Chapter 14, Thorne

The world snapped back into focus with the force of a physical blow.

One moment, he was a wolf, his mind a maelstrom of nightmare and instinct, the taste of her skin on his tongue.

The next, he was a man, kneeling on the cold floorboards, his human body screaming with the aftershocks of a forced shift.

He was naked, vulnerable, and the raw, primal fear from the dream still clung to him like a shroud.

Ronan’s snarling face, Aria’s terrified screams, the scent of burning forest—it was all still there, a toxic echo in his mind. He had almost lost her. The dream had been so real, the possibility so agonizing, that his wolf had reacted with pure, unadulterated panic.

And then he saw her. She was pressed against the headboard, her auburn hair a wild halo around her face, her green-gold eyes wide with a mixture of shock and… something else. Not terror. Not the fear he expected. It was something softer, something that looked unnervingly like concern.

The sight of her, real and solid and unharmed, shattered what little control he had left.

The nightmare’s fear didn’t vanish; it transmuted.

It morphed into a desperate, clawing need.

He didn’t want to hurt her. God, he never wanted to hurt her.

But he had to touch her, to feel her, to bury himself so deep inside her that the phantom scent of Ronan would be obliterated forever.

He had to reassure the howling beast in his soul that she was his. That she was safe. That she was real.

He didn’t think. He only acted. He pounced, a blur of motion that crossed the distance between them in a heartbeat.

He was on her, his body pinning hers to the mattress, his lips crashing down on hers.

It wasn’t a kiss; it was a brand. It was a desperate, hungry claiming, a fusion of teeth and tongue that was meant to devour and possess.

He expected her to scream, to fight, to beat her fists against his chest in terror.

He expected her to recoil from the wild, untamed energy he knew was pouring off him in waves.

But she didn’t. She gasped into his mouth, her body tensing for a split second, and then…

she opened to him. Her lips parted, her tongue met his not with resistance, but with a hesitant, answering fire.

Her hands, which he had expected to push him away, came up to tangle in his hair, her fingers gripping the strands, pulling him closer.

It was the last straw. The fragile thread of his control snapped.

A guttural groan tore from his throat as his hands roamed her body, his touch rough and demanding.

He tore the blanket away, his hands finding her breasts, his thumbs brushing over the hardened peaks.

He wasn’t gentle. He couldn’t be. The wolf was still too close to the surface, its need too raw, too primal.

He kneaded her flesh, his mouth moving from her lips to her neck, his teeth scraping against her pulse point, not to break the skin, but to mark her, to leave his scent on her.

He positioned himself between her legs, his erection a heavy, demanding pressure against her core.

He could feel her heat, her wetness, and it was a siren’s call to his fractured senses.

He looked down at her, his vision blurring at the edges, the world narrowing down to the sight of her face, her eyes half-lidded with a desire that mirrored his own.

“Thorne,” she breathed, his name a prayer on her lips.

That was it. That was his undoing. He drove into her, hard and deep, burying himself to the hilt in one swift, possessive stroke.

The feeling was overwhelming, a lightning bolt of pure sensation that shot through his entire system.

It was more than pleasure. It was homecoming.

It was absolution. It was the violent, exquisite proof that she was here, she was his, and Ronan could never have her.

He lost all semblance of rhythm or reason.

It was a primal, intense claiming, a frantic, desperate mating that was as much about exorcising his demons as it was about physical release.

He drove into her again and again, his hips pistoning, his body a taut bowstring of need.

The sounds that filled the room were animalistic—his harsh grunts, her soft cries, the rhythmic slap of skin against skin.

He held her wrists above her head with one hand, his grip tight enough to bruise, his other hand gripping her hip, anchoring her to him.

She met his every thrust, her body arching up to meet his, her legs wrapping around his waist, pulling him deeper.

She wasn’t just accepting his possession; she was participating in it, her nails raking down his back, her cries of pleasure spurring him on.

The fire in him, the one born of nightmare and fear, was met by a fire in her, and the conflagration threatened to consume them both.

He felt the pressure building at the base of his spine, the familiar tightening of his balls, the coiling of a tension so intense it was almost painful.

He wanted to draw it out, to savor this feeling of being completely, utterly lost in her, but his body betrayed him.

The need to claim, to mark, to own her in the most fundamental way possible, was too strong.

He looked down at her, at the sweat beading on her brow, at the way her breasts bounced with his every thrust.

He shifted his angle, grinding against her, and she cried out, her inner walls clamping down on him as her orgasm ripped through her.

The feeling of her pulsing around him, the sight of her face contorted in ecstasy, was the final push.

He came with a roar that was half-human, half-wolf, his body shuddering with the force of his release.

He poured himself into her, his seed hot and thick, his entire being focused on this one act of possession.

It was an orgasm so intense it was almost painful, leaving him trembling and spent, his muscles screaming in protest.

He collapsed on top of her, his weight crushing her into the mattress, his face buried in the crook of her neck.

He was gasping for air, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

For a long moment, the only sound in the room was their ragged breathing, the frantic thumping of their hearts slowly beginning to calm.

The lingering fear from the nightmare was gone, obliterated by the force of their joining.

In its place was a profound, bone-deep peace.

He was still shaking, but it wasn’t from fear or adrenaline.

It was from the sheer, overwhelming intensity of what had just happened.

He had lost control. He had been rough, almost brutal.

And she had taken all of it, and given it back to him tenfold.

He slowly rolled off her, pulling her into his arms, draping her limp body across his chest.

He could feel the frantic beat of her heart against his own, a steady, reassuring rhythm that anchored him to reality.

He stroked her hair, his hand still trembling slightly, and pressed a soft, reverent kiss to her forehead.

He didn’t speak. He couldn’t. There were no words for what he felt, for the depth of his possession, for the soul-shattering relief of having her in his arms. He just held her, his mate, his anchor, the one thing in his chaotic world that was real.
