Chapter 10
CHAPTER TEN
RILEY
I take a deep breath, steadying my nerves as I sit across from Liz in the bustling hospital cafeteria. The words tumble out of my mouth, a confession I can no longer keep to myself.
"I think I'm falling for Nate."
Liz's eyes widen, a grin spreading across her face. "No shit, Sherlock. It's written all over your face every time you talk about him."
I duck my head, feeling the heat creep into my cheeks. "Is it that obvious?"
"Only to someone who knows you as well as I do," Liz says, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand. "But Riley, this is a good thing. You and Nate, you've got something special."
I nod, my throat tightening with emotion. "It's just... it's not just about the attraction, you know? It's the way we work together, the way we understand each other. I've never had that with anyone before."
Liz leans back in her chair, her expression thoughtful. "You two are a force to be reckoned with, that's for sure. The way you've taken on this investigation, the risks you're willing to take to expose the truth... it's inspiring."
I feel a swell of pride at her words, mixed with a twinge of fear. "But what if it all goes to hell, Liz? What if we can't pull this off, or worse, what if something happens to Nate because of me?"
Liz shakes her head, her gaze fierce. "Don't you dare start doubting yourself now, Davis. You and Nate have got each other's backs. And that's a lot more than most people have."
I let out a shaky breath, feeling the knot in my chest loosen. "You're right. I just... I never expected to feel this way, you know? It's exciting and scary at the same time."
Liz grins, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Welcome to the wonderful world of falling in love, my friend. It's a wild ride, but trust me, it's worth every second."
As I leave the cafeteria, my phone buzzes with a text from Nate.
NATE
Meet me at Cafe Noir in 20. Urgent.
My heart races as I read the message. Whatever's going on, it must be significant for Nate to call an emergency meeting.
Twenty minutes later, I spot Nate at a corner table in the dimly lit cafe. His face is tense as I slide into the seat across from him.
"What's going on?" I ask, keeping my voice low.
Nate leans in, his eyes intense. "Liam's found something big. We need to go to the SilenceBreakers HQ."
I blink in surprise. "HQ? I didn't even know there was one."
"That's the point," Nate says with a grim smile. "It's not exactly something we advertise. But given what you've uncovered, it's time you saw it. Are you ready?"
I nod, thrill and nervousness churning in my stomach. "Lead the way."
Nate guides me to a nondescript building a few blocks away. As we approach a blank wall, he presses his hand against what looks like a normal brick. A hidden door slides open, revealing a sleek elevator.
Nate and I exchange a loaded glance as we step into the hidden SilenceBreakers headquarters. The air is thick with apprehension, and my heart's pounding like a jackhammer.
A man with tousled blond hair and intense eyes behind rimless glasses looks up from a bank of computer screens as we approach. Nate clears his throat.
"Riley, I'd like you to meet Liam Novak," he says, gesturing to the man. "He's our top intelligence analyst and a key member of the SilenceBreakers team. Liam, this is Dr. Riley Davis, the whistleblower I told you about."
Liam stands, extending his hand. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Dr. Davis. Nate's told me a lot about your work."
I shake his hand, feeling a mix of anxiety and anticipation. "Please, call me Riley. I've heard you're quite the genius when it comes to unraveling complex data."
Liam's lips quirk in a small smile. "I do my best. And right now, my best is telling me that you two have no idea what you've stumbled into," he says, his voice low and urgent. "This corruption goes farther than you can possibly imagine."
I feel a chill across my skin. "What do you mean? How deep are we talking here?"
Liam pulls up a series of files on his computer, the screen casting an eerie glow on his face. "We're talking about a vast web of deceit and manipulation, stretching far beyond just Metropolitan General. This is a conspiracy that involves some of the most powerful players in the medical industry."
I can't believe what I'm hearing. Anger and disbelief swirl inside me, warring with a growing sense of determination. I glance over at Nate, and I can see the same emotions playing out on his face.
"Jesus Christ," he mutters, running a hand through his hair. "We knew it was bad, but this is a whole other level."
Liam nods grimly. "You two have opened a can of worms that's going to take a lot of work to sort out. But if anyone can do it, it's us."
I feel Nate's hand slip into mine, his fingers lacing with my own. It's a small gesture, but it means the world to me in that moment. We're in this together, no matter what.
"We're not backing down," I say, my voice fierce with conviction. "We're going to expose this corruption and make sure that justice is served, whatever it takes."
Liam gives us a tight smile. "I knew you two were the right ones for this job. But be careful—the people behind this conspiracy are powerful and dangerous. They have a massive incentive to keep their secrets buried."
I squeeze Nate's hand, feeling his strength flow into me. “They messed with the wrong hospital. We’re going to put an end to this."
Nate chuckles, his eyes glinting with a mixture of amusement and admiration. "Hell yes, Davis. Let's show these bastards what happens when they try to fuck with people's lives."
As we leave the headquarters, I feel a surge of boldness. My mind's still reeling from everything Liam just dropped on us. This conspiracy, the corruption—it's so much bigger than I ever imagined.
I turn to Nate, my heart pounding. "We're in deep shit now, aren't we?"
He lets out a low whistle. "Deeper than the Mariana Trench."
I can't help but laugh, despite the gravity of the situation. Leave it to Nate to crack a joke at a time like this.
"But hey," he says, his voice softening as he takes my hand. "We're in this together, right? You and me against the world."
I feel a rush of warmth spread through me at his touch, at the sincerity in his eyes. "They don't stand a chance against the dream team."
He grins, that crooked smile that never fails to make my heart skip a beat.
He pulls me into his arms, and I melt into his embrace, breathing in his familiar scent. For a moment, the rest of the world falls away—the conspiracy, the danger, the impossible odds we're facing. All that matters is the two of us, holding onto each other like a lifeline.
Later that night, we're holed up in Nate's penthouse, papers and files scattered across the coffee table. The sun's starting to set, casting a warm glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows. It would be romantic if we weren't knee-deep in a scandal.
Nate looks up from his laptop, his brow furrowed. "Every time I think we've hit the bottom of this cesspool, we find another layer of shit."
I lean back against the couch, feeling the weight of it all pressing down on me. "How the hell are we supposed to take on something this big? It's like trying to fight a hydra."
Nate sets his laptop aside, his eyes locking with mine. "Hey," he says softly, reaching out to take my hand. "We've got this, remember? You and me, partners in crime."
I can't help but smile at that, feeling a warmth spread through me. "More like partners in justice," I quip, squeezing his hand.
We sit there for a moment, just looking at each other, a charge running through the air between us. I can feel my pulse quickening, my skin tingling with anticipation.
"Fuck it," Nate murmurs, and then he's pulling me into his arms, his lips crashing against mine.
I melt into the kiss, my hands fisting in his hair. It's hot and desperate, a release of all the pent-up emotions we've been holding back. We cling to each other like lifelines, our bodies molding together like puzzle pieces.
When we finally break apart, we're both breathless, our faces flushed. Nate rests his forehead against mine, his eyes closed.
Later that night, I toss and turn in bed, unable to shake the nagging doubts creeping into my mind. Working with Nate, feeling this connection... it's all happening so fast. Am I letting my guard down too quickly? Can I really trust him with my heart along with this investigation?
The weight of our mission and my growing feelings for Nate threaten to overwhelm me. Maybe it's better to take a step back, to protect myself before I fall too deep. But even as these thoughts swirl in my mind, I can't deny the pull I feel towards him, the strength I draw from our partnership.
