Chapter 20

CHAPTER TWENTY

Foster wanted some action. They’d been sitting on their butts for days, just waiting for something to happen. The information Pen had given them was being questioned since nothing had happened in any of the three areas she’d brought up. All the terrorists’ activity they’d been watching had slowed.

Foster wanted to believe Pen had given them good information. What she’d told them about Kaya hadn’t been coerced out of her because they hadn’t interrogated her, scaring her into giving them what they wanted to hear. She believed what she’d told them, and that made him believe her.

He’d taken a long nap during the day and had just finished eating when Wave came over. “Hey, man, did you sleep?”

Wave nodded. “Some people are tired of hanging out here. There’s talk of standing down and going back to our bases.”

“It has only been a few days.”

“Yeah, they aren’t sure the information Pen gave us is good. So they are thinking of pulling us back.”

“What makes them think it isn’t good?”

“Apparently someone looked deeper and decided that we weren’t seeing signs of terrorist activity ramping up.”

The rest of the guys came over and sat at the table. Jump and Cy had just grabbed food and dug in.

“What do you all think?” Foster asked.

Bang sat back and laced his fingers behind his head. “There’s a reason we believed her. I think she knows what she’s talking about.”

T nodded. “She may have been through a lot, but she believes what she said. That makes me think it’s true.”

“I think it’s real. I think whatever information she gave us we can rely on. Maybe the terrorists know we deployed over here and they are hesitant to act.”

Wave sat back with a thoughtful look on his face. “I don’t think we should leave yet. Maybe we should head out and nose around.”

T slowly nodded. “That’s a good idea. I think we should find out if anything is popping.”

“I like that idea,” Jump said.

Wave shot Bang a questioning look. “Bang isn’t scruffy enough.”

Bang rolled his eyes. “Sorry, I had to shave.”

“Well, that just means that you might be staying behind,” Wave said. “Groups of two, and we’ll pull in Kevlar’s team. We’ll head out at nine.”

Kevlar came up from behind. “What are we doing?”

“I think we should head out and see what we can drum up,” Wave said.

Kevlar’s chin dipped. “Sounds good. Nine?”

“Yeah. Bang is too clean looking. He looks military.”

Kevlar whistled. “He cleans up well. Too bad we need messy.”

Bang snorted. “Dammit, I want to go out, too.”

“You can go with Flash,” Kevlar said.

“Awesome.”

Wave stood. “Get some rest and get ready to go out. Look like locals.”

They broke up, Foster headed out to change clothes. They needed to find something to go on. It had been a while since he’d done something like this. He enjoyed playing a part and finding out information.

They would go light so they didn’t attract attention with their weapons. The last thing they needed was the attention of anyone who wanted to do some harm.

He found clothes to wear then stretched out to rest before they headed out. When they assembled, he found out that he was paired with Safe. They were headed to a club not too far away.

After checking his piece, he moved to where Safe was getting ready. “You ready to go?”

“Almost. Just need to check my ammunition. I think I have enough. Just don’t want it to be too bulky.”

“Sure, when you’re ready, I’m ready.”

Five minutes later, they headed out. The club was close, and they were there in about twenty minutes.

They were able to get in with their guns because they had them in ankle holsters and the security didn’t seem to care who brought in what.

It was good for them but made him think the safety of club goers might not be what they thought it was.

The club wasn’t packed, but thankfully he and Safe didn’t stand out. They grabbed drinks but didn’t consume any of the alcohol. They’d been there for almost two hours, and he thought it was a washout, when a new group came in.

Foster moved close enough he could hear the group, taking a seat facing away from them. Safe sat at the table, pretending to drink his beer.

The group started talking, in a mix of English and Italian. He picked up a few words, realizing they were planning on something nefarious.

Listening to them plan their attack was kind of surreal. He’d expected to follow someone and see where their base of operation was, not get a full play-by-play of the attack they had planned.

After about twenty minutes, Safe met his gaze. They both nodded. They would follow these guys once they left the club.

The group left about five minutes later, splitting up at a corner down the street. They agreed to follow the guy in the green shirt. He was with another man, and they headed toward the city center. There were plenty of other people around them, so they were able to blend in with the crowd.

Safe sent a quick text, informing everyone what they’d heard. They agreed to meet up in thirty minutes in a parking garage.

The guy they were following entered a building that looked like flats. He and Safe turned down a side street and circled back to the street and set up a small camera with a battery and cell service to record the entryway before they headed to the parking garage where they were planning to meet up.

Safe glanced around then moved close enough to speak softly. “Can you believe it?”

“Right? I think we found what we were looking for.”

“Is this a group we know anything about?”

“No, I don’t think so. I didn’t recognize any of them, and that address isn’t one we have tagged for activity.”

They met up with the rest of the guys deep at the back of the parking structure on the third floor where few cars were parked.

“We were about to give up when the group came into the bar,” Safe said.

“Are you sure they are planning an attack?” Kevlar asked.

Foster nodded. “Absolutely. We have the address of one of the guys. We can start following him. We set up a camera. I’ve been watching the feed when we get motion. He hasn’t left yet.”

“I’m not tired, I’ll take first watch,” Cy said.

“I’ll stay with Cy,” T said.

Kevlar nodded. “We’ll divide up the watches and get a van over here that will blend in.”

“I’ll call the commander and see what we can get tonight,” Wave said before walking away.

Foster couldn’t believe their luck that they’d stumbled up on the group planning the attack. He guessed they thought they were safe meeting in public and talking about an attack.

Now they just had to wait and catch them in the act. They were operating in Italy and would have to bring the Italian authorities in, eventually. It would be tricky, but hopefully the authorities would believe them, and detain the terrorists before they could do any real damage.
