Chapter Ten

The glacial chill settling over the sprawling Langsford estate had become impossible for its matriarch to ignore.

For weeks, a suffocating, impenetrable silence had replaced the usual deference her sons paid to their family.

Whenever Elena entered a room, Cameron would excuse himself with politeness.

Sebastian would openly roll his eyes and walk out.

Julian would simply stare right through the blonde woman as if she were a ghost haunting the upholstery.

Isla Langsford, a woman who ruled her domestic empire with an iron fist wrapped in velvet, had finally reached the limit of her patience.

Her sons were acting like strangers, treating their beloved adopted sister with a hostility that bordered on open warfare, and Isla was determined to extract an explanation.

Which was why, on a brisk Tuesday morning, the matriarch bypassed her usual social engagements and directed her private driver to the towering glass monolith of Langsford Holdings.

The ground-floor lobby practically parted like the Red Sea as Isla’s expensive designer heels clicked against the polished marble.

She did not stop at the reception desk; she glided directly toward the secure bank of biometric elevators reserved for the executive suite.

When the security operative posted at the doors hesitated, Isla leveled a glare at him so venomously aristocratic that the man hastily swiped his override card, granting her access to the forty-second floor.

As the brushed steel doors slid open to the penthouse tier, Isla stepped out, prepared to march directly into Cameron’s office and demand answers.

Instead, she stopped dead in her tracks.

The outer lounge of the CEO’s sanctuary had been rearranged. Where there used to be a sterile waiting area for visiting dignitaries, there was now a sprawling, sunlit alcove filled with plush furnishings, lush potted greenery, and a massive drafting table.

Sitting at that table was a young woman Isla had never seen before. She wore a loose, ivory-colored knit sweater, her dark hair tumbling over her shoulders in soft, chaotic waves. But it was not the stranger’s presence that paralyzed the matriarch—it was the man kneeling beside her.

Cameron Langsford, the ruthless, emotionally impenetrable billionaire of global industry, was crouched on the floor beside the young woman’s chair.

He was holding a porcelain teacup in one hand, offering it to her with a gentleness Isla had never witnessed in her eldest son.

The young woman accepted the cup, offering a soft, tired smile.

As she shifted, the loose fabric of her sweater pulled tight against her frame, revealing the unmistakable, gentle swell of an early pregnancy.

Cameron reached up, his large fingers delicately tucking a stray strand of dark hair behind the woman's ear. The look on his face—a look of unshielded reverence—made Isla’s stomach violently turn.

The matriarch stepped back into the shadows of the corridor, her perfectly manicured hands curling into tight fists. Her mind, conditioned by decades of high-society paranoia, instantly formulated the only narrative that made sense to her.

Her brilliant, untouchable son had not suddenly discovered romance.

He had been snared. Isla stared at the pregnant woman, her upper lip curling in disgust. In Isla’s worldview, this was nothing but a calculated, predatory maneuver.

Some nameless, ambitious nobody from the lower tiers had managed to get her hooks into the Langsford fortune, using a child as the ultimate anchor.

And her sons, ever protective of their bloodline, were indulging the parasite.

Isla didn't storm the office. She didn't scream. She simply turned on her heel, stepping back into the elevator, her mind already racing with strategies to eradicate the pest before the family name was dragged through the mud.

An hour later, the doors of the estate’s private drawing room clicked shut.

Elena sat on a velvet settee, a cup of Earl Grey resting untouched on her saucer. She listened with rapt, calculated attention as Isla paced the length of the Persian rug, recounting the scene she had just witnessed at the corporate tower.

"She had him fetching tea for her like a common servant, Elena," Isla spat, the diamonds at her throat catching the light as she gestured wildly.

"A girl with absolutely no pedigree, sitting in the center of his office, carrying a child.

It makes perfect sense now. This is why the boys have been so distracted.

This is why they have been so hostile toward you.

They are circling the wagons to protect this... this gold-digger."

Elena’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, though she kept her features perfectly composed into a mask of delicate shock.

The missing puzzle pieces from that disastrous night in the VIP suite were suddenly, violently snapping together.

Cameron had disappeared from his executive suites because the neurotoxin had driven him downward.

He hadn't fought off the drug; he had simply stumbled into the arms of a junior employee on the lower floors.

A cold, venomous fury ignited in Elena’s chest. The empire she had plotted to steal using that exact method had been accidentally usurped by some nameless employee. But as she watched her mother pace, the viper saw the perfect opportunity to weaponize Isla’s elitist rage.

"Mother, please, sit down. You are making yourself ill," Elena murmured, setting her teacup aside and rising to gently guide the older woman to an armchair.

"How can I sit?" Isla demanded, though she allowed herself to be guided downward.

"Cameron is a brilliant man, but he is fiercely honorable.

If this tramp managed to get herself pregnant, he would feel obligated to marry her.

We cannot allow half our voting shares to fall into the lap of a street-level grifter! "

Elena knelt beside her mother’s chair, taking Isla’s hands in her own, projecting an aura of deeply concerned innocence.

"Mother, think about it logically," Elena whispered, her voice laced with manufactured hesitation.

"Cameron is notoriously guarded. He does not indulge in office romances.

He barely speaks to the junior staff. Doesn't it strike you as impossible that he would willingly engage with a woman like that, let alone abandon his precautions? "

Isla frowned, her sharp eyes narrowing as she looked at her adopted daughter. "What are you implying?"

"I am only saying... men in Cameron's position are targets," Elena continued, letting the poison drip slowly into the matriarch's ear.

"If a woman was desperate enough to secure the Langsford wealth, she wouldn't leave it to chance.

There are substances, Mother. Chemicals that can render a man incapacitated, stripping away his judgment. "

Isla gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "You think she drugged him?"

"It is the only logical explanation," Elena lied, projecting her own exact crime onto the woman in the penthouse.

"She must have compromised him. She orchestrated a scenario where he had no control, trapped him in a pregnancy, and now he is too honorable—and perhaps too ashamed—to fight his way out of it.

He is being held hostage by his own morality. "

The disgust on Isla’s face morphed into a righteous wrath. The matriarch sat up straighter, her eyes burning with the cold fire of a woman preparing for war.

"If that parasite thinks she can drug my son and steal this family's legacy, she is profoundly mistaken," Isla vowed, her voice trembling with malice. "We are going to find out exactly who she is. And then, we are going to destroy her."

The weeks bled into each other, washing away the vibrant colors of autumn and replacing them with the pale, biting frost of an impending winter.

High above the freezing city, the forty-second floor remained an impenetrable fortress of warmth and security.

By the time the fifth month of her pregnancy arrived, Aurelia Sinclair’s life had fundamentally, irreversibly transformed.

The physical evidence of the child could no longer be disguised by oversized sweaters.

Her stomach had rounded into a distinct, beautiful curve.

The constant, debilitating nausea of the first trimester had finally faded, replaced by a radiant, almost ethereal luminescence that seemed to glow from her very skin.

Aurelia sat in the penthouse lounge, reading a thick novel, a soft smile playing on her lips.

She possessed an unshakable serenity. The billions of dollars surrounding her, the priceless art on the walls, the staggering power of the man who occupied the adjacent office—none of it phased her.

She didn't care about the Langsford conglomerate.

She only cared about the people who anchored her to the earth.

Harper was one of those anchors. Despite explaining the brothers' sudden involvement in their lives, Harper had never wavered.

She remained a fierce, protective shadow, moving her desk to the penthouse, vetting every meal brought up from the kitchens, and glaring at anyone who dared to look at Aurelia for too long.

And then, there was Cameron.

Aurelia lowered her book, her dark eyes drifting across the open archway to where the CEO was currently engaged in a hushed, intense phone call with the London bureau.

Cameron didn't just protect her; he worshipped the very ground she walked on.

He anticipated her needs before she even realized she had them.

If she shivered, a blanket appeared. If she looked fatigued, the entire executive schedule was instantly cleared.

He treated her with a gentle, breathless devotion that defied logic, and Aurelia had long ago stopped trying to question it.

She knew, with a biological certainty, that the man standing in the room would tear the universe apart to keep their child safe.
