CHAPTER THIRTY

The fight in the tunnel was brief and brutal.

Lucas moved like vengeance given form. He didn't kill—Olivia would remember that later, would love him for it—but he broke bones, disarmed cultists, and pinned Voss to the wall with a hand around his throat.

"You wanted to sacrifice her?" Lucas's voice was terrifyingly calm. "You wanted to open the way for things that would devour everything you claim to love?"

Voss choked, his face purple. "The old world... is dying... The Sovereign offers... transformation..."

"The Sovereign offers extinction. And you are too stupid to see it."

Sable arrived with soldiers, summoned by Marcus, who'd fled the moment Olivia was caught. The Sundered were arrested, bound, dragged into the light. Voss was locked in a containment cell, his purple candle confiscated for analysis.

Olivia sat on an ammo crate, shaking, while Lucas checked her for injuries.

"I'm fine," she said. "You got there fast."

"I felt you. Through the connection. Fear, then pain. I couldn't—" His hands trembled as they touched her face. "I couldn't let them hurt you. I would've torn the compound apart."

"I know." She caught his hands, steadying them. "But you didn't. You controlled it. That's what matters."

"What if I couldn't? What if next time—"

"Next time, I'll be more careful. And you'll trust me to handle myself." She squeezed his fingers. "I had a plan, you know. I was going to break free in three seconds."

"Three seconds is a long time when someone has a knife to your throat."

"True." She smiled, shaky but genuine. "Thank you for the dramatic rescue. Very cinematic. Valeria Vance would approve."

He laughed, the tension breaking. "Anything for my impossible girlfriend."

Sable approached, her expression grim. "Voss is talking. Naming names. There are more Sundered than we thought—infiltrated into every level of the Vanguard hierarchy."

"How many?" Olivia asked.

"Dozens. Maybe hundreds, across multiple compounds. This isn't a local problem. It's a movement." Sable's blue eyes were hard. "And it's connected to something bigger. Voss mentioned a 'Sovereign'—a leader. Someone orchestrating the Veil's collapse from both sides."

"The Pale Legion leader mentioned the Sovereign too," Lucas said. "They serve it. Worship it, maybe."

"Then we need to find it. Destroy it. End this war before it gets worse." Sable looked at Olivia. "You did good work, Thornwood. Reckless, stupid work, but good."

"My specialty."

"Indeed." Sable's expression softened almost imperceptibly. "Get some rest. Both of you. Tomorrow, we start planning the next phase."

She swept away, already issuing orders, her silver hair catching the light.

Olivia leaned against Lucas, exhausted beyond measure. "Is it always going to be like this?"

"Like what?"

"Chaos. Betrayal. Near-death experiences. Dramatic rescues."

Lucas was quiet for a moment. Then: "Probably. The world is broken, Olivia. We're trying to fix it, but the fixing is going to hurt. People will betray us. Enemies will surprise us. We'll fail as often as we succeed."

"That doesn't sound very hopeful."

"But we'll have each other." He kissed her hair. "And we'll have moments like this—quiet, safe, together—stolen from the chaos. Those moments are worth everything."

She closed her eyes, breathing him in—sweat and steel and the cedar-soap smell she associated with safety.

"Lucas?"

"Yeah?"

"I think I'm ready to say it."

He went very still. "Say what?"

She pulled back just enough to meet his eyes. "I love you. I'm in love with you. I probably have been for a while, but I needed to be sure. And I'm sure now."

Lucas's face did something complicated—relief, joy, disbelief, all layered together. "Olivia—"

"You don't have to say it back. I know you already—"

"I love you too. I've loved you since you refused to use proper hand wraps.

Since you threw yourself at a golem. Since you looked at me in that stairwell and decided I was worth kissing.

" He cupped her face, his thumbs tracing her cheeks.

"I love your stubbornness and your sarcasm and your ridiculous fictional hero.

I love that you never gave up, not once, not even when the world told you to shrink. I love that you became more instead."

Olivia kissed him. It was soft and fierce and tasted like tears she hadn't realized she was crying.

"Together," she whispered.

"Always," he promised.

Around them, the compound buzzed with activity—soldiers arresting traitors, leaders planning responses, a world struggling to hold itself together. But in that moment, in that stolen quiet, Olivia Thornwood was exactly where she wanted to be.

Loved. Seen. Fighting for something that mattered.

Valeria Vance had nothing on this.
