Chapter One-Hundred-Thirty-Seven

Scarlett

The doctor’s office checkups are incredibly boring, but at least I know my heart health is good.

Riley’s sting gets looked at, and he’s prescribed painkillers. Xane and Trick get a full bill of health, and Kian is told to make sure he books an appointment with a dentist, but that’s only because a jelly bean fell out of his pocket when he sat down in the patient’s chair.

Lunch is served in the hotel’s bar and it’s the best food I’ve tasted in ages.

These guys know how to eat. That’s for sure.

We’re all pretty much one more bite away from food comas, when we decide it’s time to stop eating. The serving sizes were huge but there’s no meat left on any plate, and what is left behind is minimal.

“I don’t get how you guys aren’t seriously overweight,” I admit. “The food here is crazy-good.”

Kian laughs. “We only get it for one week of the year, though.”

“And we all usually do some kind of exercise while we’re here,” Riley adds.

“You’re not gonna be hitting the gym with that sore foot,” Xane reminds him.

He sighs. “Yeah. I’ll have to be a bit less greedy at dinner.”

Kian laughs. “That was dinner, my guy. If we’re lucky by the time we want more food the kitchen will rustle up sandwiches or something, but it’s gonna be late.”

He’s probably right. It’s almost four p.m. and we just got done with lunch.

“What’s the phone line situation out here?” I ask, thinking about calling Sapphire.

“It’s kinda weird,” Xane admits. “They have a system, but it’s not always running.”

“There’s the manager,” Trick says. “Let’s go ask.”

He gets up and I follow him as he walks over.

“How are we doing?” she asks the second she sees us.

“Great,” I tell her. “But I was wondering if it would be possible to make a phone call?”

She grimaces slightly. “Unfortunately, the storm damaged our systems. So, we don’t have a working phone system right now. We have a technician coming from the city, but he won’t be here for a few days. We have a boat that runs to the city every three days if you wanted to mail a letter?”

“I can wait,” I decide, knowing sending a letter would be pointless.

She’d probably only get it after the phone call.

It hasn’t been that long. Sapphire won’t be worried about me.

“Can someone let us know when we can make a couple of calls?” Trick asks.

She nods. “Of course. Your rooms are ready, too. You can pick the keys up at reception when you’re ready.”

We both thank her before we head back to the table.

Trick doesn’t sit back down, so I don’t either.

“The room keys are ready at reception,” Trick says.

Kian jumps to his feet. “I’ll grab them.”

He’s already off like a shot, before Xane and Riley start to get up.

“I should make an appointment at the stylists,” Trick murmurs.

“I’ll come with you.”

He smiles and takes my hand.

“Okay, but wait for the room keys,” Xane tells us.

We all head out of the bar into one of the bright, airconditioned corridors.

This whole place is completely perfectly air-conditioned.

Coupled with the amazing food, I can see why these guys love it so much.

We see Kian up ahead at the reception desk, taking a bundle of keys from the receptionist.

I guess we all have separate rooms.

That kinda sucks.

Kian is still talking to the receptionist when we reach him.

He passes her back the keys, and she taps a few keys on her computer before she passes him a single key.

“Your room upgrade, Mr. Orion. Have a pleasant stay.”

“Thanks,” Kian says, turning to us with a grin. “Did I do good, or did I do great?”

Xane takes the key from him. “Honeymoon suite?”

“The one and only.”

I can feel my cheeks burning.

The honeymoon suite is for newlyweds, but I guess what we are goes beyond even marriage.

Plenty of people get married without marking each other as mates.

And plenty of mated people decide not to bother with marriage.

“Then we’ll see you up there,” Trick says, as he leads me down another corridor, past the reception desk.

I watch the row of store fronts as we pass, and I can hardly believe everything they’ve got.

Half the rooms here must be occupied with staff.

There’s a dress shop, a candy store, a drycleaners, a jewellers.

So many other things I can barely take it all in.

Then, we get to the tattoo parlor, and Trick stops.

“This wasn’t here last time,” he murmurs.

“Did you want to go inside?”

“Maybe,” he admits. “I had an idea to complete this one, and I’d usually wait, but I think if this guy can do it, I want it done.”

“I’m intrigued.”

He smiles. “It’s missing something. You were right about that. I think it would look better with a red dragon like yours twisted around it, here and here.”

“I can see it,” I admit. “But why a red dragon?”

“Because it’ll make me think of you, Scarlett.”

That is so sweet.

I smile. “Let’s go see if he can do it.”
