Luna #3
“Oh,” I laugh, feeling Cayden’s eyes on me as I bend down to Scarlett’s level. “I think your daddy wants special daughter-daddy time. But make sure to get an extra scoop of brownie fudge just for me.”
“Actually, I think Scar and I might enjoy the extra company tonight,” I hear Cayden say suddenly, glancing down at his daughter. “Right, baby girl?”
“Wight,” she beams.
“Well, how can I say no to this pretty fairy dancer?” I grin at Scarlett’s excitement. “Let me get my things, and we’ll go.”
“Yay!” She exclaims, bouncing on her toes as I stand up before occupying herself with twirls again in front of the mirror.
I can’t believe how much we are alike. My feet were always dancing even in my sleep. She’s no different with her need to keep expressing herself through movement.
“So the hot daddy didn’t have a sway on this decision, just the pretty fairy dancer?” Cayden says, quietly near my ear, so his daughter doesn’t hear.
“The hot daddy may have had something to do with my decision,” I whisper, fighting a grin, “but little pink tutus and brownie fudge ice cream are tough to beat.”
“I guess I just need to get more creative then,” he says, his eyes giving me a wicked gleam.
“Get your things, little moon, that mouth of yours needs to be fed.” He leans down lower, and his warm breath fans my skin.
“I thought that after this afternoon, you would have gotten more than enough to swallow, but you surprise me with this insatiable hunger of yours. It’s very hard to resist.”
My face heats up as I remember myself on my knees earlier, enjoying a different kind of dessert. His eyes flash with hunger, letting me know he’s thinking of the same thing as a smug smile teases its way out.
“You really enjoy getting me riled up, don’t you?” I mutter, feeling heat spread through my body.
“It’s the most fun I’ve had in years,” he says, with a dark chuckle as I walk away to get my things, feeling his eyes on me every step of the way.
Heading to the back office, I quickly freshen up in the bathroom and take a second to calm my racing heart, which Cayden seems to always accelerate before throwing on an old hoodie of my brother’s that I stole. I didn’t plan on going out after work, so leggings and a sweatshirt will have to do.
Grabbing my tennis shoes, I put them on before getting my purse and keys.
When I get to the reception area, Cayden is leaning against the doorway of the studio, watching Scarlett still having fun seeing herself in the mirrors. He turns when he sees me and lifts off the doorway as if it’s on fire.
“Oh, hell no,” he growls, looking at my sweatshirt.
“What?” I ask, looking down at the maroon shirt with the Devil’s logo on it.
“Is that yours?” He asks, his eyes hard as stone.
“Well, no. I think it belongs to Noah or maybe Travis? I can’t even remember to be honest,” I laugh, not seeing what the deal is. “Somebody left it at one of our get-togethers, and it’s comfy,” I shrug.
“Turn around,” he demands, twirling his finger and motioning for me to let him see my back.
Rolling my eyes, I turn around, and a low growl vibrates deep from his chest. I glance behind me and see a number on the back as he pulls his hoodie over his head, leaving him with a black tee on underneath.
“Here,” he says, his jaw tight as he hands me the shirt.
“Are you serious right now? It’s just a sweatshirt. I don’t see what the big deal is.”
“First, that’s a New York Devils shirt you’re wearing,” he says, flicking his eyes to my chest in disgust, “and second, you’re not wearing Knox’s goddamn number on your body,” he grits out under his breath.
“Wait…this is Knox’s old Devils hoodie?” I ask, my brows pulling together. “Savi must have left it at Sophia’s,” I murmur, glancing down at Knox’s old team, still not understanding why I can’t just wear it. “You really are going to make me change?” I sigh.
“Yes,” he says, waiting for me to take it off.
I roll my eyes again, and his turn darker, but he doesn’t say anything more as I pull the sweatshirt over my head and hand it to him.
Taking his, I put it on and stare at him. “Better?” I ask, holding the black hoodie out from my body and showing him the Bolts logo that’s now across my chest.
“Much.” He balls the other one up and keeps a firm grip on it. His eyes roam over me, and a fire blazes just beneath the surface before he tears his gaze away. “Scarlett, honey, time to go get ice cream,” he calls out, and she comes running in seconds later, all flushed and excited.
Taking her hand, he guides her to the door without another word.
What the hell was that all about?
I’m still trying to figure it out as I turn the lights out and lock the door behind me. He’s zipping up her little pink jacket as I join them on the sidewalk.
“Aren’t you cold?” I ask, feeling the slight coolness to the air this time of year.
“Not in the slightest,” he states, taking his daughter's hand. She immediately holds her other one out to me, and I catch Cayden’s eyes as her tiny fingers curl around my hand.
Something shifts in the depths of those greens that has my breath stolen out from under me.
It’s plain as day that he’s slowly losing control, and it’s scaring the hell out of him.
