17. Chapter 17 (Olivia)
The tactical van smells like gun oil and fear as we speed through darkened streets. Noah sits beside me, methodically checking his weapons for the third time. I know what he's doing - creating order from chaos, finding control in routine. It's what he does when he's scared.
Not that he'd ever admit it.
"Five minutes to target," Grant's voice crackles through our earpieces. Her team is already in position at the main facility, waiting for our signal. Everything hinges on perfect timing.
No pressure.
I check my own gear, movements precise thanks to hours of training. The weight of the tactical vest feels almost natural now, like this life of danger and purpose has somehow become my new normal.
"Hey." Noah's hand finds mine in the darkness. "You okay?"
"Ask me again when we have Jackson back." I squeeze his fingers, drawing strength from his touch. "When we have Chen in custody. When this is finally over."
"So... tomorrow?" His attempt at lightness doesn't quite mask the tension in his voice.
"Optimistic of you to think we'll wrap this up by tomorrow."
"Realistic." He pulls me closer, his lips brushing my temple. "Because I have plans for us that don't involve firefights and corporate conspiracies."
"Mini golf?"
"Among other things."
The van takes a sharp turn, and I use the momentum as an excuse to press closer to him. We both know these might be our last quiet moments together. That everything could go horribly wrong in the next few hours.
That's why we're not saying goodbye.
"Two minutes," the driver announces. "Thermal imaging shows four hostiles on the perimeter, two more inside with the target."
Jackson. Not target. But I understand the need for tactical distance. This is a mission now, not a rescue. We can't let emotions cloud our judgment.
Even if the person we're saving is like a father to me.
"Remember the plan," Noah says as we do our final equipment check. "We go in quiet, fast, and together. No heroics."
"You mean like jumping out of burning buildings?"
"That was one time."
"Or fighting off armed guards with a tissue box?"
"That was all you, love." His smile is fierce in the dim light. "And it was incredibly hot, by the way."
Before I can respond, the van stops. This is it. The moment we've been training for.
The moment everything changes.
Noah moves first, muscle memory and years of training making him silent as a shadow. I follow his lead, remembering every lesson, every practice session, every time he pushed me to be better, faster, stronger.
The warehouse looms ahead, its abandoned exterior the perfect cover for Chen's operation. According to Grant's intel, they're holding Jackson in a subbasement - easy to defend, hard to escape.
Unless you have inside knowledge of the building's construction.
Unless you're working with someone who helped design their security protocols.
Unless you're us.
We reach the first guard point without detection. Noah signals with practiced hand movements - two hostiles ahead, standard patrol pattern. I nod, already moving into position.
The takedown is silent and efficient. All those hours of training paying off as we work in perfect sync. The guards don't even have time to radio for help before they're unconscious and zip-tied.
"East entrance clear," I whisper into my comm.
"West entrance secured," Grant's team responds. "Proceeding to phase two."
Noah takes point as we enter the building, his movements liquid smooth in the darkness. I watch his back, covering our rear approach just like we practiced. Just like we promised.
Together.
The first sign something's wrong is the silence. No radio chatter from the interior guards. No sounds of movement from where the thermal imaging showed activity.
Just empty halls and shadow.
"Noah," I breathe, but he's already tensing, already sensing it too.
"Trap," he mouths, and my blood runs cold.
Because of course it's a trap. It's always been a trap, from that first night in my apartment to this moment. Chen's been playing us, manipulating us, pushing us exactly where he wants us.
But this time, we're ready.
This time, we have a trap of our own.
A scream echoes from below - Jackson's voice, filled with pain and fear. Every instinct screams at me to run to him, to save him, to end this now.
We descend into the subbasement like ghosts, each step measured and silent. Noah's presence at my back feels like armor, like strength, like everything we've built together.
Another scream tears through the silence, closer now. I feel Noah tense beside me, his hand finding mine in the darkness. One squeeze. Our signal.
Show time.
"Please," Jackson's voice echoes from behind a heavy steel door. "I don't know anything else!"
"Oh, but you do." Chen's smooth tones make my skin crawl. "You know exactly where they'll come for you. Exactly how they'll try to save you. Because that's what heroes do, isn't it? They come running when their loved ones scream."
I step into the doorway, weapon raised. "Actually, we're already here."
The scene freezes like a tableau - Jackson strapped to a chair, blood trickling from his split lip. Chen standing over him, so focused on his manipulation that he doesn't notice the red dot of my laser sight dancing on his chest.
"Ms. Blackwood." His smile doesn't waver, even as his men raise their weapons. "Right on schedule."
"You mean your schedule?" Noah materializes from the shadows like an avenging angel, his own weapon trained on Chen's head. "The one where you lure us in with an obvious trap?"
"Obvious?" Chen laughs softly. "Perhaps. But effective nonetheless. After all, here you are."
"Here we are," I agree, moving further into the room. "Along with Detective Grant's tactical team, who are currently seizing your main facility. And the FBI strike force surrounding this building. And the live news crews broadcasting everything."
For the first time, uncertainty flickers across Chen's face.
"You're lying."
"Check your phone," Noah suggests. "Oh wait, you can't. Because the signal jammers we installed are blocking everything except our secure channel. The same channel that's currently broadcasting this conversation to every law enforcement agency in the city."
Chen's smile finally falters. "You really think?—"
"That we'd walk into an obvious trap without a plan?" I cut him off, enjoying the way his composure cracks. "That we'd risk everything without backup? Without failsafes?"
"You've taught us well," Noah adds, his voice carrying echoes of Damascus, of Jessica, of every lesson Chen forced him to learn. "Maybe too well."
Movement from the corners catches my eye - Chen's men shifting, uncertain. They can feel the tide turning, the power dynamic shifting.
"Stand down," I tell them. "You're surrounded, outgunned, and about to be on the wrong side of history. Make the smart choice."
One guard lowers his weapon. Then another. Chen's empire crumbling in real time as his soldiers choose survival over loyalty.
"You fools," Chen snarls, his grandfatherly mask finally shattering completely. "You have no idea what you're interrupting. The work we're doing here?—"
"Is over." Grant's voice cuts through our comms as her team breaches the upper levels. "The facility is secure. We have everything."
"Including Marcus," Noah adds, and I see the last of Chen's control vanish. "He's singing like a bird, by the way. Something about not wanting to go down alone."
Everything happens at once then - Chen lunges for Jackson, a hidden blade appearing in his hand. Noah moves faster, his bullet catching Chen's shoulder before he can strike. I'm already running to Jackson, cutting his restraints as Grant's team storms the room.
"Took you long enough," Jackson mumbles through bloody lips, but his eyes shine with pride.
"Had to make an entrance." I help him stand, supporting his weight as Noah secures Chen. "You okay?"
"Been better." He squeezes my hand weakly. "Did you get it? The evidence?"
I look at Chen, now being cuffed and read his rights. At his men, surrendering to Grant's team. At Noah, who meets my eyes across the chaos with a smile that carries all our promises.
"We got everything," I tell Jackson. "It's over."
But Chen's laugh, sharp and bitter, cuts through the moment.
"Over?" Blood stains his perfect suit as they lead him away. "My dear children, this is just the beginning. Did you really think I wouldn't have contingencies? Failsafes? People in place who will carry on my work?"
"Let them try," Noah says, coming to stand beside me.
