16. Chapter 16 (Noah)

Iwatch Olivia on the training mat, her movements becoming sharper with each repetition. Grant's facility is state-of-the-art, hidden beneath an abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn. The perfect place to prepare for what might be a suicide mission.

"Again," I command, circling her as she executes the disarm sequence. Her form is good - better than good. She learns fast, adapts faster. Almost like she was made for this life.

That thought terrifies me more than any of Chen's threats.

"You're distracted," she says, not even breathing hard as she completes the move. Sweat makes her tank top cling in ways that aren't helping my concentration. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing." But we both know it's a lie.

She drops her stance, closing the distance between us with that fearless determination I've come to love and fear. "Try again. With the truth this time."

I catch her hand before it can reach my face, using the moment to check her knuckles. They're wrapped properly, but already showing signs of wear. Like everything else about this situation, she's pushing too hard, too fast.

"You don't have to do this," I say quietly. "The infiltration, the combat training - it's not your world."

"It is now." She twists her wrist in a move I definitely didn't teach her, breaking my hold. "Because it's your world. And we promised - together."

"Olivia—"

"No." She backs up, falling into a fighting stance that's becoming disturbingly natural. "You don't get to protect me from this. Not anymore. Now come at me again, and this time don't hold back."

I close my eyes for a moment, remembering another training session, another partner who wouldn't back down. Jessica was the same way - fierce, determined, unstoppable.

Until she wasn't.

"Hey." Olivia's voice softens. "I'm not her."

My eyes snap open. "What?"

"Jessica. I'm not her." She steps closer, fearless as ever. "I know that's what you're thinking. That history's repeating itself. That you're leading another person you love into danger."

Something in my chest cracks at her words. "You can't know?—"

"I know you." Her hand finds my face, thumb tracing the scar above my eye. "I know your tells, your fears, your nightmares. And I know you're scared of losing me the same way."

"Because I could." The admission feels like glass in my throat. "One wrong move, one mistake, and you?—"

She kisses me, cutting off the dark possibilities I can't stop imagining. Her lips taste like purpose and promises and everything I don't deserve but desperately need.

"Listen to me," she says when we break apart. "I'm not walking into this blind. I'm not trusting blindly. I've seen the worst of you, remember? The lies, the manipulation, Damascus - all of it. And I'm still here."

"That's what scares me." I rest my forehead against hers, breathing in her presence. "You know everything about me and you're still willing to risk your life for this mission."

"Not for the mission." Her fingers trace patterns on my chest, right above my heart. "For you. For us. For the chance to make something right in a world that's so wrong."

The training room door slams open before I can respond. Grant strides in, tablet in hand, her expression grim.

"We have a problem," she announces, and my blood runs cold at her tone. "Marcus is making his move early. The deployment's been pushed up."

Olivia tenses beside me. "How long?"

"Twenty-four hours." Grant hands me the tablet, and my stomach drops at what I see. Satellite images of convoys moving through remote areas. Thermal scans showing underground facilities humming with activity. "They're mobilizing everything."

"We're not ready." The words escape before I can stop them. Olivia's not ready. The plan's not ready. Nothing's?—

"Yes, we are." Olivia takes the tablet, her eyes scanning the intelligence with practiced efficiency. "We just need to adjust the timeline. The infiltration point you scouted at the main facility - can we hit it tonight?"

Grant nods. "If we move fast. But it's riskier without the extra prep time."

I look between them - these two fierce, brilliant women who've somehow become my redemption and my greatest vulnerability. Everything in me screams to protect them, to find another way.

But Olivia's right. She's not Jessica. And I'm not the same man who made all those wrong choices.

"Okay," I say, already calculating angles and options. "But we do this smart. No unnecessary risks."

Olivia's smile is sharp as a blade. "Define unnecessary."

Before I can answer, Grant's phone chirps with an urgent alert. The color drains from her face as she reads it.

"What?" Olivia demands. "What's wrong?"

Grant looks up, her expression confirming my worst fears. "They found Jackson."

"What do you mean, they found Jackson?" Olivia's voice carries an edge of panic I've never heard before. "He's supposed to be in protective custody."

"He was." Grant pulls up security footage on her tablet, and my tactical mind immediately starts cataloging details. Three men in tactical gear, moving with military precision through what looks like a safe house. Jackson, being dragged from his bed. No blood, which means they want him alive.

For now.

"When?" I ask, already moving toward the weapons locker. We'll need heavy gear for what comes next.

"Seventeen minutes ago." Grant's fingers fly over her phone, coordinating response teams. "Location was compromised from the inside. Someone in my unit?—"

"Is working for Chen." I finish, the pieces clicking into place. "Just like at Randall Industries. Just like with Jessica."

Olivia grabs her gear bag, movements quick and precise. The training shows in every line of her body as she checks her equipment. "We're going after him."

It's not a question. We all know we can't leave Jackson to Chen's mercy. Not just because he's Olivia's mentor, but because he knows too much. About the operation, about our plans, about everything.

"This changes the timeline," Grant says, but she's already gearing up too. "If we move on the facility now?—"

"We have to." I check my weapons, muscle memory taking over. "Chen will expect us to prioritize Jackson. He'll think we'll delay the main operation for a rescue mission."

Understanding dawns in Olivia's eyes. "So we do both."

"No." The word comes out sharper than intended. "We stick to the plan. I'll get Jackson?—"

"Together," she reminds me firmly. "We talked about this. No more lone wolf heroics."

"This isn't heroics." I move closer, needing her to understand. "This is strategy. They'll have Jackson at a secondary location, minimal security because they're focusing on the main facility. One person has a better chance of?—"

"Of dying alone?" Her hand finds my chest, right above my heart. "Not happening. Besides, you really think I'm letting you face Chen without backup?"

"Olivia—"

"She's right," Grant interrupts. "We split the difference. My team hits the main facility as planned. You two extract Jackson. Then we converge on Chen's position once we have what we need."

The plan is tactically sound, but everything in me rebels against putting Olivia anywhere near Chen again. Not after what happened in his office. Not after seeing how far he'll go to destroy the people I love.

But when I look at her, I don't see someone who needs protection. I see a partner. A warrior. A woman who's chosen this fight with her eyes wide open.

"Okay," I concede, pulling her close for a moment. "But we do this right. No improvising."

Her laugh vibrates against my chest. "When do I ever improvise?"

"You mean besides the elevator? And the bathroom? And the?—"

"Children," Grant interrupts, but there's a hint of a smile on her face. "Focus. We have ten minutes until wheels up."

Olivia steps back, but her hand finds mine, squeezing once. A promise. A reminder. A future I'm finally letting myself believe in.

"One condition," I say, looking between them. "If anything goes wrong?—"

"Nothing will go wrong." Olivia starts to say, but Grant cuts her off.

"Let him finish."

I take a deep breath, forcing the words past the fear in my throat. "If anything goes wrong, if it looks like we're compromised, you get her out. No matter what. No matter who we lose. Olivia survives."

"Noah—"

"Promise me." I meet Grant's eyes, seeing the understanding there. She knows what it's like to make impossible choices. To sacrifice one life for many.

She nods once. "I promise."

"I hate you both," Olivia announces, but her grip on my hand tightens. "And this is a stupid plan, and we're going to have words about your martyr complex later."
