Chapter 8 What If We Tried? #2

It also made him feel strangely calm.

That evening, Ethan returned to Room 318 after practice.

Ryan was sitting at his desk, working on his laptop.

He looked up.

"Hey."

"Hey."

Ryan smiled.

"How was practice?"

"Good."

Ryan studied him.

"You okay?"

Ethan nodded.

"Yeah."

He put his bag down.

Ryan turned back to his laptop.

Ethan stood there for a moment.

His heart was beating too fast.

He could leave it alone.

He could wait another week.

Another month.

Maybe longer.

But he was tired of letting fear make every decision for him.

"Ryan."

Ryan turned.

"Yeah?"

"Can we talk?"

Ryan closed his laptop.

"Of course."

Ethan sat on the edge of his bed.

Ryan turned his chair toward him.

"What happened?"

"Nothing bad."

"Okay."

Ethan took a breath.

"I've been thinking about yesterday."

Ryan's expression softened.

"So have I."

"I know."

Ethan looked down at his hands.

"I was scared."

Ryan nodded.

"I know."

"But I don't want to keep being scared."

Ryan remained quiet.

Ethan looked at him.

"I don't know what happens if we try this."

"Neither do I."

"I don't know if I'll be good at it."

Ryan smiled.

"Neither will I."

Ethan laughed quietly.

"That's not very reassuring."

"It should be."

Ryan stood and walked closer.

"We don't have to be perfect."

Ethan looked up at him.

"What if we mess things up?"

"Then we talk."

"What if it gets complicated?"

"We talk."

"What if I panic?"

"I wait."

Ethan felt his throat tighten.

"What if you change your mind?"

Ryan's expression became serious.

"Then I'll be honest with you. But I'm not looking for a reason to leave."

Ethan nodded.

That was the answer he needed.

Not a promise that nothing would ever hurt.

Not a guarantee that the future would be easy.

Just honesty.

He stood.

Ryan was close now.

Ethan could feel the familiar warmth between them.

He could smell the faint trace of sweat left from his own practice beneath his clean shirt. Normally, he would have worried about it.

Tonight, he didn't.

Ryan wasn't stepping away.

That mattered.

Ethan took one small step closer.

Ryan watched him carefully.

"Are you sure?" Ryan asked.

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Ryan didn't move.

He let Ethan decide.

Ethan's heart pounded.

He remembered the library.

The almost kiss.

The way fear had stopped him.

This time, he didn't want fear to decide for him.

Ethan lifted his hand and gently touched Ryan's shoulder.

Ryan's eyes softened.

Ethan took a breath.

Then he leaned forward.

Their lips met.

The kiss was gentle.

Careful.

Almost uncertain.

For the first second, Ethan could barely process that it was actually happening.

Then Ryan relaxed against him, and Ethan felt the tension leave his shoulders.

The kiss lasted only a few moments.

It wasn't dramatic.

There was no rush.

No desperate movement.

Just the quiet realization that something they had both been afraid to name was finally real.

When they separated, neither spoke.

Ethan looked at Ryan.

Ryan looked back.

Then they both laughed nervously.

Ethan covered his face with one hand.

"Oh my God."

Ryan laughed.

"That bad?"

"No."

Ethan looked at him.

"Not bad."

"Good."

"It was just..."

"What?"

"Real."

Ryan smiled.

"Yeah."

Ethan felt warmth spreading through his chest.

He had kissed Ryan.

He had actually kissed him.

And the world had not fallen apart.

His friendship with Ryan had not disappeared.

Instead, somehow, it felt even more honest.

Ryan reached for his hand.

Ethan let him.

Their fingers intertwined again.

"How do you feel?" Ryan asked.

Ethan thought about it.

"Nervous."

Ryan smiled.

"Me too."

"Happy."

Ryan's smile widened.

"Me too."

Ethan looked at their joined hands.

"I keep waiting for something terrible to happen."

"Nothing terrible is happening."

"I know."

Ryan squeezed his hand.

"You took a risk."

Ethan nodded.

"I did."

"And?"

Ethan smiled.

"I'm glad I did."

They sat together on the edge of Ethan's bed.

For a while, neither spoke.

They didn't need to.

Eventually, Ryan said, "So what now?"

Ethan laughed softly.

"I don't know."

"Dating?"

The word made Ethan's stomach flutter.

"Maybe."

Ryan looked at him.

"Maybe?"

"I think I need a little time."

"That's okay."

"But I don't want to pretend we're just friends anymore."

Ryan smiled.

"Neither do I."

Ethan looked at him.

"Can we take it slowly?"

"Absolutely."

"No pressure?"

"No pressure."

"No rushing to tell everyone?"

Ryan nodded.

"Your choice."

Ethan smiled.

"Thank you."

Ryan leaned slightly closer.

Ethan didn't move away.

Their shoulders touched.

It felt natural.

Strangely natural.

For so long, Ethan had believed that being seen was something to fear.

Now he was beginning to understand that being seen by the right person could feel completely different.

Ryan knew his insecurities.

He knew his habits.

He knew the things Ethan tried to hide.

And still, Ryan had kissed him.

Still, Ryan was holding his hand.

Still, Ryan was there.

Ethan rested his head lightly against Ryan's shoulder.

Ryan stayed still for a moment, then relaxed beside him.

"This is nice," Ethan whispered.

"Yeah."

"I never thought I'd do this."

"Neither did I."

Ethan smiled.

"Are we really doing this?"

Ryan looked down at him.

"I think we are."

Ethan laughed softly.

The fear hadn't disappeared.

He knew it wouldn't disappear overnight.

There would still be days when he worried about people noticing them. There would still be moments when his old insecurities returned. There would probably be questions they weren't ready to answer.

But for the first time, Ethan wasn't facing those fears alone.

He had Ryan.

And Ryan had him.

Their first kiss hadn't solved everything.

It hadn't erased years of shame or made Ethan suddenly confident.

It had simply opened a door.

A door Ethan had been too afraid to approach before.

Now he was willing to step through it.

Slowly.

Carefully.

With Ryan beside him.

Ethan looked at him and smiled.

"One more?"

Ryan laughed.

"One more."

Ethan leaned in again.

This kiss was still nervous.

Still gentle.

But it felt easier.

And when they pulled apart, both of them were smiling.

They didn't know exactly what their new relationship would become.

They didn't know how long they would need to keep it private or how other people would react when they eventually found out.

But they knew one thing.

They were no longer pretending.

Their friendship had become something more.

And instead of running from that change, Ethan had finally chosen to explore it.

Not because he had stopped being afraid.

But because, for the first time, he had found someone worth taking the risk for.
