Chapter 10
Robin had a doctor now, and she wasn’t happy with him.
He only wanted to see her once a week for six weeks, then they’d go down to every other month.
Like that was going to be enough for her.
He was an older man who didn’t understand the depression that she had.
She was going to make sure that he was on board with what she wanted, or she’d have to fire him. If she could.
The only reason that she’d been released from the hospital is because she’d finally found a doctor.
There needed to be someone to monitor her meds for her and to make sure that she wasn’t going to hurt herself.
All she’d done was mention that one time when Blake had pissed her off, and now they were treating her like she was some kind of alien. She didn’t like that either.
Her household wasn’t up to par for her either. She just knew that they’d been slacking off while she’d been gone. Her room had been cleaned, but she knew there were hidden devises all over the room and in her living room as well. But finding them was hard. She called for the butler.
“Where are they?” He looked confused, and she wanted to smack him. “You know what I’m talking about. You’ve been recording me so that you can turn it over to my doctor. I won’t have it. That’s a trigger for me, and you’ll remove them right now.”
“There are no recording devices in your house. None that I know of anyway. It would have been you who would have had to okay them, and I’ve not seen a single person here since you’ve been to the hospital.
” She asked about Blake and her country husband.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen her here in years.
And her husband has never been here. Not that I’ve been made aware of anyway. ”
“He’s responsible for this. I just know that he’s been messing with my depression, and he thinks he can get away with it.
” Since she didn’t know his name, she just referred to him as Butler.
He said that he’d never met her brother-in-law before.
“He’s nothing to me. And as soon as I can figure out a way to have it annulled, I’m going to make sure that he’s not a part of Blakes life either.
She wants to have children with him. Do you have any idea what that will do to my depression?
It will send me back to the hospital where they’ll have to give me my meds through IV. ”
“They can do that?” When he realized that he’d asked something that was none of his concern, he told her that he was sorry. “I misspoke just now, and I’m sorry, ma’am.”
“Do you want me to be depressed again? When you speak out of turn, it sends me into a spiral that has no end. I don’t want to end up in the hospital again.
You don’t want me to be depressed all over again either, do you?
” He said that he didn’t. “See that you don’t.
I have enough triggers going on around here as it is.
” He nodded once and backed out of the room.
Calling her attorney, she asked him how she was to get a marriage annulled.
He asked her the age of the person she was doing this for, and she had to explain to him that her sister had gotten married, and she didn’t like the man she was married to.
He told her that nothing could be done if they were consenting adults.
“I want them annulled. Do you have any idea what it does to my depression to know that he’s out there with my sister making babies?
I won’t have it. It will depress me so much to know that she’ll be having his kids and bringing them around to me.
They’ll be triggers, I just know it.” He said that he was sorry.
“You should be. I want it done, and you’re going to figure out a way to make it happen, or I’ll be really depressed.
You don’t want me depressed, do you? I can bring a world of hurt down on you if you make me depressed more than I am right now. You don’t want that, trust me.”
“There is nothing I can do about it. Is this the same sister that you had me get her phone number? You didn’t tell me that she was a Dresden now.
I won’t be able to do that for you again either.
I like being an attorney, and I don’t want to be disbarred because I pissed off someone with more money than anyone else in the world.
” She told him that she had money. “They could buy and sell you several times over and never worry about where their next meal was coming from. And you don’t want them as an enemy either.
They’re good people, but they protect what is theirs. ”
“They depress me. Doesn’t anyone understand that I can’t be this depressed and function, too?
Christ, it’s like I have to tell people every day what’s wrong with me.
I suffer so badly, and no one cares. Do I have to tell you what it does to me not to have things just right?
” He said he was sorry, but he liked his job.
“I’ll fire you then. It’s what has to be done in order for me not to have to be this depressed all the time. What will you do then?”
“I’m sorry that we have to part ways, but I think you’re right.
It’s for the best.” She didn’t like that he was agreeing with her and told him so.
“I don’t want to depress you any more than I have to.
You’ll have my letter of resignation in the morning.
I’ll send it to you by courier.” Then the line went dead.
She tried calling him back, but the line no longer rang in his office, but at a service. And she wouldn’t put him through at all. Slamming her phone onto the table, she heard it break just as she was calling for Butler.
“He hung up on me, and I want you to make him pay.” He looked confused, and she felt her depression get the better of her.
“You heard me. I said that I want you to get in touch with my attorney and tell him I’ll decide when he quits me.
Damned man has made my depression worse than it’s ever been, and now I can’t see straight.
I’m going to have to have him disbarred for hanging up on me.
” She looked at Butler. “What are you standing around for? I said to call him back and tell him that he’s my attorney, even though he’s been a trigger for me this whole time.
I just don’t know what to do right now.”
“Perhaps if you were to call your sister, she could help you.” She glared at him. “Or not. But when you speak of her, she can usually calm you down.”
“I don’t need calming down. I need someone to take my depression seriously and know that I suffer worse than anyone else in the world.” He nodded but still didn’t move. “Call him or be out the door like he is.”
For the rest of the day, she was left alone.
If there was anyone in the house, she never saw them.
Not that she went looking for them, but she knew they were avoiding her because of her depression.
Well, they could all go to hell. She didn’t need them around her when she was like this, and if anyone asked, she was going to tell them.
Just as she was ready to find Bulter, she heard the front doorbell ring.
“I’ve got it.” Not that anyone came out to get the door, but she pulled it open just as the bell was ringing again. “What do you want? I’m having a terrible day, and I don’t need you trying to sell me something when I’m this depressed. Go away.”
“My name is Reagan Dresden.” She wondered why that name sounded so familiar and asked him what he wanted again. “I’m married to Blake.”
“The country doctor, is it?” He said that was him. “I want you to divorce my sister. It’s not healthy for me to have you hanging around her when I’m this depressed. You either do as I tell you, or I’ll have to sue you. I’m just in the mood to do it too.”
“I’m not divorcing Blake. I came here to tell you that she’s decided not to come and see you now that you’re home.
” She asked him why he’d care. “Because it upsets her to be around you, and I don’t like that.
She’s better off, and so are you, to just leave each other alone so that you can go on with your lives. ”
“Where do you get off telling me how I can treat my sister. She’s my calm place.
My doctor said that I need something that I can count on to not trigger my depression.
” She thought about what she was saying.
“Everything about her triggers my depression, especially where you’re concerned.
I want you out of her life, or I’ll sue you. ”
“I’m sorry you feel that way, but I’m in love with her, and I’m not going to divorce her.
Not ever. Especially not for you.” She told him that he was triggering her depression, and he’d better change his tune.
“I’m not going to do anything you want because of your depression.
The two of us will live a happy life on our own, and I suggest you do the same.
It’s not fair of you to treat your only sister the way that you are. ”
“I’ll tell her how I’m going to treat her.
” She was getting a headache and didn’t know what to do about it.
Her nose was bleeding too. “See what you’ve done?
You’ve made my depression worse by being here.
I want you to go to the courthouse and tell them you’ve made a mistake in marrying Blake.
They’ll do it for you because you’re a Dresden. Whatever that means.”
“I’m not doing that.” He looked like he was ready to do battle, but she had something of her own to deal with him. “I’ve said what I needed to say, and now I’m going to head home to my lovely wife. You have a good life. Or whatever kind of life you can have, the way that you act all the time.”
Pulling out the gun that she’d only just purchased that day, she pointed it at him. When he raised his hands up in the air, she felt a bit of satisfaction that she’d not felt before. Someone was afraid of her, and she loved it.
