Epilogue

ONE YEAR LATER

The New York Times newsroom buzzes with familiar energy as I put the finishing touches on my latest story.

My desk faces the Manhattan skyline - a view I never thought I'd have when I was chasing leads from my old cubicle.

The Pulitzer certificate on my wall still feels surreal, even six months after the ceremony.

The Marcus Randall investigation changed everything.

Not just for me and Noah, but for the whole landscape of corporate accountability.

The evidence Cassandra and I uncovered led to over thirty high-level arrests, billions in seized assets, and a complete restructuring of oversight for private military contractors.

Chen died in prison three months ago. Heart attack, they said, though Noah has his theories about certain board members tying up loose ends. Marcus is still awaiting trial, his empire dismantled piece by piece as more whistleblowers come forward.

My phone buzzes with a message from Noah: "Package secured. Heading home. Dinner?"

Home. The word still gives me butterflies. Our apartment overlooking Central Park is nothing like the safe houses and tactical facilities where we fell in love, but it feels right. Like everything we fought for, everything we sacrificed, led us here.

Grant promoted him to head of her special operations division, though he still insists on personally handling my security when I travel for dangerous stories.

Old habits die hard, I suppose. Not that I'm complaining - having a highly trained operative who loves you watching your back comes in handy in our line of work.

"Got plans tonight?" Cassandra appears at my desk, looking suspiciously innocent. She transferred to the Times' investigative unit three months ago, her experience with the Randall case making her one of the most sought-after journalists in the country.

"Just dinner with Noah. Why?"

Her grin widens. "Because Jackson's throwing us a surprise party at his place. Don't tell him I warned you."

I laugh, remembering how far we've all come.

Jackson recovered fully from his injuries, though he claims the titanium plate in his jaw gives him special weather-predicting abilities now.

He retired from daily editing to write books about corporate corruption, but he still mentors young journalists. Still keeps us all honest.

"What's the occasion?" I ask, though I already know.

"One year since the story broke. Since we took them down." She perches on my desk, examining my latest draft. "Hard to believe sometimes, isn't it? That we actually did it?"

"That we survived it, you mean?"

"That too." She touches the scar on my arm - a souvenir from that night at the diner. "Though I still say you two are crazy for going back into the field so soon."

She's referring to the assignment Noah and I just completed - exposing a human trafficking ring operating through diplomatic channels. Three weeks undercover, posing as wealthy clients while gathering evidence. Just like old times, except now we're a well-oiled machine. Partners in every sense.

"Speaking of crazy," I close my laptop, gathering my things, "how's the wedding planning going?"

Cassandra groans. Her engagement to Sarah Grant surprised exactly no one who saw them working together during the Randall investigation. "Don't ask. If I have to look at one more flower arrangement, I'm eloping."

"No, you're not. Noah's too excited about being best man."

"He just wants an excuse to wear his tactical gear to a formal event."

"That too."

We head out together, the summer evening painting everything golden. New York feels different now - safer, maybe, though I know that's an illusion. There are always more stories to chase, more corruption to expose, more fights worth fighting.

But now I have a partner who understands that drive. Who doesn't try to protect me from danger, but stands beside me as we face it together.

Noah's waiting outside our building, freshly showered and changed from whatever op he ran today. The sight of him still makes my heart race - not just because he's gorgeous, but because of everything he represents. Trust. Partnership. A love worth risking everything for.

"Ready for Jackson's not-so-surprise party?" he asks, pulling me close.

"Cassandra told you too?"

"Grant, actually. Terrible at keeping secrets for a spy."

We walk to Jackson's place, enjoying the simple pleasure of being together without gunfire or explosions. Noah's hand finds mine, our fingers intertwining with practiced ease.

"I have something for you," he says as we near Jackson's building. "Was going to wait until the party, but..."

He pulls out a small box, and my heart stops. But when I open it, I find a key.

"What's this for?"

His smile carries echoes of that first night, when he was just my unwanted protector and I was just another assignment. "Got the cabin back. Rebuilt it exactly like before, but with better security. Thought we could use a weekend place. Somewhere to decompress between assignments."

Tears sting my eyes as I remember everything that happened there. Our first real connection. Our first real fight. The moment I started falling for him, despite all my walls and his secrets.

"Together?" I ask, echoing all our promises.

He kisses me then, soft and sure and full of possibility. "Always."

We're late to the party, but no one seems to mind. Our family is all here - Jackson telling war stories to eager young reporters, Grant and Cassandra arguing about seating arrangements, colleagues and sources who became friends through shared battles.

Noah pulls me onto the balcony as fireworks start downtown, celebrating something else entirely but feeling perfectly timed for us.

"Happy anniversary," he murmurs against my hair.

"Which one? The night we met? The cabin? The diner? The time you saved me from that arms dealer in Morocco?"

"All of them." His arms tighten around me. "Every moment that led us here."

I turn in his embrace, seeing our whole story reflected in his eyes. The scars we both carry, the victories we've shared, the future we're building together.

"Think we'll ever have a normal life?" I ask, though I already know the answer.

"God, I hope not." He grins, that fierce expression that still makes my heart race. "Normal's overrated. I'll take extraordinary with you any day."

Inside, our friends are toasting to justice and truth and love that survives against all odds. But out here, wrapped in Noah's arms with the city spread out below us, I realize something important:

Some stories don't end. They just evolve, growing deeper and richer with each chapter. Each challenge faced together makes us stronger. Each battle fought side by side brings us closer.

And our story? It's just beginning.

"Love you," I whisper against his lips.

The End.

It’s a book about… “I’m falling for my student, the temptation might destroy us both.

I had one wild night with a stunning woman...

Waking up beside Eliza Monroe was electrifying—but realizing she’s my star student at my university? Unthinkable. That should have ended it there.

Smart, stunning, and fiercely off-limits. I should resist her, yet every charged debate and stolen glance draws me deeper into the fire.

I can’t get her out of my head, no matter how wrong it is. She challenges me, defies me, and matches my intensity in ways I never thought possible.

The chemistry between us is undeniable, its electric, our passion grows whenever together. She’s young enough to be my daughter, yet I’m addicted to this cat and mouse game.

I’ve deeply fallen for her but the whispers around campus are making the stakes higher.

If our affair is exposed our futures could be completely ruined.”
