Chapter 37 – Wave
Fireball after fireball flew at Wave. Okay, so Elena was pissed, but she hadn’t completely lost it yet. Her fireballs packed a punch, but she wasn’t using anything stronger, nothing lethal. It almost felt like she was testing Wave, and that made her wary.
Last time they had been going at each other, fire to electricity until Wave had been ready to drop. Then it had been her storm and water battering everyone down. And her scream. She had lost her siren voice in that storm.
A surge of power closed in on her from both sides, but she blocked just in time. When Dr. Kelsey stepped into view, a real flash of worry made Wave frown. She hadn’t been back to her fire lessons yet, and it seemed she never would.
What the fuck was Dr. Kelsey doing here with Elena?
“She may be a stormbringer, but she’s pathetically weak against fire,” he sneered.
Wave wanted to sneer back but held herself in check. She sucked at handling fire. She excelled at shielding against it. At least hellfire. Wave focused on pulling up a skintight water barrier and layered it in tight like the shield ball she had learned from Marc and Grant.
Her emotions threatened to flare and her storms with them. Bad time to think about Marc. She pressed her nails into her palms and forced her breathing to slow down. Focus. When her ice barrier melted away, she was ready to block.
Kelsey and Elena had clearly been ready too because a wall of fire attacked from Elena’s side and the wall of hellfire scorching the earth came from Kelsey. Actually, Elena’s wall was more powerful. For a demon, Dr. Kelsey’s hellfire was… pathetic. Wave frowned again. Something was wrong.
All the years of training and conditioning finally kicked in and Wave took a step back. She needed to get the hell out of here. Uncle Essi had warned her that something was going on with Hell’s politics.
“Oh, no, you don’t,” Kelsey snapped when Wave took another step back.
“I just want to burn her to a crisp,” Elena growled, her oozy cherry pie eyes flashing.
“Orders were to capture her alive,” Kelsey barked at Elena.
Run!
Wave spun on her heel, ignoring the two, and bolted.
“Fuck!” Elena screamed and sprinted after her.
Run, run, run. Always run first.
Wave pushed her feet to carry her faster. Her dragon scale water barrier absorbed the fireballs hitting her back much more efficiently than her previous water shield had. Hellion did say once that she would be happy for Marc’s grueling training when it saved her life.
Not. The. Fucking. Time. Wave.
Where should she go? Were they trying to get her in secret, or would they be brazen enough to catch her out in the open? There were always people around, but at this time of the evening, most of them were partying somewhere.
She was almost at the edge of the park when she felt a tug in her bond.
Jarred!
Barely a second later, the world swayed, and a portal opened almost on top of her. Without hesitation, she dove toward it. Jarred and Sinister reached for her at the same time and then she was through.
