Chapter 10 Sophie
Sophie
My mother sipped her tea calmly as she looked my way. She had something to say, so I just watched her and waited.
“So you really like this man, I assume, is what you’re telling me.”
“I do. I think you will too, which is why I’m coming to you first. I know Dad has his mind made up about Lincoln, but he’s not for me, Mom. We’re just not a good fit.”
“Sweetheart, you’re a strong woman and I love that about you, but what you fail to realize is sometimes it gets in the way of your ability to see things for what they are.
Lincoln is a good man. He’s established, his family is established, and he can be for you what your father was to me.
You’re happy right now and I know you love what you do.
I’m so proud of you, Sophie. My daughter is a beautiful, strong, successful woman.
There’s a lot to be said for that, but I would expect that one day you’ll want what I have, a husband and a family, too. ”
“Of course I do, but what does that have to do with Lincoln and me not being a good fit?” I frowned at my mother, disappointed because she sounded just like my father and Lincoln. I expected her to understand.
“Not everyone is a perfect fit, Sophie, but you weigh the good and the bad. And Lincoln has a lot of good. What do you even know about this man, sweetheart? What’s his name?”
“Trooper, and I know he’s good to me. He makes me happy. I smile all the time when I’m with him. He’s not from our world and that’s the thing I love most about him. The name Prescott doesn’t matter to him; all he cares about is Sophie.”
“Trooper?” My mother frowned a bit as she repeated his name.
“Yes, Trooper, why are you looking like that?” I saw something in her eyes she wasn’t saying. I assumed his name wasn’t prestigious enough. She didn’t recognize it as one of the elite she rubbed elbows with in her social groups and committees.
“This man might be what you need right now, and I get that, you’re having fun. You deserve that, but Sophie, you’re twenty-six years old. It’s time to start thinking about your future,” my mother said, then lifted her glass.
“My future?” I laughed at her statement. “What’s that supposed to mean? I can have fun with a man like Trooper, but when I consider my future, I need to think about men like Lincoln? What makes you so sure Trooper isn’t the type of man I would marry.”
“I just know, Sophie. You’re a certain type of woman who requires a certain type of lifestyle. It’s not just about you. It’s about this family, your future family.”
I dropped my fork and it clashed against my plate, causing my mother’s eyes to move around the restaurant. She was embarrassed, but I didn’t care. I lifted my napkin from my lap and dropped it onto my plate before I pushed my chair back and smoothed my dress with the palm of my hands.
“I think I’m going to go,” I said calmly before I stepped closer to my mother. I kissed her cheek and she just looked at me with a frown.
“Sophie Maria, I know you’re in your feelings right now, but you have to understand I only want what’s best for you.
Your father and I both. You’re a Prescott, and that comes with certain responsibilities.
Trust me, I know. I’ve been right where you are, but I also know sometimes you have to make a choice to protect your future.
Enjoy him for now, but don’t think it will be anything other than what it is, fun.
I know I can’t talk you out of bringing him tomorrow night, so just be prepared for your father’s reaction.
I’ll talk to him, but you know how he is.
Your father is set in his ways, Sophie.”
“I know. I love you and I’ll see you tomorrow.”
With that, I left my mother sitting there. She had made her choices in life, and now it was time for me to make mine. I had feelings for Trooper and my parents’ feelings about that weren’t going to change them.
“Stop running, Sophie,” Trooper tugged a fistful of my hair, pulling my head back enough to kiss my lips while he drilled into me from behind. The steamy hot water from the shower beating against our bodies only made the sensation better.
My chest was pressed against the tile wall of his massive shower and he held me there as he moved in and out of me so aggressively I felt as if I could easily split in two. I honestly had no complaints though, because it was pleasurable pain.
“Cum for me, Sophie. I need to feel it, baby girl.” Trooper landed into my body, pushing in as deep as he could before pulling out again and repeating the motion. It was so intense I did exactly what he asked and released everything I had.
“Good girl,” he said against my neck. After he thrust into me a few more times, he pulled out completely and I felt his firmness pressed against my back while he came.
Our shower session didn’t allow time to get a condom and I was grateful he’d pulled out. I wasn’t worried though, because the few times we had unprotected sex, he made sure not to cum in me.
We never had a conversation about kids, but I assumed he wasn’t interested right now, and neither was I. We were still new and didn’t really have any confirmation as to what we were. I wasn’t with anyone else, and I assumed he wasn’t either, but that didn’t mean we were ready for kids.
“Fuck, man. You got me all out of my element, Sophie.” Trooper grabbed my waist and forced me back against his body. We were now standing directly under his massive shower head while he trailed kisses across my neck and collarbone.
“Out of your element? How?”
He chuckled and reached around me to grab his soap. “In a lot of ways, just trust me.”
“Is that good or bad?” I asked, turning to face him. It sounded like it could go either way.
“Both,” he replied with a grin, then pecked my lips. “Now hurry up, so we can get out. I’m tired as hell and want to feel you wrapped around me as I go to sleep.”
Ten minutes later we were in his bed with darkness surrounding us. My body hugged the side of his while his hand moved up and down my thigh.
“I told my mother about you today,” I said randomly and let my teeth sink into my lip while I waited. He knew we were very close based on conversations about my family.
“Oh yeah? And what did she say?”
“She said whatever makes me happy,” I lied, but he didn’t need to know that.
Trooper lifted his head and looked at me. The room was dark, but I felt his eyes on me and I smiled.
“I make you happy?” he questioned.
“Yes.”
He kissed my shoulder and let his head fall back into the pillow again.
“Do I make you happy?” I hadn’t planned to ask, but after the conversation I had with my mother earlier, I had so many things in my head. Maybe she was right and this was just fun.
I felt my body shift a little as Trooper pulled away from me, then hovered above me. I saw the outline of his face as he stared down at me with a smirk.
“I like what we have. I like you, so yeah, I’m good right now.” He dropped down enough to graze my lips with his before he sent his tongue into my mouth. The way he worked his tongue against mine and pressed his lower half against me, I creamed instantly.
“I’m happy, Sophie,” Trooper said before he lay down again, yanking my body against his.
“Tell me about your family. You never talk about them.”
I felt his body tense against mine before his deep voice flowed through the room.
“That’s ’cause there isn’t a damn thing to say.
My mother was a crackhead and I don’t know who my father was.
Until I was six months old, my parents were listed as unknown on my birth certificate.
The only reason I know my mother is because she came looking for me when someone told her she could get money if she kept me.
When she found out she couldn’t get custody of me because she was strung out on coke, she disappeared again and never looked back.
I’m not surprised though. The same day she had me, she left me in the toilet where she’d delivered me.
A crack head found me, flagged down a cop, and showed him where I was.
That’s fucked up, right? So why would I talk about her or a father I don’t know?
They ain’t shit and I’m good. Story made sure of that.
So he’s the only person I even consider family. Well, him and Los.”
Floored by his confession, I just kept quiet. I didn’t know what to say.
“Ay, why you so quiet? Don’t let that affect you one way or another, I damn sure don’t. It doesn’t mean anything.” Trooper kissed my shoulder again and laughed. “It was motivation. If it hadn’t been for them, I wouldn’t be who I am today and I’m not complaining about that.”
I smiled at his outlook on things. If he was okay, I was okay, but I appreciated him telling me. It made me feel that much closer to him.
“See, that’s what I mean about you got me out of my element.
The only people who know my life story are Los and Story.
You got me telling you things that will get you killed.
” He chuckled and I stayed quiet. “I’m not gonna hurt you, Sophie, relax.
I didn’t mean anything by that.” His large hand moved across my leg up to my waist.
“I know you won’t hurt me,” I said softly.
“Good, because I mean that. Never be afraid of me. No matter what.”
I closed my eyes and moved my hand up his chest, letting it rest there. It sounded like there was something else to his confession, but at the moment, I didn’t care. I felt safe with him in every way possible.
