Chapter 8 How Did He Know

With a huge bang, I fell from the third floor straight onto the ground.

I heard my thigh bone crack. It was probably broken, but I could not care.

I staggered up. The slope down to the main road was long and narrow. Thunder kept rolling. The storm swallowed everything.

Including my cries for help.

Every shop on the street had its shutters down. Not one was open. I clenched through the pain and ran all the way to the main road.

I waved both arms, trying to flag something down.

Then a blinding pair of headlights hit me from far off. I threw myself at it—and only then saw it was a police car!

My legs almost gave out.

My nerves, stretched to the breaking point, almost snapped. I roared out of control. "Officer, help me! Two killers broke into my house, my Grandma is still inside! Please go save her!"

I had already lost my shoes. The soles of my feet were spotted with blood. I looked too wretched to be faking it.

"Don't panic. Slow down. Where is your home? What happened?"

The officer's steady, solid voice gave me a sense of safety I had never felt before.

"Yinghua Compound, Building B, 503, down the alley, is that right?"

Yes—I was about to nod, when I suddenly realized a problem—

I had not said it yet. How did he know my address?

The next instant, the officer cursed at someone behind me. "How do you even watch people? You can't even hold onto a little girl."

What? Every drop of blood in me froze. My mind went blank.

All hope hardened into bone-deep despair.

I turned my head, stiff.

Through the rain, Fei Kun walked toward us with a knife, a cold smile on his face.

Only then did I notice—the radio at the officer's waist had been off the whole time. His uniform buttons were done up wrong. A glimpse of orange-red prison clothes showed underneath...

So that was why Fei Kun and Ma Jiu had lingered so long in my house. They must have been waiting for someone.

There had always been three robbers.
