13. Bella #5
As I sit there with Adrian, looking out at the city, I think about the journey that brought me here.
I think about the woman I was on that wedding day - naive, trusting, believing in a love that was never real.
I think about the woman I became after - broken, lost, unsure of who I was or what I wanted.
And I think about the woman I am now - strong, confident, loved beyond measure.
I’ve come so far. I’ve grown so much. And I owe it all to the man sitting beside me.
The man who found me when I was at my lowest. Who offered me a job when I needed purpose. Who fell in love with me even though he tried not to. Who gave me a family and a future and a happiness I never knew existed.
Adrian Sterling changed my life.
And I saved him too.
“What are you thinking about?” Adrian asks, noticing my distant expression.
“Just how lucky I am,” I say, squeezing his hand. “How grateful I am for everything we have.”
“Me too,” Adrian says, pulling me closer. “Every day, I wake up and I can’t believe this is my life. That you’re my wife. That those two beautiful children sleeping inside are ours. It’s more than I ever dreamed of.”
“It’s more than I ever dreamed of too,” I say, resting my head on his shoulder. “But it’s real. This is our life. Our family. Our future.”
“And it’s just beginning,” Adrian says, kissing the top of my head. “We have so many more years ahead of us. So many more memories to make.”
“I can’t wait,” I say, smiling. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.”
And as I sit there in Adrian’s arms, looking out at the city that’s become our home, I realize something:
I’m not running anymore.
I’m not hiding from my past or afraid of my future.
I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
With the man I love. With the family we’ve built together. With a life that’s more beautiful than anything I could have imagined.
What started as the worst day of my life - standing at that altar, realizing I’d been betrayed - led me to the best thing that ever happened to me.
It led me to Adrian.
It led me to love.
It led me home.
A few weeks later, we’re having a family dinner at our penthouse. Sarah and James are there, along with a few other close friends. The kids are playing in the living room while the adults sit around the dining table, laughing and talking.
“I want to make a toast,” Adrian says suddenly, standing up with his wine glass.
Everyone quiets down, turning to look at him.
“Five years ago,” Adrian begins, “I met a woman who changed my life. She was running down the street in a wedding dress, bleeding and crying, and she was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.”
I feel my cheeks heat as everyone turns to look at me.
“I offered her a job that day,” Adrian continues. “But what I really wanted was to offer her my heart. It just took me a while to admit it.”
There’s laughter around the table, and I smile, my eyes filling with tears.
“Bella, you’ve given me everything,” Adrian says, his voice thick with emotion. “You’ve given me a family, a purpose, a reason to be better. You’ve taught me what real love looks like. And I’m grateful for you every single day.”
He raises his glass. “To Bella. To our family. To the life we’ve built together. And to all the years ahead of us.”
“To Bella,” everyone echoes, raising their glasses.
I stand up and walk over to Adrian, throwing my arms around him. “I love you,” I whisper.
“I love you too,” Adrian murmurs, holding me tight. “Always and forever.”
Later that night, after everyone has left and the kids are asleep, Adrian and I are getting ready for bed.
“That was a beautiful toast,” I say, brushing my teeth.
“I meant every word,” Adrian says, coming up behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist. “You’re my everything, Bella.”
I turn in his arms to face him. “You’re my everything too.”
We stand there for a moment, just looking at each other, and I’m struck by how much I love this man. How much he means to me. How grateful I am that he found me that day.
“Thank you,” I say softly.
“For what?” Adrian asks.
“For saving me,” I say. “For loving me. For giving me this beautiful life.”
“Thank you for letting me,” Adrian says, cupping my face in his hands. “Thank you for taking a chance on me. For trusting me. For building this life with me.”
“I’d do it all over again,” I say, standing on my toes to kiss him. “In a heartbeat.”
“So would I,” Adrian murmurs against my lips. “So would I.”
As we lie in bed that night, Adrian’s arms around me, I think about everything we’ve been through. Everything we’ve overcome. Everything we’ve built.
And I realize that this - this right here - is what happiness looks like.
It’s not perfect. It’s not always easy. But it’s real. It’s ours. And it’s everything.
I close my eyes, feeling safe and loved and content.
And for the first time in my life, I know with absolute certainty that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
On every girl’s big day, don’t let anyone fool you, the groom is the most important detail.
And like I said, this was a story of revenge.
