9. Colony Miles
The last thing I ever expected was waking up to a puddle of my nectar from dreaming about Keondra.
Sex with him was nothing short of amazing.
The rounds we had on his birthday had my head gone.
Maybe it was because it had been so long, or maybe it was because Keondra knew what he was doing.
It almost scared me how quickly I was falling for him, but he made it effortless, almost too easy.
With Keondra, there were no red flags. From the start, he’d been showing me exactly who he was, and I appreciated it.
The most attractive thing about him was how good of a father he was.
I adored a man who was active in their children’s lives.
Over the years, I’d seen my fair share of single mothers, which was one reason I made it a point to have affordable childcare, but single fathers were rare to come by.
Since I’d decided to take the day off, I slept in. When I grabbed my phone to check the time, I couldn’t believe it was after eight o’clock. The rest was much needed, but it was time to get up and get my day started.
After a good, hot shower and my morning hygiene routine, I headed to my kitchen to fix myself a cup of coffee.
Surprisingly, I hadn’t heard from Keondra, which was unusual.
I’d gotten used to waking up to a ‘good morning’ text from him, or some form of communication, so to hear nothing but crickets almost made my mind wander to negative thoughts.
I instantly shook them off and texted him first. Maybe he had a rough morning or was busy.
Anything could’ve happened. I finished fixing my coffee and waited for a reply.
Ten minutes passed and nothing. He’d read my text but didn’t respond.
Biting my bottom lip, I went to Serenity’s contact and called her to get her advice before my mind began to spiral.
“Hey, sister girl. What are you doing?” she answered in a chipper tone.
“Oh, tell me you got some without telling me you got some.” I giggled and sipped my coffee.
“And it was good as hell. The perfect way to start my morning. From the sound of your voice, I can tell your morning wasn’t the same.”
“I had to call you to talk me down.”
“What’s going on?”
“I might be reading too much into it or something, but I didn’t wake up to my usual text from him. Not wanting to be prideful, I texted Keondra first. Why did this man read my message and not respond? It has now been twelve minutes, and I haven’t heard a peep.”
I carefully plopped down on my couch and heavily sighed. Slowly, I could feel my thoughts going down a road I thought had been blocked off. The thought ‘things were too good to be true’ echoed in my mental, and I wanted to scream.
“Oh, Colony.” Serenity gushed. “You really like him, don’t you?”
“I do, Serenity. So damn much. After talking to God in the morning, I look forward to talking to Keondra. He’s throwing me off, and it doesn’t help that I’m off today with nothing but time to come up with untrue scenarios to put myself in a sunken mood.”
“You’re so damn dramatic.”
“I’m serious! I will literally think myself out of liking him. After my last relationship, you know I’m good for it.”
“I know. I know. Listen, think of it like this . . . Keondra is a busy, single father. I mean, we witnessed how his business is thriving and demanding. We witnessed him juggling work and fatherhood. Don’t take it personal, Colony.
Like you said, anything could’ve happened to throw his morning off.
Give it some time before you shut the man out completely.
If he hasn’t responded in a timely manner, call or pop up on his ass. I did it to Jacob and look at us.”
“Yeah. Well, that’s because your ass is crazy.”
I could hear Serenity snap her fingers. “You better know it. I’ve been crazy about that man since day one. Keondra seems like a good man. He has his own shit going on, so calm your ass down. I’m more than sure he’ll reach out soon.”
“I surely hope so.”
Talks with my sister always made me feel better. She was right. I was being crazy which was a sign of how much Keondra had grown on me.
Fifteen minutes into our conversation, my doorbell rang. I wasn’t expecting anyone, so I pulled my cameras up on my phone. My cheeks rose so high that I almost couldn’t see.
“Serenity.”
“What?”
“He’s here.”
“Who? Keondra?”
I kissed my teeth. “Girl, who else?”
“Ooohhh, so he likes to do pop-ups too. I knew I liked him! Go get that man out the heat and call me later to tell me about your day. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Ending the call, I rose to my feet and did a little shimmy before going to open the door for Keondra. He stood there with more bush lilies, smelling oh so divine. His melanin glowed underneath the sunlight, and if it wasn’t so hot, I would’ve let him stand there to simply admire God’s hard work.
“Good morning, beautiful.”
“Good morning, handsome. I had to say, I thought you’d forgotten about me this morning,” I admitted, taking the flowers from him and stepping to the side.
When he walked by, my hand automatically went to his bulky arm, which was on full display in the tank he wore. He smirked and pushed his glasses up, something I oddly found sexy as well.
“I could never forget about you, Colony. I just wanted to surprise you, and I know how I am. If I would’ve spoken to you, I would’ve told on myself.”
“Oh, so you had me sweating for no reason?”
He chuckled and tugged on his goatee. “My bad. I didn’t mean to. You just have me doing things I don’t normally do.”
“Oh, really?”
“Really. When you told me you’d taken the day off, I made some arrangements to do the same so we could spend the day together.”
If I smiled any harder, my jaw would’ve cracked. “That was a well-kept surprise. I guess I can give you a pass.”
Keondra stepped into my personal space, tucked his fingers underneath my chin, and blessed me with a sensual kiss. “Do you forgive me?”
“Only if you give me another kiss.”
He obliged, and I happily accepted. Kissing him was something I could never get enough of. The passion behind it always made me weak at the knees. I could stay wrapped up in him all day and never get tired.
Feeling the heat gather in my center, I pecked Keondra and peered up at him. “What are we doing today?”
“Well, KeKe’s birthday is coming up, so I wanted to see if you would come help me pick out a few things for her. After that, I figured we could go have a picnic by the waterfall before I have to pick her up.”
“Oh, I’m so down for that. I am hungry now, though. I was about to fix me something to eat.”
Without replying, Keondra winked at me and headed to my kitchen.
I followed him to see what he was up to while switching my flowers out.
Keondra scoured through my fridge and cabinets, pulling out ingredients I’d forgotten about.
He washed his hands and started cooking.
It took no time for my house to start smelling heavenly, making my stomach growl something serious.
“Now, how did you whip up all this from nothing in my kitchen?” I questioned when he set a plate of fluffy, homemade butter biscuits, over easy eggs, turkey bacon, and the little bit of fruit I had left in front of me.
“I have that touch. You gotta know what you have and how to use it.”
“Oh, trust me. You do.”
Keondra winked at me, knowing exactly what I was talking about.
A moan rattled my throat when I took a bite of a biscuit, and it melted in my mouth like butter. “This is the best biscuit I’ve ever had in my life. I could easily eat these every day and never get tired of them.”
“Anytime you want them, let me know, and I’ll make them for you. Biscuits were one of the first things I learned how to perfect. My grandma worked with me on it for three days until I passed her test. I make them better than my mom, but she never wants to admit it.”
“I love that.” I snickered. “A little friendly family competition.”
“That’s exactly what it was. When my grandma fell ill, I used to cook for her, and she’d secretly tell me I was the better cook. Man, I miss her.”
“How long has it been since she passed?”
“Today makes eight years.”
There was a far-off look in his eyes, one that was filled with emotion.
Setting my fork down, I hopped off my seat and went around to embrace him.
My arms snaked around his torso while his went around my neck.
He laid his cheek on top of my head, and it was crazy how he felt like home to me.
Keondra felt like the safest place I could ever reside.
Deep down, I hoped I could provide him with the same feelings.
“Thank you, Colony,” he whispered and kissed the top of my head.
“I felt like you needed it.”
“I did. I needed you.” His hold slightly tightened.
“This morning, my heart felt heavy, and I couldn’t figure out why, because I went to bed excited to surprise you.
When I realized the date, I knew today was meant to happen.
God aligned it this way for a reason, and I’m happy I get to spend it with you. ”
Little did Keondra know, his words were confirmation for me. Just like that, we’d developed a bond that was becoming stronger by the day. To know he desired to be with me on one of the hardest, most emotional days of his life meant everything to me.
“He did. It’s crazy because I was going to wait until Friday to have a three-day weekend, but something kept telling me to just do it today. I’m glad I did.”
“Me too.”
I stood on my tiptoes to kiss his cheek and went to finish eating before my food got cold.
Once we were both done, we cleaned the kitchen before I grabbed my things so we could head out for the day.
Ironically, we were somehow matching in our yellow and brown.
Those were two colors I felt looked stunning on melanated skin, but on Keondra . . . chef’s kiss.
