Chapter Sixty

Xane

It’s dark out by the time we’ve got our supplies organized inside the main cabin of the jet.

There are three battery operated lanterns on one table, alongside the first aid box, cups, and other camping supplies. Kian switches one of the lamps on.

He smiles at me. “Well?”

I give him a reluctant nod, and I glance back at the pile up of snacks and water covering the other table’s surface. “We’ve got what we need.”

His smile morphs into a grin.

I’ve got to admit, Ki put a lot more effort into his original plan than I expected, so we have a decent amount of food, drink and other supplies for our trek through the jungle.

Between the four of us, we’ve split the supplies into five piles that we can use to half-fill the backpacks he apparently bought for this trip. The packs are massive, so whatever clothing we’re taking can be placed on top of these supplies for our trek.

Aside from the back packs, we’re going to be taking turns carrying the sandwich cooler, and two pop-up tents. It feels like every base is covered.

“I think tonight’s dinner should be marshmallows and crackers,” Kian admits. “It’s not the most practical food we’ve got, so maybe we do that before we get out into the jungle.”

He probably even planned that part.

It’s not the most appetising meal, but it makes sense to use those supplies up tonight.

The bag of marshmallows is huge, and it’s not like they have much nutritional value.

“That sounds so fun,” Scarlett says with a smile. “I haven’t had toasted marshmallows in forever.”

And, of course, that response has Kian beaming like a lunatic.

He’s been glued to her side since we got into the jet, keeping her separated from Trick at the same time.

“Fine by me,” I answer, before he can start a conversation about marshmallows. “Take what you need for that. We can pack the bags while you go start a fire.”

“Uh, okay, sure,” he murmurs. “I’ll be on the beach when you guys are done here.”

He gathers up everything he needs, his gaze staying on Scarlett the whole time.

Trick moves in beside her and puts an arm around her.

Kian pulls a face, and I clear my throat.

“I’ll help Ki set up. I’ll be back in a couple minutes.”

I pick up a flashlight and turn it on, pointing the light on the steps out of the jet.

Kian pulls his gaze away from the Omega, sighs, and then leaves the jet.

I walk after him, shaking my head.

He waits for me to get to his side so we can both see where we’re walking.

“Aren’t you gonna do something about those two?” Kian asks, his voice low.

I raise an eyebrow. “What do you want me to do, exactly? They’re fully grown adults, Ki.”

“Well, yeah, but you’re the lead Alpha, and she’s our fated mate.”

I take in a deep breath.

Now that we’re away from her direct vicinity, I expect the air to be free from her scent.

It’s not. The sweet, fruity smell of her perfume is lighter out here, sure, but it’s still present.

I don’t know how we’re gonna get through four more days of this.

“That’s what you’re worried about?” I ask.

“It’s not right if he marks her first.”

“He’s not gonna do that.”

I push back some leaves and let Kian walk on to the beach first.

“He’s probably doing it now,” Kian mutters, as he walks over the sand.

“He’s not,” I assure him.

“He made her perfume.”

“I noticed.”

“She’s ours, Xane. Don’t pretend you can’t tell. Not now.”

I want to deny it, but I can’t force the words out of my mouth.

There’s nothing I can say that won’t sound like bullshit, and I think he knows that.

He stops and sits down near the trees they were sitting at earlier and starts to set up a small fire from the supplies he brought with him. He looks up at me.

“Thanks for lighting my path, but I think I can manage now.”

“We’ll be back in a few minutes. Don’t use up all the matches.”

He rolls his eyes. “I know how to light a campfire.”

Taking in another deep breath, I walk back to the jet.
