Chapter 7 The Almost Kiss #2
They had shared stories they had never told anyone else.
They had learned each other's habits.
They had become comfortable with silence.
They had started looking for each other across crowded rooms.
And now Ryan was standing close enough to Ethan that he could feel the warmth coming from his body.
The friendship had changed.
Maybe it had changed a while ago.
They had simply been too afraid to say so.
Ryan took a slow breath.
"Ethan."
"Yeah?"
"Can I ask you something?"
"Okay."
"Are you afraid of me?"
Ethan's eyes widened.
"No."
"Then what are you afraid of?"
Ethan looked down.
"I don't know."
Ryan waited.
Ethan finally looked up again.
"Maybe I'm afraid that if we do something, everything changes."
Ryan's chest tightened.
"Maybe it already has."
Ethan didn't answer.
Ryan knew he was taking a risk.
But he also knew he couldn't keep pretending the feelings weren't there.
He moved slightly closer.
Only enough to give Ethan the chance to step away.
Ethan didn't.
Ryan stopped.
Their faces were only inches apart.
Ethan's eyes moved between Ryan's eyes and his mouth.
Ryan noticed.
His heart began pounding.
He wanted to close the distance.
But he waited.
He wanted Ethan to choose it.
Ethan whispered, "Ryan."
"I'm here."
"I don't know what I'm doing."
"Neither do I."
That made Ethan smile.
The tension eased for half a second.
Then it returned.
Ryan lifted his hand slowly.
He stopped before touching Ethan.
"Is this okay?"
Ethan nodded.
Ryan gently rested his hand against Ethan's upper arm.
The touch was simple.
It was also enough to make both of them go still.
Ethan's eyes closed briefly.
Ryan felt something inside him shift.
He had imagined touching Ethan before.
But imagining it had been easy.
Actually doing it felt different.
It felt real.
Ethan opened his eyes.
Ryan could see the same uncertainty there.
But he also saw trust.
That mattered more than anything else.
Ryan leaned closer.
Ethan didn't move away.
Their foreheads almost touched.
Ryan could feel Ethan's breath against his face.
For a moment, the world seemed to disappear.
There was no campus.
No gossip.
No classmates.
No questions.
No fear of what anyone might think.
There was only Ethan.
And Ryan.
And the tiny space between them.
Ryan looked into Ethan's eyes.
He could have kissed him.
He wanted to.
More than he had wanted to admit.
Ethan's lips parted slightly.
Ryan leaned forward.
So did Ethan.
Their noses almost brushed.
One more breath.
That was all it would have taken.
Then Ethan suddenly stopped.
Ryan froze.
Ethan opened his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
Ryan immediately stepped back.
"Don't apologize."
Ethan looked overwhelmed.
"I just..."
"I know."
Ryan lowered his hand.
"You don't have to explain."
Ethan looked at him.
"I wanted to."
Ryan's heart skipped.
"You wanted to?"
Ethan nodded.
"I just got scared."
Ryan gave him a gentle smile.
"That's okay."
Ethan looked relieved, but the relief didn't last.
Because neither of them could pretend the moment hadn't happened.
They had nearly kissed.
There was no other way to describe it.
Ryan picked up his backpack.
"We should go."
"Yeah."
They walked toward the library doors.
Neither spoke.
Outside, the campus was quiet.
Most of the buildings were dark, and the paths were nearly empty.
Ryan walked beside Ethan.
Their shoulders didn't touch anymore.
The distance felt strange.
Too large.
At the dorm entrance, Ethan stopped.
"Ryan."
Ryan turned.
"What?"
Ethan looked nervous again.
"I don't want this to make things weird."
Ryan thought about that.
"It already made things different."
Ethan lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"But different doesn't have to mean bad."
Ethan looked up.
Ryan smiled.
"We're still us."
Ethan nodded.
"Right."
Ryan wanted to tell him that he wasn't disappointed.
That he understood.
That Ethan didn't owe him a kiss simply because they had almost shared one.
Instead, he said, "Take your time."
Ethan's expression softened.
"Thank you."
They entered the dorm.
The hallway was quiet.
When they reached Room 318, Ethan unlocked the door.
Inside, everything looked exactly as it had earlier.
Two beds.
Two desks.
Two lives sharing the same small space.
But Ryan knew it wasn't exactly the same anymore.
Neither of them spoke as they prepared for bed.
Ethan moved around the room quietly.
Ryan noticed that Ethan seemed lost in thought.
Finally, Ethan said, "Good night."
"Good night."
Ryan turned off the light.
They lay in their separate beds.
The room was dark.
Ryan stared at the ceiling.
He could still feel the warmth of Ethan's arm beneath his hand.
He could still remember the moment their faces had nearly touched.
He could still hear Ethan saying that he had wanted to kiss him.
Ryan smiled faintly.
Then the smile faded.
Because he knew this wasn't simply about a kiss.
It was about everything that had come before it.
The trust.
The confessions.
The nights spent talking.
The way Ethan searched for him in crowded rooms.
The way Ryan noticed every change in Ethan's expression.
Their friendship had become something neither man could comfortably put back into its old shape.
Across the room, Ethan shifted beneath his blanket.
Ryan wondered if he was awake.
"Ethan?"
"Yeah?"
"Are you awake?"
"Yeah."
Ryan smiled into the darkness.
"Me too."
There was a quiet pause.
Then Ethan said, "About tonight..."
Ryan waited.
"I don't regret it."
Ryan's chest tightened.
"Neither do I."
Another silence followed.
"I just don't know what it means," Ethan said.
Ryan thought carefully before answering.
"It means we're allowed to figure it out."
Ethan was quiet.
Then he said, "Okay."
Ryan closed his eyes.
The answer wasn't a promise.
It wasn't a confession.
It wasn't a relationship.
But it was enough.
For tonight.
Because the space between them had changed.
Their friendship had crossed an emotional boundary, and neither of them could honestly pretend otherwise.
They had come within one breath of kissing.
They had stopped.
But stopping hadn't erased what they felt.
If anything, it had made the truth harder to ignore.
