Chapter 6 Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
They made it back upstairs.
The house still felt too quiet, too finished. Somewhere toward the back of the hallway a low, indistinct sound drifted out of one of the bedrooms—soft, rhythmic, wrong in a way neither of them could name. Both of them turned toward it at the same time and started walking.
Halfway down the hall they passed a giant mirror that had never been there before.
It ran almost floor to ceiling, framed in clean black metal, the kind of statement piece that belonged in a staged adult home and not the place where two teenage boys used to live. Kai’s eyes caught the reflection by accident. He stopped dead.
Cole walked straight into him.
“Dude, what the hell?” Cole’s deeper voice bounced off the walls.
Kai didn’t answer. He was staring at the mirror like it had just punched him in the chest.
The person looking back was not a boy.
Soft chestnut hair fell past slender shoulders in loose waves.
The face was narrower, the cheekbones higher, the mouth fuller.
The last traces of teenage softness had smoothed into something unmistakably young-adult and feminine.
Wide, startled eyes stared out of a face that already looked like it belonged on the other side of twenty.
“I… I… I actually look like a girl!” The new voice cracked on the words, high and terrified. “Holy fucking shit, dude. I’m almost an adult woman!”
He lifted both hands and pressed them to his own cheeks.
The reflection copied every movement. Soft skin.
No stubble. The shape of the jaw under his palms felt wrong—delicate, smooth, finished.
He dragged his fingers back through the long hair and the strands slid across his knuckles like expensive silk.
The same deep, rolling cramp that had rewritten his legs earlier ignited in both shoulders at once.
It traveled downward in a slow, relentless wave—through the biceps, the elbows, the soft insides of the forearms, all the way to the tips of his fingers.
His arms didn’t shrink much in length, but the muscle underneath melted and redistributed.
The teenage wiriness softened into something longer, leaner, more graceful.
The tendons in his wrists became finer. While his fingers were still buried in the hair, they lengthened by a fraction of an inch; the nails pushed forward into neat, glossy ovals that looked like they had just left a salon.
Kai stared at the manicured hands in the mirror and felt something cold and permanent settle behind his ribs.
Cole had gone quiet beside him. He stepped closer to the glass and studied his own reflection.
The boy who used to stand there was gone.
In his place was a tall adult man—broader through the shoulders, sharper in the jaw, the last of the teenage roundness burned away.
He leaned in and turned his head slowly from side to side.
Dark stubble shadowed his cheeks and the line of his throat.
I’m due for a shave soon, he thought, and the casual adult certainty of the thought made his stomach twist.
Kai’s new voice came out smaller, almost shy, and a bright flush climbed his cheeks. “Damn, Cole… you couldn’t even grow any facial hair last month and now look at you. Mr. Tall, Rugged, and Handsome…”
Cole’s own face went the same shade of pink. The words landed somewhere low and unwanted. He couldn’t stop looking at the way the long hair framed Kai’s—Zoey’s—new face in the mirror.
“T-Thanks…? You look pretty cute yourself…”
The silence that followed was thick enough to taste. Both of them stood there in the hallway, reflections stacked side by side—one newly tall and stubbled, the other soft and feminine and still wearing the same gray sweatpants that now clung in all the wrong places.
Kai turned around.
The motion made the new curves of his ass shift under the thin fabric. He caught the side view in the mirror and froze again.
“Does my butt look bigger to you?”
Cole’s eyes dropped before he could stop them.
The sweatpants were stretched tight across a rounder, fuller shape than had existed ten minutes ago.
Soft flesh pressed against the cotton, the cleft between the cheeks faintly visible, the whole thing lifting and settling with every tiny shift of weight.
Heat flooded low in Cole’s gut—unwanted, heavy, immediate.
He swallowed.
“Er… yeah. Actually…”
He tried not to think about how good it looked. He failed.
