Chapter Nine #3
Aurelia lay back on the padded examination table, her sweater lifted slightly to expose her stomach. Dr. Whitmore sat on a rolling stool beside the machine, calibrating the screen.
The tension in the small room was thick enough to suffocate on.
Cameron stood on Aurelia’s right side. The CEO was a picture of rigid anxiety. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle feathered violently in his cheek. He held her right hand in a grip that was infinitely gentle, yet desperate, as if letting go would send him tumbling into an abyss.
On Aurelia’s left side stood Harper. She mirrored Cameron’s rigid posture, her sharp eyes darting between the doctor, the ultrasound machine, and the billionaire across the table. She held Aurelia’s left hand, claiming her own territorial right to protect the family she had chosen.
"Alright, if you could both give me just a few inches of space to maneuver the wand," Dr. Whitmore requested politely, looking highly amused by the two fiercely protective sentinels guarding his patient.
"I am perfectly positioned," Cameron stated, his voice a low gravelly rumble. He didn't move an inch.
"I'm not in your way," Harper snapped simultaneously, glaring at the doctor.
Aurelia let out a long, exasperated sigh, looking between the two of them. "If the two of you don't stop acting like guard dogs, I am going to have security remove both of you to the hallway."
Harper’s mouth clicked shut. Cameron immediately softened his posture, dropping his head in a slight gesture of apology. "I'm sorry. I just... I need to know everything is alright."
"We will know in a second," Dr. Whitmore soothed, squirting a dollop of clear, cold gel onto Aurelia’s lower abdomen.
He pressed the transducer wand against her skin, moving it slowly in small, deliberate circles. The screen of the machine flickered to life, displaying a grainy, shifting landscape of black, white, and gray shadows.
Cameron stopped breathing. His heart hammered a violent, deafening rhythm against his ribs.
The ghosts of the previous timeline—the blood, the wreckage, the unbearable, hollow silence of a future robbed from him—clawed at the edges of his sanity.
He stared at the screen, terrified of the darkness, terrified of a silence he wouldn't be able to survive twice.
Harper squeezed Aurelia’s hand, her own pulse racing. She didn't trust the universe. The universe was cruel, and it liked to snatch happiness away the moment they dared to believe in it.
Dr. Whitmore adjusted a dial on the console, his eyes narrowed in concentration.
And then, a sound filled the room.
Swish-swish-swish-swish.
It was a rapid, galloping rhythm, fast and incredibly strong. It echoed off the sterile walls, cutting through the anxiety, shattering the ghosts of the past, and filling the space with the undeniable, miraculous drumbeat of life.
"There we are," Dr. Whitmore smiled, pointing to a tiny, fluttering cluster of pixels on the monitor. "That is a perfectly healthy, incredibly strong heartbeat. The pregnancy is progressing beautifully, Miss Sinclair. Everything is exactly as it should be."
Aurelia gasped, her free hand flying up to cover her mouth. Tears of overwhelming joy spilled over her lashes, tracking hot and fast down her cheeks. She stared at the screen, the reality of the child growing inside her finally anchoring itself in her soul.
Harper let out a shattered, watery breath, her fierce facade crumbling. She pressed a kiss to Aurelia’s temple, her tears mixing with her best friend's. "Oh, Aura. It's really there."
Cameron didn't say a word.
The untouchable master of the corporate world, the man who commanded empires with a flick of his wrist, slowly sank to his knees beside the examination table.
He pressed his face into the soft fabric of Aurelia’s sweater, his broad shoulders trembling violently as a broken, soundless sob tore through his chest.
It was the sound of salvation. It was the undeniable proof that the timeline had truly fractured, that the tragedy of their past had been rewritten by the sheer, unstoppable force of a second chance.
Aurelia looked down, her heart expanding until she thought it might break. She pulled her hand free from his grip, burying her fingers deep into his dark hair, cradling the weeping billionaire against her side.
Cameron turned his head, pressing his lips to her stomach, right over the spot where the cold gel rested, right above the galloping heartbeat of their child.
"Thank you," Cameron whispered against her skin, his voice a ragged, breathless prayer of infinite devotion. "Thank you. Thank you."
Harper watched them, the resentment and the fury she had carried for so long struggling to hold ground against the sheer, blinding light of the moment. She looked at Cameron, seeing the desperate love pouring from his fractured soul.
She didn't forgive him for the past. But as the strong, steady heartbeat of a new Langsford filled the room, Harper silently acknowledged the truth she could no longer deny, he would tear the universe apart to keep them safe.
