Chapter 9

Jane Bennet was very, very used to hiding her emotions, and when Colonel Fitzwilliam left, she wished she could relax her careful act—but of course she had to hide her fear from her family as well as from the Colonel.

Even seeking solitude by rushing upstairs to the bedroom she shared with Elizabeth—or used to share, perhaps, would be more accurate—would be a giveaway that something was awry.

She had to stay with her family, acting the role of the serene eldest sister.

Pushing down her fear and uncertainty, down into the maelstrom of hurt and jealousy that she had been pushing down a long time, was just something with which Jane had to deal…every minute of every day.
