CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

The aftermath of the Sundered revelation consumed Compound Seven for weeks.

Arrests were made across the compound—officers, soldiers, even a few civilians who'd been recruited into the cult.

Sable led the interrogations personally, her blue eyes cold as she extracted names, locations, plans.

The scope of the conspiracy was staggering.

Sundered cells existed in every major Vanguard stronghold, all answering to a central authority none of them had ever met.

"The Sovereign," Olivia said, reviewing the intelligence with Lucas in their small quarters.

They'd been given a private room after the tunnel incident—a gesture of respect, or perhaps Sable's subtle acknowledgment that they'd become something the compound couldn't ignore.

"Everyone talks about it, but no one knows what it is. "

"Voss called it a 'transcendent being,'" Lucas read from the interrogation transcript. "Something that exists beyond the Veil, older than the Legion, more powerful than anything we've faced. It wants to merge the realms completely. End the separation between worlds."

"And the Sundered think that's good?"

"They think it's inevitable. That resistance is futile, so they might as well serve the winning side." Lucas's jaw tightened. "Cowards."

"Or desperate." Olivia thought of the people in the compound—survivors who'd lost everything, who'd watched the world end and were looking for any explanation that made sense. "Fear makes people believe terrible things."

"Fear doesn't excuse betrayal."

"No. But it explains it."

Lucas set the transcripts aside and pulled her into his lap. She went willingly, curling against his chest. These quiet moments were rarer now, stolen between training and strategy sessions and the endless work of keeping the compound functional.

"The Covens want another meeting," he said. "The Archon has information about the Sovereign. Something she wouldn't share before."

"Why now?"

"Because we proved ourselves. Because we healed the World-Tree. Because—" he hesitated, "—because you have a connection to it now. The tree's energy. They want to study you."

Olivia stiffened. "I'm not a lab experiment."

"I told them that. Sable backed me up. But they're insistent. They think your connection might be the key to understanding the Sovereign's weakness."

"Then they can ask politely. And I can say no politely."

Lucas smiled against her hair. "That's my girl."

"I am nobody's girl. I'm my own person who chooses to be here with you."

"Even better."

The meeting with the Covens happened the next day. The Archon presided, her phoenix mask gleaming in the armoury's harsh lights. Vesper sat beside her, the fox mask tilted in Olivia's direction.

"Thornwood," the Archon said. "Your actions have... impressed us."

"I wasn't trying to impress anyone."

"No. That's what makes it meaningful." The Archon's layered voice carried an undertone of amusement. "We have studied the energy signature you carry. It is unique—not awakened power, not Coven magic, but something older. Something that predates both."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you are connected to the fundamental fabric of reality in a way that hasn't been seen in millennia. The World-Tree accepted your offering. It bonded with you. That bond may allow you to do things that others cannot."

"Like what?"

"Like sense the Sovereign's presence. Like resist its influence. Like... possibly... harm it."

Olivia exchanged a glance with Lucas. "You want me to fight a god."

"We want you to be ready. The Sovereign is not a god. It is a being of immense power and ancient malice, but it is not omnipotent. It has weaknesses. And we believe—" the Archon paused, "—we believe it fears you."

"Why would it fear me? I'm five-foot-nothing with a spear."

"Because you are unexpected. Because you should not exist—the small warrior who defies probability, who survives what should kill her, who connects to powers beyond her nature. You are an anomaly. And anomalies are dangerous to beings who rely on predictability."

Olivia let that sink in. She thought of the Pale Legion leader's words in the crystal tower: *We did not see you. We will remember.*

"What do you need from me?" she asked.

"Training. Testing. Preparation." The Archon gestured, and Vesper stepped forward with a scroll. "The Covens have techniques older than the Vanguard. Ways to strengthen the mind against influence. Ways to channel unconventional energy. We offer to teach you."

"And in exchange?"

"Your alliance. When the time comes to face the Sovereign, we want you on our side. Not as a soldier—as a partner."

Olivia looked at Lucas. He nodded, barely perceptible.

"I'll learn," she said. "But I make my own choices. When the final battle comes, I decide how I fight. Not you. Not Sable. Not anyone."

The Archon inclined her masked head. "Agreed."

Vesper approached after the meeting, her fox mask close to Olivia's ear. "Be careful with the Archon. She means well, but she serves the Coven's interests first. Always."

"And you?"

"I serve the balance. The world needs the Veil, but it also needs what lies beyond. Complete separation is as dangerous as complete merging." Vesper's voice dropped to a whisper. "Find the middle path, little warrior. It's the only way to save everything."

She walked away before Olivia could ask what that meant.
