Chapter Six
They left the docks and made their way toward the small house on Winsor street. They all stopped a block away and were standing there staring at the house.
One of Hawk’s men stepped away from the trees to walk right over to them. He looked at Deke then at Sam and nodded. “I’m Rebel. They got here around an hour ago or so. They dragged the woman inside with them and they were none too careful with her if you know what I mean.”
“Sounds about right.” Sam growled as he could barely stand still.
Rebel paused then said, “They seem to be waiting for someone else maybe? They were talking to each other about waiting long enough to freak Cassie out. I think they said her name. Anyway, they were waiting to call her I think.”
Deke nodded. “Yeah, they are waiting to make a phone call to my wife.”
Rebel shrugged. “And there might be something else you need to know about.” He paused before he said, “I think there might be someone living in the basement of that old house. It reeks man and the garbage is waist high in some places, plus they got rats inside. That place ain’t fit for nobody to live in that’s for sure. ”
Deke nodded. “Yeah Hawk, already told us.”
Rebel scoffed and said, “Oh and those two idiots? They aren’t getting along so well. The younger one thinks he’s in charge but the older man doesn’t think so. They are quite testy with each other.”
Mountain asked, “How is the woman they brought with them? Is she hurt?”
Rebel shook his head. “Not really. They pushed her around shortly after they got here. She may have a bruise or two but she’s not in bad shape.
I used my binoculars and saw that she was in the corner out of their way.
But those two men? They are gonna come to blows before too long.
Their voices are getting loud enough to wake up the dead. ”
Deke looked over at Mountain and shook his head. Then he heard footsteps behind him and he turned.
Cassie joined them. She seemed calm, maybe a little too calm.
Deke dropped his gaze to her hands and they didn’t seem calm at all. He pulled her to him and told her the news, “She’s here and she’s got a few bruises. Rodney and Banger are arguing.”
Cassie nodded briefly. “They’re arguing over the gold most likely. But they won’t find it. Neither one of them knows the first thing about hiding anything in plain sight.”
“Are you even sure the gold is still there?” Mountain had to ask.
Cassie snorted. “Most of it should still be here. I didn’t have time to grab it all but I only left one small box behind.
Whoever found it could live on that amount for a good long time, but it wouldn’t last forever.
” She looked down the street and shook her head at the worn-out look of the house in question.
She turned to look at Deke. “I’m surprised it’s still standing.
I think you all should be careful of that too.
” She glanced at Sam and Mountain as well.
“You could fall through the floor, especially you two and Deke. The place is probably a death trap in more ways than one.”
A second man from the Sinners with the patch of Dak, agreed, “My take is that it’s being held up by the garbage piled up inside.”
Cassie nodded then looked down the street at the house.
Deke nudged her. “Baby, he said it looked as if someone were living in the basement, could that be possible?”
She shrugged. “I just don’t know. But if anyone could survive by cheating death and being a sly fuck, it would be him?” She actually shivered. “I hoped for all this time that he was frying in hell.” She nodded at the house down the street.
“No worries,” Mountain stated. “If he’s there, he will be arriving at his long overdue appointment with the devil.”
Sam glared at everyone. “We need to go and get her. Now.”
“Let’s make our plan of approach,” Deke told him.
They all discussed where everyone was going to be.
Deke told Cassie to stay with them and to stay low.
The whole group then moved closer.
Deke and Sam went around the entire structure to check the windows.
When they joined the others, Sam growled softly. “Someone blacked out all the windows but I think he’s right about someone living in the basement. The blacked out windows couldn’t completely hide the lights being on downstairs.”
Deke nodded. “Yeah and I found an internet line going in at the base of the house wall outside. Whoever is down there is hooked up to the net.”
Mountain frowned. “Who the hell do you think would live in a basement? Is he-she hiding from the world or hiding from something else?”
“Or someone else.” Sam growled a little louder.
“Hush, Bones,” Cassie admonished him. “We don’t want anyone to know we’re here yet.”
Sam growled again. “The hell with that, I want to kick that fucking door in and grab Melora. I don’t care who’s in that room with her. I’m so mad right now they wouldn’t dare try to stop me.”
“Dad...” Deke gritted his teeth. “The only way that happens is ending up with her possibly getting shot while trying to escape.”
“I promised Izzy I’d bring her best friend back alive and well.” Mountain growled back.
Sam glared at them both. “They wouldn’t dare. I’ll kill them both with my bare hands.”
“Dad.” Deke growled. “We have to do this smart, not just kick in the door and cause chaos.”
Sam looked disgusted. “Why not? This situation is just burning a hole in my soul. Something better happen soon or I’m going to lose my shit and kick in that door anyway.”
Dak from the Sinners tapped Deke’s shoulder and pointed down the street.
Deke looked over. Damn it, he’d missed Cassie walking away from them. She was halfway to the front door when he saw her and he knew he didn’t dare shout her name. He grabbed his weapon and growled, “Everyone get your shit together, Cassie just elevated this situation. Get ready.”
Everyone fanned out and surrounded the small house.
