Chapter 38 – Jarred
Jarred’s heart was beating so fast it was ready to burst out of his chest. Thank fuck Sinister had been at the party with him. It had taken an agonizingly long time for them to track Wave as it was.
First, they had gone to the library, the last certain location she had been, and found it closed.
Sinister was excellent at portaling, but even he needed a beacon to find a person.
Jarred had followed a faint instinct, and they had headed toward it in short bursts until he had actually locked into Wave’s location in their bond.
Now he held a gasping Wave, still covered in a watery shield, in his arms. Sinister hadn’t fully brought them through to the park, but they had pulled Wave through to their side, a few blocks back.
“Love, are you all right?”
“Yeah.” Wave grew steadier on her feet and looked over at Sinister. “Thank you. They were trying to capture me alive.”
“They?” Jarred scowled.
“Elena and Dr. Kelsey,” Wave replied. “He said they had orders to capture me.”
“Do they know?” Sinister asked, tense, and scanned the street around them. It was quiet, just some leaves floating in a mild breeze. Jarred kept his senses on high alert too but didn’t smell anything out of the ordinary beyond a waft of smoke coming from his Claimed.
Wave shook her head. “I don’t know. He only spoke about a stormbringer and they didn’t seem to have any voice blocking barriers in place. Not that I was really looking for them.”
“Okay. Where do you want to go?”
Now she looked at Jarred. “I… I don’t want to lead them to Ginny, Di, or Chrissy if they are chasing me down.”
“I can take you back to the Powerhouse,” Sinister offered, but Wave shuddered.
“I don’t know if I can deal with Hellion and Marc just now,” she muttered.
“Irishen’s.” Jarred decided. “I’ll call him and let him know you are all right. He can meet us there.”
“Someone needs to warn and check on Ginny, Di, and Chrissy,” Wave insisted.
“Call them,” Jarred said. “I’ll call Salis and tell him to go over to check, too.”
Wave fished for her phone. At the last moment, she realized she was still covered with water and let the shield go. With that, the burned side of her shirt became visible, but Jarred held his snarl in check. She didn’t seem hurt and they needed to get moving first.
“I could go check on them. It would be faster,” Sinister offered.
“Please!” At Wave’s sharp nod, he opened a portal and stepped through.
Jarred called Salis, who thankfully picked up quickly. He filled the angel in and hung up. “He’s heading there now,” Jarred informed Wave.
She kept the phone in her hand and immediately picked up when the screen flashed. “Are they all right?”
Jarred heard Sinister reply, and Wave sighed, relaxing. “Okay. Salis is on his way, but tell Ginny to check the wards. Something’s off. I don’t like this.”
“They will be fine,” Jarred tried to reassure Wave, who frowned.
It took just a moment until Sinister stepped through a portal again. “All right, you two. Hold on tight, and I’ll take you over to Irishen’s.”
“Are you sure you can carry two of us?” Wave checked.
“Yes, shrimp. I was fucking low on power last time. I can carry five if I’m not under attack.”
Wave frowned but relaxed further. “Dangerous to share details like that, Sin.”
“Oh, you got a nickname too,” Jarred groaned.
Sinister grinned. “Yep. Well, it’s something you need to know, shrimp. I can move your whole harem under the right circumstances.”
“I don’t—”
Sinister didn’t wait for Wave’s reply but grabbed their arms and opened another portal. That immediately shut Wave up and she clung to Jarred.
“Let’s go.”
