Chapter 5 The Basement Boxes and Growing Curves
The two of them—still mostly teenagers in their own heads—started back down the stairs.
Neither noticed the change under their feet at first. The rough, unfinished wooden steps that had always scraped their bare soles were gone.
In their place was a smooth, tannish carpet, soft and new, the kind that belonged in a finished family home instead of a gaming basement.
It muffled their footsteps as they descended.
At the bottom the lights were off.
Both of them stopped. They hadn’t touched the switches when they bolted upstairs. The darkness felt deliberate.
Kai reached to the right wall on pure muscle memory, fingers finding the familiar panel. He flipped both switches. Bright overhead lights snapped on. Their eyes adjusted in a couple of blinks—and the entire basement had rewritten itself.
The dual battlestations were gone. The monitors, the RGB, the tangled cables, the matching chairs—all of it vanished. In their place stood neat stacks of cardboard boxes, some open, some still sealed, sitting exactly where the desks used to be.
Kai’s new voice cracked high with panic. “Wh-what the fuck? Where’s our stuff? Where the fuck’s our computers?”
He hobbled forward on his still-sore knee, long chestnut hair swinging into his face with every uneven step. He shoved it back and started yanking open the nearest box.
Cole let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “What’s in the box?”
The line left his mouth automatically. Then his brain supplied the exact movie it came from—clear, complete, adult knowledge instead of the half-remembered meme it used to be. The shift felt invasive, like someone had quietly overwritten a corner of his memory.
Kai’s head snapped up from the box he was digging through. “Cole, this isn’t the time for your stupid movie references! This is… fucked! Our computers are fucking gone and instead it’s boxes full of… clothes?!”
He held up a soft, folded blouse for half a second before dropping it like it burned. The same movie title had just arrived in his own head, fully formed and unwanted.
Cole crossed the basement in a few long strides—his new height eating the distance too easily—and stopped beside Kai.
Kai kept having to push the growing length of brown hair out of his eyes every few seconds while he rifled through another box.
Soft fabrics whispered under his fingers: leggings, oversized sweaters, things that had no business existing in their space.
Cole opened a different box. Inside were knick-knacks and household objects he somehow recognized as the kind of things that belonged in a finished adult home—framed photos that weren’t of them, a ceramic bowl, a folded throw blanket. The domesticity of it made his stomach turn.
Kai had gone still. When he turned, his eyes were wet. The new feminine voice came out small and breaking.
“What if we can’t fix this? I don’t wanna be a girl… let alone an adult…”
Cole set the ceramic bowl down carefully, like it might shatter the last of their old reality. “Maybe they got moved? I don’t know, but they’re not here in the basement.”
Kai swallowed, nodded once, and put down the soft shirt he’d been clutching. “Okay…”
He turned and started toward the stairs again.
Cole followed automatically—and then something caught his eye that he couldn’t seem to look away from.
As Kai walked, his hips began to shift. The change was slow at first, almost polite, then undeniable.
The bones widened with a deep, rolling pressure that made his center of gravity drop.
His thighs thickened in the same rhythm, soft new muscle and fat filling out against the inside of the gray sweatpants until the fabric pulled tight across the fronts and the seams dug into the outer edges.
The sway in his step appeared without permission—subtle at first, then natural, each movement carrying a new, unconscious roll of the hips.
Kai didn’t seem to notice.
He started up the carpeted stairs. Every step made the changes accelerate.
The seat of the sweatpants stretched tighter as his ass rounded and filled, the new curves swelling outward with each upward movement.
Soft flesh shifted and settled under the thin cotton, the growing weight of it visible even from behind.
The fabric clung, outlining the fresh split of the cheeks, the way they lifted and swayed with the motion of climbing.
Cole’s mouth went dry.
Holy shit… Zoey’s ass is looking really nice in those sweats.
The thought arrived fully formed, hot and clear, while he had a perfect view of the jiggling mass of new flesh moving just above him on the stairs. Heat flooded low in his gut. His new adult body reacted before his mind could catch up—an unwanted, heavy pulse of interest that made his face burn.
He whispered it under his breath, almost afraid the stairs themselves would hear.
“The fuck was that…”
He kept climbing anyway, eyes still locked on the changing shape of the person who used to be his best friend, the first real crack of forced attraction already settling under his skin like it belonged there.
