That's enough." Noah's voice carries a dangerous edge I've never heard before. "You've made your point."
"Have I?" Chen moves behind my chair, his hands resting on my shoulders. "Because I think Ms. Blackwood deserves to know exactly what kind of man she's been trusting. Exactly what kind of fate she's been racing toward."
He leans down, his breath hot against my ear. "Tell me, my dear—has he kissed you yet? Told you he'll protect you? Made you feel special, chosen, safe?"
Each word hits like a bullet, because yes—Noah has done all those things. Has made me feel exactly that way. And now...
"You're lying," I say again, but I'm not sure who I'm trying to convince.
"Am I?" Chen straightens, returning to the tablet. "Then let's watch the unedited version of Jessica's last moments. Let's see exactly how your protector operates when?—"
The lights go out.
In the sudden darkness, several things happen at once:
An explosion rocks the cabin from somewhere outside.
Chen's grip on my shoulder loosens.
And Noah's voice, deadly calm, cuts through the chaos:
"Now, Olivia. Like we practiced."
Without thinking, I throw my head back, connecting with Chen's face. His grip releases completely as I drop and roll, just like Noah taught me. Gunfire erupts above my head—but not from Chen's men.
From the trees outside.
"Detective Grant sends her regards," Noah's voice comes from a different position now. There's a sound of breaking zip-ties, of bodies hitting the floor.
Then strong hands find me in the dark, pulling me up and against a familiar chest. Noah's heart pounds against my palm as he guides me toward what I know is the hidden exit in the pantry.
"Trust me one last time," he whispers. "Please."
And despite everything—despite the videos and the lies and the horrible truths revealed tonight—I do.
God help me, I still do.
Noah moves us through the darkness with supernatural precision, his hand firm around mine as we navigate the narrow escape tunnel I never knew existed. Behind us, chaos erupts—shouts, gunfire, the sound of Detective Grant's tactical team breaching the cabin.
My mind races faster than my feet, trying to process everything that's happened. The videos. Damascus. Jessica. Every revelation feels like another brick weighing me down, but Noah pulls me forward relentlessly.
"The tunnel leads to a bunker," he says quietly, his voice echoing off close walls. "We'll be safe there until?—"
"Safe?" I jerk my hand from his grip. "Like Jessica was safe? Like Dr. Kazemi was safe?"
He stops, and in the dim emergency lighting, I see the pain etched across his face. "Olivia?—"
"Don't." My voice breaks. "Don't say my name like that. Like you care. Like any of this was real."
"It is real." He moves closer, and I back away until I hit the tunnel wall. "Everything I feel for you?—"
"Is part of your mission?" The laugh that escapes me sounds hysterical even to my own ears. "Your perfect formula? Get close, gain trust, then what? Lead me to another parking garage?"
"I'm trying to save your life!"
"By lying to me? By working with them?" The questions burst out like bullets. "How long, Noah? How long have you been reporting to Chen?"
His silence is answer enough.
"The night we met," I realize, the truth hitting me like a physical blow. "When Jackson hired you. That's why you knew about the break-in before it happened. Why you were already there."
"Yes." The admission seems to cost him. "But not for the reasons you think."
More gunfire echoes from above, closer now. Noah glances back the way we came, his body tensing.
"We don't have time for this," he says. "They'll find the tunnel entrance soon."
"Then make time." I plant my feet, refusing to move. "Tell me one true thing, Noah. Just one. Was any of it real? Or am I just another Jessica? Another mission to complete?"
He moves so fast I barely register it before his hands are cupping my face, his forehead pressed to mine. His breath is warm against my lips as he whispers:
"You were never the mission, Olivia. You were the reason I finally broke protocol. The reason I contacted Grant. The reason I'm burning three years of deep cover right now."
My heart pounds against my ribs. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying I've been working to take down Chen's operation since Jessica died.
Playing the loyal soldier, feeding him just enough intel to stay trusted while I gathered evidence.
" His thumbs brush my cheeks, wiping away tears I didn't realize had fallen.
"But then you came along with your investigation, getting too close too fast, and he ordered me to handle you the same way I handled Jessica. "
"And instead?"
"Instead, I fell in love with you."
The words hang between us, more dangerous than any of Chen's revelations. More powerful than any weapon.
"You're lying," I whisper, but my hands have found their way to his chest, feeling his heart race beneath my palms.
"I've lied about a lot of things," he says roughly. "But never about how I feel for you. Never about?—"
Footsteps echo down the tunnel, accompanied by flashlight beams. Noah tenses, pushing me behind him as he draws his weapon.
