18. Chapter 18 (Noah)
The safe room in Grant's facility hums with activity as Olivia works, her fingers flying over the keyboard like she's racing against time. In a way, she is. We all are. Chen's words about contingencies and failsafes have been echoing in my head for hours, making sleep impossible.
Not that I could sleep anyway. Not with everything we're about to unleash.
"Stop hovering," Olivia says without looking up from her screen. "You're making me nervous."
"I don't hover." But I force myself to sit, taking the chair beside her. Lines of code reflect in her glasses as she works, turning the story of our investigation into digital armor. "How much longer?"
"Almost done encrypting the files. Once they're uploaded to the secure server, Grant's team can—" She stops suddenly, frowning at her screen. "That's weird."
My body tenses. "What's weird?"
"This code sequence. It's not mine." Her fingers move faster, pulling up windows I can barely follow. "Someone's trying to?—"
The screens go black.
"No, no, no." Olivia's typing becomes frantic as red text begins scrolling across the darkness. "They're in the system. How are they in the system?"
I'm already moving, muscle memory taking over as I unplug her laptop from the network. But it's too late. Whatever virus they've unleashed is already spreading, corrupting files, erasing evidence.
Erasing everything we've fought for.
"Grant!" I shout toward the command center. "We need the backup drives. Now!"
But Olivia's already shaking her head. "They're targeting the backups too. All of them. Simultaneously." Her voice carries an edge of panic I've never heard before. "This isn't possible. The security protocols?—"
"Were designed by Chen's people." I pull out my phone, but the signal is dead. "Just like everything else in this mess."
"Not everything." She looks at me then, and I see the same fierce determination that made me fall in love with her in the first place. "They can't hack what they can't find."
Understanding dawns. "The dead man's switch."
She nods, already pulling a small USB drive from around her neck. The one we created after the building explosion, containing copies of everything. The one no one knows about except us.
And Marcus Randall.
"Call him," I say, already dreading what comes next. "We need his access codes to?—"
The laptop screen flickers to life, but instead of code, we're looking at a live video feed. Marcus Randall stares back at us, his expression grim.
"I was wondering when you'd figure it out," he says, and my blood runs cold at his tone.
Olivia moves closer to the screen. "Marcus? What's happening? We need the access codes to?—"
"I'm sorry, Olivia." His voice carries genuine regret. "But I can't let you release those files."
"What?" She grabs the laptop like she can reach through the screen and shake him. "You're the one who gave us the evidence! You helped us take down Chen!"
"I helped you take down a liability." Marcus adjusts his tie - a nervous tell I remember from my days working security for him. "Chen was becoming unstable. Drawing too much attention. The board required... adjustments."
The truth hits like a bullet. "You're not just working with Chen," I say quietly. "You're his boss."
Marcus smiles, and for the first time I see past his carefully crafted image of the reluctant whistleblower. See the monster hiding behind corporate suits and plausible deniability.
"Very good, Noah." He sounds almost proud. "I always said you were the smartest of my security team. Well, except for that unfortunate business with Jessica."
Olivia's hand finds mine under the desk, squeezing once. Grounding me before the memories can pull me under.
"Why?" she demands. "Why help us gather evidence just to destroy it?"
"Because I needed to know how much you really had. How close you were getting." Marcus leans back in his chair - the same one where Chen sat while ordering Jessica's death. "And now I know. So I'm offering you both a choice."
"Not interested," I growl, but he continues as if I haven't spoken.
"Walk away. Leave the country. Start new lives with new identities and enough money to never worry again." His smile turns sharp. "Or stay and fight, and watch everything you love burn. Just like Damascus. Just like Jessica."
The screens go dark again, leaving us in silence broken only by the sound of files being systematically destroyed.
Olivia turns to me, her eyes fierce in the dim light. "Tell me you have a plan."
I pull her close, breathing in her strength, her determination, her unwavering faith in us.
"Better," I say. "I have you."
"We need to move," I say, already gathering our essential gear. "If Marcus is really running things?—"
"Then this facility isn't secure." Olivia unplugs her laptop, shoving it into her bag along with the USB drive. "None of Grant's locations are."
As if confirming our fears, alarms begin blaring throughout the building. Red emergency lights cast everything in blood-colored shadows as Grant bursts into the room.
"We're compromised," she announces, though we've already figured that out. "All systems are down. Communications, security, everything."
"Marcus," Olivia explains quickly. "He's been playing us from the start."
Understanding dawns in Grant's eyes. "The intel about Chen, the evidence drops, the convenient timing of everything?—"
"Was him manipulating us exactly where he wanted us." I check my weapons, muscle memory taking over as I plan escape routes. "Using us to eliminate Chen while keeping himself clean."
"Not completely clean." Olivia's voice carries that tone I've learned to both love and fear - the one that means she's about to do something either brilliant or insane. Usually both. "He forgot something important."
"What's that?"
She pulls out her phone - the burner one we keep for emergencies, not connected to any network. "I'm not the only reporter who's been investigating him."
Understanding hits me like a physical blow. "Cassandra."
"Who do you think gave me those first documents about Project Oracle?" Her fingers fly over the keypad, sending a message I can't quite see. "She's been building her own case, completely separate from ours. Through different channels, different sources."
"A backup story." Grant sounds impressed despite everything. "In case yours got compromised."
"In case exactly this happened." Olivia looks up at me, and I see the weight of what we're about to do in her eyes. "But we need to get to her before Marcus realizes?—"
The windows explode inward as rappel lines drop from above. Tactical teams in full gear swing in, weapons raised.
"Down!" I grab Olivia and Grant, pulling them behind a desk as gunfire erupts. Training kicks in as I return fire, buying them time to reach the secondary exit.
"Go!" I shout over the chaos. "Get to Cassandra! I'll hold them?—"
"If you say you'll hold them off, I swear to god—" Olivia's threat is cut off by another explosion, this one from the hallway. More of Marcus's men pouring in.
We're surrounded.
"Options?" Grant asks, her own weapon ready as she covers our flank.
I look at Olivia - this brilliant, stubborn woman who's turned my whole world upside down. Who's given me a reason to fight beyond redemption or revenge.
Who's watching me with eyes that say she knows exactly what I'm thinking.
"Together," she reminds me firmly. "We promised."
"Together," I agree, already reaching for the flashbangs on my belt. "But we do this smart. Grant, can your team create a diversion at the main entrance?"
She's already on her radio, coordinating with whatever forces remain loyal. "Five minutes."
"We only need three." I pull Olivia close, memorizing her face in case this all goes wrong. "Ready to improvise?"
Her smile is fierce and beautiful and everything I'm fighting for. "With you? Always."
The next few minutes are chaos and gunfire and perfectly synchronized violence. We move like we've been fighting together for years instead of weeks, covering each other's blind spots, anticipating each other's moves.
When we finally break through to the garage level, we're bloody but alive. Grant's team has drawn off most of the hostile forces, giving us a clear path to the emergency vehicle we stashed here for exactly this scenario.
"Now what?" Olivia asks as I drive us through back alleys, taking every evasive maneuver I know.
"Now we get to Cassandra." I check the mirrors, confirming we're not followed. "Get her evidence before Marcus can bury it. End this once and for all."
"And if he's waiting for us?"
"He definitely is." I reach for her hand, needing her touch to ground me. "But he doesn't know what we know."
"Which is?"
I smile, thinking of all the choices that led us here. All the ways love can be both weakness and strength.
"That together, we're unstoppable."
Her phone buzzes - a message from Cassandra confirming she's safe at the arranged meeting point. One step closer to ending this.
One step closer to whatever future we can build from the ashes of our past.
"Ready?" I ask, though I already know the answer.
Olivia squeezes my hand.
