Chapter Nine #2

"Listen to me very carefully," Harper commanded, her voice dropping to a fierce whisper.

Her eyes burned with a protective fire that could have melted steel.

"I don't care how much money they have. I don't care that Cameron looks at you like you hung the moon.

If he ever steps out of line, if he ever makes you feel trapped, or if anyone in this twisted family tries to hurt you or that baby, I will burn their empire to the ground.

I don't care that he's my blood. You are my family, Aura.

You always have been. I will protect you from him. "

Aurelia stared into Harper’s blazing, defensive eyes. The sheer absurdity of the situation crashed over her. Here was Harper, a twenty-something real estate agent, fiercely threatening to dismantle a billionaire who also happened to be her literal brother.

A slow musical laugh bubbled up from Aurelia’s chest, breaking the tension.

Harper blinked, thrown off guard. "I am being serious, Aurelia."

"I know you are," Aurelia smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners with genuine amusement. She reached up, gently cupping Harper’s cheek.

"And I love you for it. But Harper, sweetheart... he’s your brother.

You are currently threatening to go to war against your own sibling to protect me from the man who panic-carried me to an elevator because I smelled garlic. "

Harper’s fierce expression faltered, a begrudging flush creeping up her neck. "He’s still a billionaire. They are unpredictable."

"I think we will be okay," Aurelia said softly, pulling Harper into a warm, grounding embrace. "But thank you. It is good to know I have a Langsford in my corner."

While the quiet revelation unfolded on the terrace, a far more malicious narrative was attempting to take root in the lower depths of the corporate hierarchy.

The corporate world was a vicious, churning ecosystem fueled by ambition and starved for scandal.

The abrupt relocation of a junior designer to the inner sanctum of the CEO, followed closely by the highly visible, dramatic moment Cameron had carried her to his private elevator, had ignited a firestorm of toxic gossip.

On the sixteenth floor, the whispers spread like venom through the cubicles.

Did you hear? She slept her way right into the penthouse.

I heard she trapped him. Classic gold-digger maneuver. Give it a month before he pays her off and kicks her to the curb.

She’s just a tramp who got lucky in the right office at the right time.

The rumors were atrocious, designed to tear down the serene, untouchable aura Aurelia naturally possessed.

Except, Aurelia never heard a single word of it.

She was insulated. The forty-second floor was a fortress, accessible only by biometric clearance that Julian strictly controlled. But the brothers were not content to simply hide her away. They were Langsfords, and their retaliation was swift.

In a windowless security hub two floors below the penthouse, Julian stood behind a bank of glowing monitors, his face an emotionless mask of cold, calculating wrath. Sebastian stood beside him, a tablet in his hand, monitoring the internal communication networks of the entire conglomerate.

"I've flagged three associate directors and twelve mid-level managers on the design tier actively circulating the slander," Sebastian reported, his charismatic facade erased, replaced by the protectiveness of a man defending his family.

"They’re using the encrypted internal chat servers. They think they're anonymous."

"They are mistaken," Julian replied softly, his fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard.

Julian was a master architect of legal destruction.

He didn't just fire the offenders; he dismantled their professional futures.

Within the span of three hours, severance packages were revoked under clauses of gross professional misconduct.

Non-disclosure agreements were weaponized with the threat of catastrophic litigation.

Terminations were executed with silent efficiency.

By the end of the day, the sixteenth floor was operating in a state of terrified silence. The message had been delivered with the subtlety of a sledgehammer: speak ill of the woman in the penthouse, and your career ceases to exist.

The toxic web of gossip was crushed, swept away so thoroughly that the venom never even had the chance to breach the atmosphere of the executive floor.

By Friday afternoon, the sprawling CEO’s office had taken on a bizarre, almost surreal domesticity.

The overwhelming exhaustion of the first trimester had hit Aurelia like a freight train. She was currently curled up on the massive, curved leather sofa in the center of Cameron's office, buried under a remarkably soft, heated throw blanket that Sebastian had specifically ordered from Milan.

She was battling a lingering wave of nausea, her eyes closed, listening to the ambient sounds of the room.

It was a strange, impossible gathering. Harper sat in a nearby armchair, aggressively typing out an email on her laptop, pausing every few minutes to glance protectively at the sofa.

Sebastian was leaning against the edge of Cameron’s desk, quietly recounting an absurd story about a difficult actor on one of his production sets, deliberately keeping his voice to a soothing murmur.

Julian was standing near the windows, adjusting the automated blinds to ensure the afternoon glare didn't hit Aurelia’s eyes.

And Cameron was sitting on the edge of the coffee table, mere inches from her side, ignoring his duties as the head of a global empire to ensure she had an optimal supply of ice water and saltines.

Aurelia opened her eyes, peering out from beneath the edge of the blanket. She looked at the four of them. Three billionaires and the fiercely defensive sister who shared their blood, all tiptoeing around a corporate sanctuary because she felt a little dizzy.

It was ridiculous. It was overwhelming.

She felt so incredibly cherished, so thoroughly wrapped in an invisible armor of care, that the sheer weight of it brought a sudden sting of tears to her eyes.

She was too tired to analyze the strange, unspoken tension that sometimes crackled between Harper and the brothers.

She was too exhausted to demand answers about why they treated her with a devotion that bordered on reverence.

"You guys," Aurelia whispered, her voice rough with sleep.

The entire room froze. Four heads snapped toward the sofa simultaneously.

"Are you in pain?" Cameron asked instantly, leaning forward, his large hand gently brushing the hair from her forehead.

"Do you need a bucket? I have a bin right here," Harper offered, slamming her laptop shut.

"I'm fine," Aurelia laughed, a weak, watery sound that echoed in the vast room.

She reached out from beneath the blanket, her fingers finding Cameron's wrist. She looked around at the makeshift, fractured family trying so desperately to piece themselves together around her.

"I just... thank you. All of you. You don't have to stop the world turning just because I need a nap. "

"The world can wait," Julian said quietly from the window, his sharp eyes softening as he looked at the mother of his future niece or nephew.

"Absolutely," Sebastian agreed, offering a brilliant, movie-star smile. "Besides, watching Cameron abandon his billion-dollar acquisitions to fetch crackers is the greatest entertainment I've had all year."

Cameron ignored his brother. He turned his hand, lacing his fingers gently through Aurelia’s, his gray eyes dark with a quiet, eternal promise. "Rest, Aura. We aren't going anywhere."

The private medical suite attached to Langsford Holdings was a sterile marvel of white marble and cutting-edge technology. It lacked the chaotic energy of a public hospital, smelling faintly of lavender and high-grade antiseptic.

It was the day of the first trimester ultrasound.
