Chapter 7 Sheets Over the Balcony

I chose to stay in the fire and be reborn from the ashes.

This time I went straight to pry open the space under Grandma's bed and stuffed the packet of money she had buried there into my schoolbag. Grandma stared, stunned. "How did you know there was money here..."

I pressed down on her shoulders hard enough to keep her still. In her cloudy pupils, my current face was reflected.

The look was nothing like before. It stunned Grandma into stillness.

"Listen carefully to what I say next. In two minutes, two thugs will come in. Don't resist. Just tell them the money is all on me, or we both die!"

I knotted the bedsheets corner to corner and fixed them to the balcony. Grandma screamed as I climbed over. The downpour instantly blurred my vision. I tensed my body and inched down by instinct.

The moment my feet hit the third-floor balcony, the thugs smashed the door in.

Then came Grandma's helpless cry, and the sounds of struggle.

I clenched my teeth. I could not stop!

I was betting they would not kill so easily without the money. Only luring them out would give us a sliver of a chance!

Thunder cracked across the sky. Above my line of sight, a tattooed arm reached out, gripping a knife.

Fei Kun had cut the bedsheets.
