19. Chapter 19 (Olivia)
Or any sign of Marcus's people.
"Clear outside," Noah says through my earpiece. "But we're exposed here. Too many entry points."
"We don't have a choice." I check my phone again - still no signal, thanks to whatever Marcus did to the networks. "Cassandra has the only copy of her evidence. We need it before?—"
Movement catches my eye. A familiar yellow dress weaving through late-night customers.
"She's here."
Noah materializes beside me like a shadow, his body subtly positioning between me and potential threats. Even now, even after everything we've been through together, his first instinct is to protect.
Cassandra spots us and changes course, heading for the bathroom instead of our table. Smart girl. I taught her well.
"Cover me," I tell Noah, already moving to follow her.
His hand catches mine for just a moment. "Be careful."
"Always." I squeeze his fingers once, then let go.
The bathroom is empty except for Cassandra, who's checking the stalls with practiced efficiency. The moment she sees me, she launches herself into my arms.
"You absolute idiot," she says into my shoulder. "I thought you were dead when the networks went down."
"Can't get rid of me that easily." I hug her back just as fiercely, then pull away to business. "You have it?"
She pats her oversized purse. "Everything. Every dirty deal, every illegal shipment, every connection between Marcus and the board. Three years of investigating while you were chasing Chen's trail."
"You beautiful genius." I could kiss her. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"Because I knew you'd try to protect me." Her smile is sharp. "Just like someone else we know who's probably wearing out the floor pacing outside."
As if on cue, Noah's voice comes through my earpiece: "Company. Black SUV, tinted windows. Professional formation."
My heart rate spikes. "How many?"
"At least six. More probably watching the back. We need to move. Now."
Cassandra's already pulling a USB drive from her bag. "I uploaded everything to a secure server, but they'll find it eventually. This is the only offline copy."
"The evidence about Marcus?—"
"And the board, and Project Oracle, and about a dozen other operations we didn't even know existed." She presses the drive into my hand. "It's all here. Everything we need to burn them to the ground."
The bathroom door crashes open before I can respond. Two men in tactical gear burst in, weapons raised.
But we're already moving.
The self-defense training Noah drilled into me becomes instinct as I strike the first man's throat, using his own momentum to slam him into the wall. Beside me, Cassandra proves she's been doing more than just investigative work these past three years.
"Nice form," I comment as her attacker hits the ground.
"Krav Maga." She grabs her bag. "Tuesday nights. You should come sometime. If we survive this."
More shouts from the diner. Gunfire. The sound of breaking glass.
"Noah?" I call into my comm.
"Little busy!" The strain in his voice makes my chest tight. "Get to the secondary exit. I'll?—"
"If you say you'll hold them off, I swear to god?—"
"Just move!"
Cassandra and I run for the back door, but more of Marcus's men are waiting. They're good - professional grade with military training.
But I'm better.
Because I've had the best teacher.
The fight is brutal and efficient, just like Noah taught me. No wasted movements, no hesitation. These men want to kill us, want to bury the truth we've worked so hard to uncover.
I won't let them.
A bullet grazes my arm as we break through to the alley. Pain flares, hot and sharp, but adrenaline keeps me moving. Cassandra covers our retreat with surprising skill while I tap my emergency beacon - the one connected directly to Grant's personal channel.
"Get to the car," I tell Cassandra, already turning back. "I need to?—"
"Get Noah. I know." She squeezes my arm. "Go. I've got your back."
I run back into chaos, into gunfire and breaking glass and everything I once thought I'd never be brave enough to face.
But that was before.
Before Noah.
Before us.
Before I learned that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is trust someone else to fight beside you instead of for you.
I find him in the middle of the diner, holding his own against three attackers. Blood trickles from a cut above his eye, but his movements are still liquid smooth, still deadly efficient.
Still beautiful, in that terrible way that makes my heart ache.
We move like we've been fighting together our whole lives. Each strike, each block, each moment of perfect synchronization feels like a dance we've practiced forever. Noah takes the lead while I flank, and the way our bodies flowing around each other in lethal harmony.
The remaining attackers don't stand a chance.
"Clear!" I call as the last one drops. Through the broken windows, I see Cassandra giving us a thumbs up from the getaway car.
"Time to go," Noah says, already moving toward the exit. But something in his voice makes me pause.
"You're hurt."
"I'm fine." But he's favoring his left side, and there's too much blood on his shirt for all of it to be someone else's.
"Noah—"
"Later." He grabs my hand, pulling me toward safety. "We need to move before their backup arrives."
As if summoned by his words, more black SUVs screech into the parking lot. The night erupts with gunfire as Grant's tactical team finally shows up, providing us the cover we need to reach the car.
"Drive!" I shout as we dive into the backseat. Cassandra floors it, proving yet another hidden talent as she executes a perfect escape maneuver.
"The evidence?" Noah asks, his breathing too shallow for my liking.
I pull out the USB drive, holding it up like a trophy. "Everything we need. Everything Marcus tried to bury."
"Speaking of burying things," Cassandra calls from the front seat, "check your email."
My phone finally has signal, and she's right - there's a new message waiting. From the New York Times.
"They want me," I whisper, reading the offer. "Senior investigative correspondent. Full resources, complete editorial control, international bureau?—"
"Take it." Noah's voice is soft but firm against my hair.
"What?" I turn in his arms, careful of his injured side but needing to see his face. Blood seeps through his shirt where he took that hit for me, and my fingers itch to touch, to heal, to claim.
"Noah, this position means international assignments. Months away. We'd barely?—"
"We'd make it work." His hand cups my face, thumb brushing away dirt or tears or both. "Because it's your dream. Because you deserve everything." His voice drops lower, just for me. "Because I love you enough to follow you anywhere."
"But Grant's team?—"
"Can operate globally." He smiles that rare real smile, the one that still makes my heart stutter. "Besides, someone needs to keep you alive in all those dangerous places. Might as well be the man who's already failed at staying professional with his client."
I lean into his touch, breathing in gunpowder and blood and him. "Failed spectacularly."
"Completely." His lips brush my temple, my cheek, hovering just shy of my mouth. "And I'd do it again."
The kiss tastes like adrenaline and promise, fierce and tender all at once. His arms tighten around me as sirens wail closer, as more shots ring out, as the world tries to tear us apart again.
Let it try.
Sirens wail behind us as Grant's team engages Marcus's forces. Through the rear window, I see flashing lights and tactical vehicles converging on the diner. The evidence in my hand feels like it's burning with possibility - both for justice and for whatever future we choose to build.
"First," I say, leaning into his touch, "we finish this. We take down Marcus and the board. We make sure Chen's network is completely dismantled."
"Agreed."
"Then we get you to a hospital because you're definitely bleeding more than you're admitting."
His laugh turns into a wince. "Also agreed."
"And then..." I pull out my phone, the job offer glowing on the screen like a promise. "Then we figure out what's next. Together."
"Together," he echoes, and I hear all our promises in that one word. All our fears and hopes and possibilities.
"If you two are done being disgustingly in love," Cassandra interrupts from the front seat, "we've got company. The professional kind."
More black SUVs appear in our mirrors, their drivers clearly trained in pursuit tactics. Noah tenses beside me, already reaching for his weapon.
But I'm not worried.
Because we have the evidence.
Because we have each other.
